After five years of development, testing has commenced on the world’s most powerful supercomputer that could eventually complete one quintillion operations per second and help geneticists process the vast amount of data needed to map the human genome.

(A) supercomputer that could eventually complete one quintillion operations per second and help
(B) supercomputer that could eventually have the capability of completing one quintillion operations per second and to help
(C) supercomputer, eventually able to complete one quintillion operations per second, and helping
(D) supercomputer, and it eventually could complete one quintillion operations per second and helping
(E) supercomputer, and it could eventually have the capability to complete one quintillion operations per second and help

The topic I consider is that:
1. Parallelism Error.
The word before "and" should parallel to the word after "and"
2. Redundant.
"could" and "the capability" are the same meaning.

Quote:
(A) supercomputer that could eventually complete one quintillion operations per second and help
No mistake. Keep it.

Quote:
(B) supercomputer that could eventually have the capability of completing one quintillion operations per second and to help
Mistake #1. Out.

Quote:
(C) supercomputer, eventually able to complete one quintillion operations per second, and helping
Mistake #1. Out.

Quote:
(D) supercomputer, and it eventually could complete one quintillion operations per second and helping
Mistake #1. Out.

Quote:
(E) supercomputer, and it could eventually have the capability to complete one quintillion operations per second and help
Mistake #2. Out.

I choose A.

(A) supercomputer that could eventually complete one quintillion operations per second and help – CORRECT

Both features of supercomputer – “to complete one quintillion operations per second” and “to help” are expressed clearly and are parallel

(B) supercomputer that could eventually have the capability of completing one quintillion operations per second and to help INCORRECT

Parallelism error – “to help” is not parallel to “eventually have the capability..” in the list beginning with “that could” as common term
Quality error – “have the capability to complete” is unnecessarily wordy. Same idea can be expressed succinctly by saying “it could eventually complete”

(C) supercomputer, eventually able to complete one quintillion operations per second, and helping INCORRECT

Construction error – comma + and is used to connect two independent clause. Here “comma + helping” is not an IC but a verb-ing modifier

(D) supercomputer, and it eventually could complete one quintillion operations per second and helpingINCORRECT

Parallelism error – “helping” is not parallel to “complete.” in the list beginning with “it eventually could” as common term

(E) supercomputer, and it could eventually have the capability to complete one quintillion operations per second and help – INCORRECT

Quality error – “have the capability to complete” is unnecessarily wordy. Same idea can be expressed succinctly by saying “it could eventually complete”

Experts Global Explanation:

Parallelism + Pronoun

Please remember that any elements linked by a conjunction must be parallel.

A. This answer choice maintains appropriate pronoun use and parallelism throughout the sentence; the pronoun “that” correctly refers to the noun “supercomputer”, and the verb phrases “complete one quintillion…” and “help geneticists…” are parallel. Please remember that any elements linked by a conjunction must be parallel.

B. This answer choice fails to maintain parallelism between the verb phrases “of completing one quintillion…” and “to help geneticists…”. Additionally, Option B is awkward and needlessly wordy due to the phrase “have the capability of completing”. Please remember that any elements linked by a conjunction must be parallel.

C. This answer choice fails to maintain parallelism between the verb phrases “to complete one quintillion …” and “helping geneticists…”. Please remember that any elements linked by a conjunction must be parallel.

D. This answer choice fails to maintain parallelism between the verb phrases “could complete one quintillion …” and “helping geneticists…”. Furthermore, Option D suffers from pronoun ambiguity; it is unclear whether the pronoun “it” refers to the noun “testing” or the noun “supercomputer”. Please remember that any elements linked by a conjunction must be parallel.

E. This answer choice repeats the pronoun error seen in Option D, lacking a clear antecedent for the pronoun “it”. Further, Option E is awkward and needlessly wordy due to the phrase “have the capability to complete”. Please remember that any elements linked by a conjunction must be parallel.

A is the best answer choice.
