Hi there,

Thanks for sharing your background! My thoughts on your questions are below:

1) Start to formulate your post-MBA goals as you think about which top business schools to apply to. There should be a fit between your goals and what a school offers. Please see my blog on different ways to go about researching business schools: https://www.ivygroupe.com/single-post/2 ... ss-Schools. Once you have done your research, you will be in a better position to determine which schools are the best fit for you.

2) Continue to do well professionally; assume more responsibility if you can. Also, the biggest weakness I see from those in your demographic is a lack of extracurricular activities, which is why I think it's great that you founded SRIIYASH. Continue to build out that organization.

3) The biggest mistake I see in candidates is focusing too much on others and what they have done - focus on YOU and YOUR achievements. Since the admissions process is very competitive, I always encourage candidates to apply to a range of schools since we just don't know what the entire application pool will look like.

4) Merit scholarships are given out on the strength of a candidate's application, so the GMAT score by itself is not the only determining factor.

Our company offers a Pre-MBA Package to help strengthen a candidate's profile before he/she applies - information can be found here: https://www.ivygroupe.com/work-with-us. I hope this is helpful!

Best,
Shaifali

Dear Mr. Gupta,
Thank you so much for providing such an insight onto my future targets and areas to be focused upon. I still have a thing or two in my mind. Here they go:

1.) As I am aiming for a business school, it's necessary for me to gain an insight on the fundamentals of business, finance, accounting, statistics and management. So, to compensate for my low CGPA (I understand that can't be done fully, but it's still better to try instead of sitting idle :-D ) I am doing various specializations through MOOCs to strengthen my academic prowess. Till now I've done the following specializations:
a.) Financial Markets and Investment Strategy Specialization (INDIAN SCHOOL OF BUSINESS)
b.)Business Foundations Specialization (WHARTON)
c.)Foundations of Management Specialization (IESE BUSINESS SCHOOL)
d.)Investment and Portfolio Management Specialization (RICE)
I am currently enrolled in the following:
e.)Business Strategy Specialization (UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA)
f.)Financial Management Specialization (ILLINOIS)
g.)International Business Specialization (UNIVERSITY OF LONDON)

In addition to that, I've also done these courses already:
a.) Financial Markets by Nobel Laureate Robert Shiller (YALE)
b.)Game Theory (STANFORD)
c.)Gamification (WHARTON)
d.)Financial Engineering and Risk Management Part I and II (COLUMBIA)

Will they be able to compensate a bit for my not-so-good CGPA ?

2.)I am planning to prepare an Alternate Transcript for myself by taking up a few quant, finance and statistics courses. I have two methods to do that:
a.) Doing extension courses online from universities like UCLA, UCSD etc. (The Pre MBA courses) [easier for me]
b.) Doing courses from local colleges by actually attending them.
Which one should I prefer ?

3.) Is there any other thing that I can do ?

Looking forward to your expert opinion.

Warm Regards,
KAUSTUBH M. TREHAN

Dear expert, first of all, thank you for viewing my profile. This might be immensely helpful to me. As I am new to the process and have just given the GMAT for the very first time, you might have to go a bit further to clear my doubts precisely.

Thank you for all of the profile details and congrats on a fantastic GMAT score. It sounds like you are building a really good profile. I will break down my thoughts in a few areas and if you would like to discuss how we can work together through an early planning package, just get in touch. We help a lot of applicants a few years away from applying to build the right profile so they make sure to execute on all of those important areas.

Professional: JPM is a great pre-MBA company. Are you joining them full-time and in what capacity?

Academic: I do a lot of BITS Pilani folks and they do well, though a 7 is a bit low so it's good you aced the GMAT. Not much needed on the academic front.

Extra-Currics: Keep up the good work while focusing on one or two things that fit with your profile. This we can discuss further

The main reason people don't get in who have great stats is their story is not developed very well. Stats alone does not get someone in, especially when you come from a competitive demographic. That said, if we plan ahead we should reach success!

Best,
Scott

Your stats won't keep you out of school your story will. So focus on that area to differentiate yourself from others with similar profiles

Dude,
So your GMAT is impressive and you have a good job, but there's a lot more to your profile than that!

The first thing I think you should reliaze is that ONLY things that are relevant to B-school are relevant. And I think it will be helpful for you to re-conceptualize your profile,a nd think again about who you are and what you want.

What I mean for example, is that although you have solid numbers in your profile, the vast majority of the information you provided has nothing to do with an MBA.

so first of all:
What are your LEADERSHIP experiences?
What are your BUSINESS experiences?
What are your GOALS? Why do you want to do an MBA?

These are the min things you want to concentrate on, and you want to WORK towards your goals.
forget about high school. It no longer matters,
Forget about school projects. they don't matter either.

Instead focus on your GOALS and your STORY.

Best,
