Urban Planner: The installation of green roofs in urban areas can reduce the overall city temperature during summer months, thereby reducing the need for air conditioning and energy consumption. However, despite their benefits, the widespread adoption of green roofs has been slow. This is because the initial cost of installing green roofs is considerably high, and because __________.

Which of the following, if true, most logically completes the urban planner’s argument?

(A) there are sufficient numbers of skilled laborers available to install green roofs
(B) green roof materials are often sourced from suppliers who are located far from urban centers
(C) tax incentives for green construction projects are commonly available in urban areas
(D) traditional roofing solutions are generally less expensive and quicker to install than green roofs
(E) green roofs typically last longer than traditional roofing materials, thus potentially saving money over time

A, C and E can be easily eliminated, let's focus more on B and D.

(B) green roof materials are often sourced from suppliers who are located far from urban centres.
The way to eliminated B is to look at the penultimate sentence in the passage where it talks of 'widespread use' and not urban centres only.

(D) This is the correct answer
While continuing on the topic of cost of green roofs, it neatly explains why the adoption has been slow.

(A) there are sufficient numbers of skilled laborers available to install green roofs
> Benefit, Completely opposite; if sufficient numbers of skilled laborers avail, then it would lower the installation cost.
(B) green roof materials are often sourced from suppliers who are located far from urban centers
(C) tax incentives for green construction projects are commonly available in urban areas
> Benefit, If tax incentives for green construction projects are commonly available in urban areas, then it would lower the installation cost.
(D) traditional roofing solutions are generally less expensive and quicker to install than green roofs
Correct: "And, because (reason) " comparing "green roofing" with "traditional roofing" for less expensive and quicker to install, that's why adoption is slow.
(E) green roofs typically last longer than traditional roofing materials, thus potentially saving money over time
> Benefit, If it is so, then people would prefer to install this.

(A) There are sufficient numbers of skilled laborers available to install green roofs.

This statement does not address why the adoption has been slow. It actually suggests that labor availability is not a limiting factor.

(B) Green roof materials are often sourced from suppliers who are located far from urban centers.

While this could contribute to higher costs or logistical challenges, it does not directly explain why the adoption has been slow in a general sense.

(C) Tax incentives for green construction projects are commonly available in urban areas.

This statement implies a positive factor that should encourage adoption, which contradicts the point being made about slow adoption.

(D) Traditional roofing solutions are generally less expensive and quicker to install than green roofs.

This statement provides a direct reason why green roofs might not be adopted as quickly. It contrasts the high cost and longer installation time of green roofs with the less expensive and quicker installation of traditional roofs, reinforcing the idea of an additional barrier.

(E) Green roofs typically last longer than traditional roofing materials, thus potentially saving money over time.

This statement highlights a long-term benefit of green roofs, which would actually argue in favor of their adoption, contradicting the point about slow adoption.

the answer needs to explain why the adoption has been slow.

A. Isn´t a reason why it´s slow, the contrary would work
B. could be a reason but on its own it´s not enough, the distance doesn´t necessarily make it impossible for a faster adoption
C. This is a reason for the contrary
D. this explains why residents would prefer to install traditional roofing, making the adoption of green roofs slow.
E. this would explain a faster adoption

answer D

Which of the following, if true, most logically completes the urban planner’s argument?

(A) there are sufficient numbers of skilled laborers available to install green roofs => Against the urban planner's argument because of "sufficient numbers of skilled laborers"
(B) green roof materials are often sourced from suppliers who are located far from urban centers => Does NOT most logically support the urban planner's argument - only mentioning one part of being "slow"
(C) tax incentives for green construction projects are commonly available in urban areas => Against the urban planner's argument because of "tax incentives for green construction projects"
(D) traditional roofing solutions are generally less expensive and quicker to install than green roofs => CORRECT ANSWER, which most logically supports the urban planner's argument because traditional roofing solutions are both cheaper AND quicker to install than green roofs
(E) green roofs typically last longer than traditional roofing materials, thus potentially saving money over time => Against the urban planner's argument because of the financial benefit of green roofs

A) Incorrect . This answer goes against the direction the argument is taking since it provides reasons to install green roofs.

