S(1): Gives r<1/3 ==> r<0.33 approx. Hence it can be 1 or 2. Thus N.S

S(2): Gives r<1/10 ==> r<0.10. Hence the only option possible for t is 0 as every other digit (0.15, 0.25 etc) will be more than 0.10. Hence Suff.

Thus answer B.

If r is represented by the decimal 0.t5, what is the digit ?

(1) r<1/3
(2) r<1/10

Kudos for a correct solution.

St-1 implies r < 0.333 so t can have values 0,1,2. Not sufficient
St-2 implies r < 0.10 so t can be only '0' i.e., r = 0.05 Sufficient

1) r<1/3; so r could be .05,.15,.25 - not sufficient

If r is represented by the decimal 0.t5, what is the digit t?

(1) r<1/3
(2) r<1/10

To answer this question I determined the options for t that could be 0, 1, 2,..9. Then I analyzed each statement separately. For example, 1st statements tells us that r<1/3 or 0.333, so t could be 0, 1, or 2, such as 0.05, 0.15, 0.25 so that r must be less than 1/3 or 0.333. It is clear that there is no single choice for t that can satisfies the question. 1 st Statement is insufficient.
Looking at the 2nd statement, r<1/10 or 0.1, in this case t could equal to only 0, that is 0.05, in order for r to be less than 0.1. So, This statement is sufficient.

To conclude, correct answer is B.

I tend to skim over questions hurriedly and get them wrong. in my initial assessment, the statement r = 0.t5 did not register as a positive value at all. the statement clearly shows r is a positive decimal.

(1) when r < 1/3, r < 0.333... then the value can be 0.05 or 0.15. not sufficient.
(2) when r < 1/10...then the value can only be 0.05 in which case t= 0. sufficient.

Answer is B.

this is a reminder for me to read effectively and also to process my error log better. Please do let me know if I made a mistake in my explanation.

Here the equation is :
r = 0.t5

1. r<1/3 which means 0.33
so , the possible values of r can be 0.25,0.15,0.05. So it is insufficient

2. r<1/10 = 0.1
r<0.1
only 0.05 is possible here. So it is Sufficient
