If ★ denotes either an addition, subtraction or multiplication, or division. What is the value of 3★4?
1) 2★2=4
2) (4★2)-(2★2)=2
Statement 1:We plug in the operations and check which ones are viable, for example \(2+2=4\) and \(2*2=4\) make sense but \(2-2=4\) doesn't. So ★ can be either addition or multiplication. Yet \(3+4\) and \(3*4\) give different values so insufficient.
Statement 2:Addition: \(6 - 4 = 2\), accept.
Multiplication: \(8-4=2\), reject.
Subtraction: \(2 - 0 = 2\), accept.
Division: \(2 - 1 = 2\), reject.
So from statement 2 ★ can be an addition for multiplication, resulting in different values for 3★4. Insufficient.
Combined:The only operation is in both statements is addition, sufficient.
