Does anyone know what kind of jobs Owen grads get in tech? Amazon, for example, hired 12 Owen grads last year. When I looked on LinkedIn, it looked like several are in logistics in the greater Nashville area, not the standard leadership dev type position in Seattle that higher ranked schools send grads into.

Any R2 applicants get early admits? Although decision date is two weeks out, I can't help but think my chances are slim since most schools are admitting r2 apps early, and then waitlisting/dinging those who are left on the actual decision date.

Hey, did you get any official update to the portal? I got the admit call and scholarship info over the phone, but still no portal update. I was told it would be updated last week, but nothing yet.

Hey whitman,

In my graduating class (2016), there are at least three students heading to Seattle for jobs at Amazon. Two have accepted offers to be Senior Product Managers and one is going into the RLD Program. There are a bunch (8-10ish) from this year's class heading into Amazon's Pathways Operations program. They get to choose where they will work and have selected spots in Florida, Texas, California, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Washington among other places. Owen often places people into HR roles at Amazon but I do not know if any of my classmates this year will be doing that.

In regards to other jobs in tech, in the class of 2016 there are folks headed to:
-Google for a business development role on the East Coast (they interned in Mountain View and then chose to go full-time out East)
-Microsoft in Redmond for HR
-Microsoft on the East Coast for business development
-Genentech (BioTech & Pharma) for Marketing

Last summer, students from the class of 2016 interned at several major tech companies including:
-Intel (Finance)
-Tesla (Strategy)
-Uber (Marketing)
-Sony PlayStation Network (Marketing)

I am not sure who is returning. At least a couple of these people decided not to return full-time because they wanted to go into consulting.

Folks also interned at major tech/telecom companies including:
-AT&T (Finance & LDP)
-Verizon (Marketing)
-Sprint (Business Performance Management)

And several interned at Tech Startups/Healthcare tech companies such as:
-Move Loot (Strategy)
-MEDarchon (Clinical Knowledge Expert)
-Narus Health (IT Consultant)
-InvisionHeart (Internal Consulting)

People also interviewed with (and some turned down offers from):
-HP (HR & Marketing)
-Dell (Ops & Finance)
-Cisco (HR)
-Apple (IT Ops)

I hope this gives you a better idea. You could reach out directly to the Owen Tech Club if you want a better lay of the land.

teleste That is a very useful post!

Would you be able to comment on how your class placed in management consulting roles? Internships and FT. I'd love to ask you some questions if you have free time at some point as well. I am leaning towards Owen right now, but am waiting on a couple of programs before I make my final decision.

Hey PugLyfe,

Here's what I know about the consulting numbers (which isn't a ton and not very detailed).

Company and Number of Owen Interns Class of '16
Bain 1
Deloitte 3
PWC 1
Advisory Board 2
ECG 1
Kurt Salmon 1
Midtown Consulting 1
North Highland 2
Nordic Consulting 1

Full-time Offers to Owen Class of '16
Bain 1
Deloitte 6
PWC 3
EY 1
KPMG (at least) 2
North Highland 7
Capgemini (at least) 1
Kurt Salmon 1

Few thoughts
-***I am sure I am missing some numbers...I don't hang out with the Consulting Crowd very often :-D :-D :-D ***
-Generally 1/4 of Owen's class goes into consulting (though this may also include "internal consulting" roles)
-You can see the stats for previous years here: https://www.owen.vanderbilt.edu/employer ... report.cfm
-These numbers are not final so they may change a tiny bit by the end of the year
-These numbers are a mix of (1) S&O Consulting, (2) Human Capital Consulting, and (3) Healthcare Consulting...I don't know who is going to which group within these firms
-It is common for consulting firms to take far fewer interns than full-time hires (you can see Deloitte took twice as many Owen students for full-time as they did for internships)
-Owen is a core school of Deloitte's Atlanta office, so there is a consistent pipeline there every year
-As far as I know, these jobs are mostly in Atlanta, New York, and Nashville
-Last year, Owen placed two students at BCG, I don't believe any are going this year full-time (but I don't know for sure)

You can learn more about consulting at Owen here: https://blogs.owen.vanderbilt.edu/occ/

BTW, you have a great screen name. Have you met Owen's Pug?

teleste - thank you again for a very detailed response! Would you say that most people seeking FT consulting offers received them? I've gone over the employment reports before and they look fine. I just wonder how many had to settle for a plan b etc. I have not seen that pug, but its very cute! The world famous dougthepug resides in Nashville as well. Perhaps mine will meet both :P

Hoping I get a call soon. They had to cancel my interview on 2/9 and could only reschedule my interview to last Thursday. Anyone else there in a similar boat?

hey, recent grad here (i try to visit the page everyone once in a while). I went to Owen for consulting, interned in consulting, and joined FT. Without question, if you want to go into consulting, there will be a role for you. That being said, if you want to work for McKinsey (and many prospectives seem to think they do), Owen is not the place. We place strongly into everything outside of MBB, although we've sent at least 1 person to a MBB over the past 4 consecutive years (and possibly more). Culture-wise, the kind of student who chooses Owen isn't really pining for McK anyway.

Thanks for the input. It is much appreciated. I am not looking to work for MBB. A role with deloitte, pwc, kpmg etc would be just fine with me. From everything I have read about the culture and through my limited interactions with students, Owen seems like a great fit for me. I'm going to the admitted students weekend next month and look forward to it.

Thanks for chiming in. Can you expand on the bolded? Are there any more boutique consulting firms that do slightly different work, or with some social enterprise elements, or with better work-life balance, etc. that Owen places into?

I'd argue that boutique or mid-marketing consulting firms are more prevalent at Owen than large firms. Perennial recruiters include ECG, Kurt Salmon, North Highland (health care), Education Pioneers (education consulting), Arryve (tech), C3 (entertainment) and a few others I probably won't recall off the top of my head. I'm sure those don't ring a bell, but I think that's a bit of the point. More importantly, Owen really encourages students to look outside the career center for roles, and there's a ton of support you'll get if there's a firm that fits your needs.

Look, all of us had alternatives during the b-school application process, many of which were probably much larger programs. We chose Owen because we identify with the highly personal approach, collaborative approach, and lack of ego. I won't disparage another firm, but there are several that don't align as closely with the values we share at Owen.
