What was your mean mock score ? was it same as 460 ? Have you given GMAT exam with 100% focus ? was there any external issue ?

Thanks for your response.

I did not do any mock test. Maybe that was the reason as I did not have any "real exam experience" and taking practice questions was probably not sufficient.

Hi JulianJ,

I'm sorry to hear that your Official GMAT did not turn out better. From what you describe, if you did not take any practice CATs/mocks during your studies, then you had no way of knowing what your actual 'ability level' was - but now we know. Thankfully, Business Schools generally do not care if you take the GMAT more than once, but with just this one Score result to use as reference, it's tough to say how long it might take you to get to the point that you can consistently score 600. Statistically-speaking though, it would likely require that you commit to another 2 months (or more) of consistent, guided study - and you would have to make signficant improvements to how you handle BOTH the Quant and Verbal sections.

Before I can offer you any additional advice for your studies, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on how you've been studying and your goals:

Studies:
1) What type of study routine were you following? How many weeks did you study and how many hours did you typically study each week?
2) Did you use any other study materials besides the course that you mentioned?

Goals:
3) Is your overall goal score 600 or something else?
4) When are you planning to apply to Business School and what Schools are you planning to apply to?

GMAT assassins aren't born, they're made,
Rich

Hi JulianJ,

I think improving 140 points in just 20 days is a tall order. Can you push your GMAT to a later date?

Here's an idiom list for Sentence Correction. Consider checking out the gmatclub study plan post. It mentions a variety of resources you may want to check out. A good sign a person will hit their target score is two consecutive fresh Official Mocks that do same.

JulianJ I am sorry to hear that you did not do well. I understand that it is disheartening when one does not perform as expected. Nevertheless, I am glad that you are willing to give another try. One of the first things that we need to do is create an improvement plan for you, which starts with deciding on a target Quant and Verbal score.

There are 20+ ways to score 600. For example, you can score ~600 with a Q45, V30 or with a Q40, V35. The optimum way depends on where you currently are and what kind of effort you are willing to put in. Either way, you will need to improve your Quant score.

Your e-GMAT account stats

I have a few questions about your preparation. This would help us estimate your current ability at a subsection level, which in turn would enable us to determine an optimal path.

1. What were your accuracies in SC, CR, RC in Scholaranium?
2. Did you graduate from Medium Cementing in any subsection?
3. Did you write to the Strategy team asking for help? What did they say?
4. Every learning activity in the e-GMAT platform is graded. What were your median concept and practice quiz scores?

You can also share your e-GMAT ID on a PM and I can get the data myself.

Your commitment for the next few days
What kind of effort are you willing to put in during the next few days (# of hours)? Once we know this, we can plan your improvement.

I took GMAT 21st December and scored 640.

So improving 180 points in 20 days is definitely possible :)

Thank you all for your help!

Wow. That is a pretty amazing result. What did you end up doing?

Do you feel your other exam went terribly? I mean I spent 3 months improving 210 points and here you are going up 180 points in 20 days 😱

Thank you for your kind words :)

Ironically, I felt much better after my first attempt until I saw my unofficial score. After the second attempt, I felt I did not do well and was shocked again. Luckily this time in a positive way :)

I think I made a mistake that I did not take any mock before 1st attempt and did not take the practice quizes under timing pressure. Although having good accuracy, apparently the timing aspect was crucial.

Therefore, in those 21 days, I just focused on doing quizzes under time pressure (and did one mock 9 days before the exam scoring 580) and it worked apparently.
