The following sentence: "Historically, the Lenape inhabited lands that are now parts of New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and New York, and they settled, along the rivers and bays" does contain a comma and coordinating conjunction between the two independent clauses: "Historically, the Lenape...and New York" and "they settled,along the rivers and bays", but does not that comma change the meaning on the sentence by making "and they settled" an additional part of the sentence and implying that "...and New York along the rivers and bays" is the actual meaning of the sentence?

'that....' modifier use is correct in the sentence. Meaning is evident through this usage.
