GMAT score of 680 (Q47, V35, IR8) - is it worth applying?

I just received my GMAT score and unfortunately it is much lower than I was anticipating... I received a score of 680 (Q47, V35, IR8) but I have been consistently scoring above 720 on my recent practice exams (last two practice exams were 760) and have never scored below a 39 in Verbal so I'm not quite sure what happened on test day. Unfortunately, my city is in lockdown so all of the test centers are closed and I do not have the option to write online again.

I am planning on applying to the top 10 programs in the U.S. - is it still worth to apply or should I wait until I can retake the GMAT?

Hi.... sorry about that.... The average in the top 10 is about 720... you are 40 points below that... not impossible but you need to clearly show WHY. I would recommend digging through the decision tracker using filters - here is a topic how to do it in case you need some help.

1.  Decision tracker filters  - filter by admitted only and then try your country. There is no gender but you can usually tell that the more competitive engineer male demographics is more competitive (circular argument?... huh) and then some of the folks with a less similar background can get away with lower scores.

Also, try the WAMC tool - it is a decent way to try things out.

These two tools are based on the historical data and though probably not 100% accurate, they do have 80% covered pretty well.

Alternatively you can consider Ross, Darden, and Sloan that have provided waivers in certain cases for the test scores since your score is somewhat below average....

680 is not a bad score, but it is challenging to enroll in a top 10! you can consult with admission consultant with all of your documents.

Hi imanmo,

First off, a 680/Q47 is a strong Score, so it could be enough to get you into your first-choice School. If you know the specific Schools that you plan to apply to, you would likely find it beneficial to speak with an Admissions Expert about your overall profile and plans. Those Experts should be able to answer your Admissions questions and help define the specific areas of your profile that could use some improvement. There's a Forum full of those Experts here:

When these types of score drops occur, the two likely "causes" involve either something that was unrealistic during practice or something that was surprising (or not accounted for) on Test Day. Before we discuss any of those potential issues though, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on how you've been studying and your goals:

Studies:
1) How many times have you taken the Official GMAT and how did you score on each attempt (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores for each)?
2) How long have you studied in total? How many hours do you typically study each week?
3) What study materials have you used so far?
4) On what dates (or approximate dates) did you take EACH of your CATs/mocks and how did you score on EACH (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores for EACH)?

Goals:
5) What is your overall goal score?
6) What specific application deadlines are you facing?