B) Incorrect . This answer could be the right but we don't know if the far location is really a problem. The traditional roofing solutions could also be located far from urban centers.

C) Incorrect . This one also goes against the direction of the argument since this is a reason to build more green roofs.

D) Correct . This answer goes in the continuity of the argument and completes it perfectly proposing that traditional roofing are less expensive than green ones and faster to install.

E) Incorrect. This answer also goes against the direction of the argument since it is an incentive to install more green roofs.

The last part of the sentence should be a reason behind the slow adoption adoption of green roofs

(A) Wrong. having skilled workers doesn't explain why green roofs aren't adopted quickly
(B) Wrong. having to import materials for green roofs from areas far from the urban centers, can impact the rate of adoption of green roofs. But it doesn't directly explain why as materials for other standard roofs may also be imported from far away.
(C) Wrong. availability of tax incentives doesn't explain why adoption is slow
(D) Right. if traditional roofing solutions are generally less expensive and quicker to install than green roofs then people most probably opt for the first rathen than the latter and therefore this explains the slow adoption
(E) Wrong. green roofs' durability can be used as an argument to adopt green roofs and can't explain the slow adoption.

Answer B made the most sense, because it explained another reason fow which it would be less likely that one install the green roofs. A, C and E actually would of been reasons to install them, therefore making them wrong answer choices. E would be tempting, but it didn't make sense to talk about price and then price again

The expected blank has to be another reason for the slow progress of the scheme.

(A) there are sufficient numbers of skilled laborers available to install green roofs Expecting -ve, But this is a +ve stmt
(B) green roof materials are often sourced from suppliers who are located far from urban centers Expecting -ve, But this is a nuteral stmt. No impact.
(C) tax incentives for green construction projects are commonly available in urban areas Expecting -ve, But this is a +ve stmt
(D) traditional roofing solutions are generally less expensive and quicker to install than green roofs Yeah, This is -ve stmt, Hence could be the choice.
(E) green roofs typically last longer than traditional roofing materials, thus potentially saving money over time Expecting -ve, But this is a +ve stmt

Prethinking: we are looking for reasoning which explains: "despite their benefits, the widespread adoption of green roofs has been slow"
So it has to be something which would lead to people not installing greenroofs

Which of the following, if true, most logically completes the urban planner’s argument?

(A) there are sufficient numbers of skilled laborers available to install green roofs (doesn't lead to less adoption instead leads to more adoption)
(B) green roof materials are often sourced from suppliers who are located far from urban centers (doesn't strengthen or weaken the position)
(C) tax incentives for green construction projects are commonly available in urban areas (leads to more adoption instead of less adoption)
(D) traditional roofing solutions are generally less expensive and quicker to install than green roofs (If traditional roofing is less expensive then user will prefer that over green roof, keep this)
(E) green roofs typically last longer than traditional roofing materials, thus potentially saving money over time (leads to more adoption instead of less adoption)

Hence the best choice is D

(A) Skilled laborers are available: This wouldn't hinder adoption; it might even encourage it. It weakens the argument.

(B) Materials sourced from far away: Transportation costs could be a factor, but it's not the most significant barrier since the cost of materials is likely a smaller portion of the overall cost compared to initial installation. It weakens the argument.

(C) Tax incentives exist: This would incentivize green roofs, making them more attractive. It weakens the argument.

(D) Traditional roofs are cheaper and faster: This directly addresses the slow adoption. The higher cost and longer installation time of green roofs compared to traditional options are significant barriers. This strengthens the argument.

(E) Green roofs last longer: While true, the initial high cost is a bigger hurdle than potential long-term savings. It weakens the argument.

To answer this, we need to find an option which provides another reasoning than cost of installing green roofs to explain despite benefits, the adoption of green roofs has been slow.

