Dear experts,
I have some fundamental questions regarding GMAT preparation. Please chip in your views
So here we go :
1. Official Vs Non-official resources : At what stage should I start solving official (
OG) questions ? Towards the beginning of my preparation or towards the end ? Moreover, should I time my study sessions when I attempt questions from
OG ? i.e, should I use
OG questions for timed practice or for understanding and analyzing concepts ?
2. Timing : How should I time my study sessions ? I.e what is the ideal time per question for SC,CR,RC,DS,& PS ?
3. LSAT questions : Once I complete questions from
OG & Gprep, do you recommend that I solve questions from LSAT papers for improving my performance ?
4. RC : What should I read outside GMAT resources to improve my RC ? Moreover, how should I read it ? Rcs have been my Achilles heal for long , I guess this weakness is because I was never a veracious reader (Most non-natives are not , and definitely not me !)Do you suggest that I read excerpts of a passage and then read the whole passage to analyze it correctly ? Reading in real life is quite different from reading on the GMAT I guess ? So any special method you recommend that I use to read "non GMAT" content for improving RCs ?
5. Duration : Typically how many hours do you recommend for a complete and a thorough preparation ?
Thank you in advance and wish you all a happy new year
Please find your answers below:
1. You should start solving official resources form the very start and always time your practice. This will help you to get ready for the final day.
2. The timing depends from person to person and on your strengths too. Ideally for SC: 60 - 90 seconds, CR: 120 seconds, RC would depend on the length of the passage. For quants, a safe assumption would be 120 seconds per questions.
3. I would recommend you to stick to the questions related to the GMAT only. Once you have completed the official questions, you can start solving the questions from the preparatory course that you are following
4. Read the following post for RC:
how-to-solve-reading-comprehension-problems-212443.html#p16365505. Typically 2 - 3 hours on weekdays and 4 - 5 hours on weekends with mock CATs on weekends. You should study for 3 months to hit your full potential.
Happy new year to you too!!