Let's deep dive into the options now,

A. This option supports to install green roofs. Eliminated.
B. Farther location of supplies adds to the initial cost of installation, which has already been discussed. Eliminated.
C. Again supports to install green roofs. Eliminated.
D. Now, this option compares the two types of roofs and also adds up another factor of 'quick installation'. Hence, the answer.
E. Again supports to install green roofs. Eliminated.

Therefore, the answer is option D.

(E) green roofs typically last longer than traditional roofing materials, thus potentially saving money over time

Here, we need to complete the argument. Let's find out the conclusion first.
Conclusion - However, despite their benefits, the widespread adoption of green roofs has been slow.

We need to provide a sentence which logically completes the urban planner's argument. For that we need to provide a premise which might strengthen the conclusion that although the green roofs are beneficial their adoption has been slow because _____

Prethinking - The answer could be related to things like: excessive government control/resource crunch/it requiring specialised labour which is not available etc

(A) there are sufficient numbers of skilled laborers available to install green roofs
in that case green roofs should have been more widely adopted. Reject.

(B) green roof materials are often sourced from suppliers who are located far from urban centers
This is in line with the prethinking. It explains that if the materials are coming from far off the adoption has been slow.

(C) tax incentives for green construction projects are commonly available in urban areas
In that case, more wide adoption should be seen.

(D) traditional roofing solutions are generally less expensive and quicker to install than green roofs
Tricky. This fact is good to know but it does not explain why the adoption for green roofs has been slow

(E) green roofs typically last longer than traditional roofing materials, thus potentially saving money over time
in that case, it should have been more widely adopted.

Here, the urban planner has mentioned that green roof can reduce overall city temperature, and save costs. But, there are hindrances. One of them is mentioned as installation of green roofs. So, the correct choice will be the one that will give one additional and reasonable explanation behind slow adoption of green roofs:

(A) there are sufficient numbers of skilled laborers available to install green roofs
A - it supports the idea of faster adoption of green roof
(B) green roof materials are often sourced from suppliers who are located far from urban centers
B - might be a reason, but it does not conclusively show why green roof adoption is slow, since green roof materials can be procured in bulk
(C) tax incentives for green construction projects are commonly available in urban areas
C - it supports the idea of faster adoption of green roof
(D) traditional roofing solutions are generally less expensive and quicker to install than green roofs
D - this is the answer, as it directly links the upfront cost of installation of a green roof to a traditional roof
(E) green roofs typically last longer than traditional roofing materials, thus potentially saving money over time
E - it supports the idea of faster adoption of green roof

(A) there are sufficient numbers of skilled laborers available to install green roofs--it discusses labor availability but does not directly address the cost barrier associated with green roofs.

(B) green roof materials are often sourced from suppliers who are located far from urban center--it addresses potential logistical challenges in sourcing materials, but it does not directly relate to the high initial cost barrier.

(C) tax incentives for green construction projects are commonly available in urban areas--Tax incentives could potentially offset the high initial cost of installing green roofs, thereby addressing one of the reasons for slow adoption. This option provides a plausible reason that complements the argument about cost.

(D) traditional roofing solutions are generally less expensive and quicker to install than green roofs--it directly contrasts traditional roofing solutions with green roofs, highlighting one of the reasons for the slow adoption—cost and time efficiency.

(E) green roofs typically last longer than traditional roofing materials, thus potentially saving money over time--it provides a long-term cost benefit of green roofs but does not directly address the immediate high initial cost barrier.

So D is the answer

To complete the argument, we have to find another reason for slow adoption.

(A) there are sufficient numbers of skilled laborers available to install green roofs
This is opposite. It helps with adoption. Incorrect.

(B) green roof materials are often sourced from suppliers who are located far from urban centers
Not relevant, already talks about cost and although this can affect cost.

(C) tax incentives for green construction projects are commonly available in urban areas
This is opposite. It helps with adoption. Incorrect.

(D) traditional roofing solutions are generally less expensive and quicker to install than green roofs
This is providing a another reason with an alternative cheaper and quicker option. Correct.

(E) green roofs typically last longer than traditional roofing materials, thus potentially saving money over time
This is opposite. It helps with adoption. Incorrect.
