I intend to apply in R2 for the MBA class of 2019 (2018 intake). Would appreciate an evaluation of my profile.

WE : Will complete 5 years 8 months by the time I start school (April 2018)

Gender: Male
Nationality: Indian
GMAT: 730 (Q50, V39, IR 6)

International exposure: Have never had the opportunity to work abroad, but have worked in cross functional teams throughout.

Education: Post Graduate Diplioma in Banking (CGPA 8/10)
Bachelor of Technology: (CGPA 6.1/10)

Professional Experience:
> 3 years at ICICI Bank (India's leading Private sector bank) as a Corporate Credit Risk Analyst. Here I was involved in various processes over the 3 years. (Risk monitoring, Governance, QA, Regulatory, Reporting to Senior Management etc)
> 2 years at Barclays India. Areas of work include Compliance, Risk Assessment, and Project Management

Both the roles above involved liaising with cross functional teams in London, Singapore, Canada, U.S., Bahrain etc.

Extra- Curricular:
Have been involved in CSR(Corporate social responsibility) activities. Active participant in educating underpriviliged kids (among other activities) at various company-empanelled NGOs. Have also been involved in local social work organised within the residential community.

Active participant in sports throughout my school years. University captain of the football team along with being chief sports coordinator.

My biggest fear is that my overall academic record is rather weak and I would like to know what I could do to overshadow this. Is the steady improvement after graduation enough? Does the 730 in GMAT help? I have also recently completed an Executive Education course from Judge Business School, Cambridge - sponsored by my company.

Would love to hear some views. Thanks in advance.

Well, a 6.1 is a weak CGPA. The challenge this year is they have no optional essay to explain weak points in the resume (and they removed the essay because applicants make too many excuses :-D )

You can't change your GPA now, so you will have to work around it. My suggestion is to do the following:
1. present a strong resume (most ISB applicants don't do that). Show your impact in numbers.
2. Show analytical skills and high intellect. Ask your recommender to mention these with solid examples
3. show achievements and career progress through the other two essays. Needless to say, career goals have to be clear.

Beyond that, the high GMAT will help to establish your intellectual capability.

Hello there,

You are clearly passionate about automobiles and that's a good start!
In terms of profile building, continue doing the good work you are currently doing. Promotions and work related achievements definitely help, so work towards those.

My other two suggestions will help you should your plans change by next year and you start thinking of applying to international b-schools :
1. Gain some international work experience. I guess it would not be so difficult at Hyundai.
2. get involved outside work. Social service is a good way to do this, however, gain some depth in experience. Don't go after too many activities, but do one well.

Please provide Profile Evaluation- ISB (for 2019-2020 Batch) - I know its early, but have to plan

I presently work in a Public Sector Bank as Senior Manager
Total Work Experience - 08 years (in Bank) and 04 Months (in IT - Cognizant as Programmer Analyst Trainee)

In Bank, Joined in December 2009 as Assistant Manager and then got first Promotion to Manager in September 2013, second promotion to Senior Manager in July 2017.

As Assistant Manager I have worked in Credit Dept. handled loans of all kinds Retail, MSME etc.
As Manager, I headed 03 Branches - 01 Urban,01 Rural and one Metro Branch as Branch Manager.
Presently, as Senior Manager I am now posted in a Metro Branch as Second Line Manager presently assisting Assistant General Manager in all the dept (operations, advances, deposits).

I have worked in 07 different cities and four different states in almost all parts of country during this tenure.

What should be a good score in GMAT and whether Public Sector Banks profile stand chance as I do not have corporate background...

Why MBA? - I have been working in credit department for a long time and have processed many kinds of loans - In public sector, we are more like generalists...and not particularly specialist in a single type of work and though I worked in credit department but we can easily handle day to day branch operations/deposits/locker/clearing/customer complaints/NPA recovery/Suit Filing at DRT/Civil Suits and any other miscellaneous dept. as and when need arise. MBA will help me to make a career shift and I can use this immense work experience to add to my knowledge.

I have not seen any of my colleagues who wants to pursue MBA full time because a Public Sector Bank provides excellent Job Security and their long term plan is to continue with the present Bank. Though I think differently, Bank has provided me with immense exposure to almost so many industries (MSME, Mid corporate, Large corporate), government machinery (functioning), Police, Courts, etc and I want to use this knowledge for better understanding of businesses through Formal Education.

Target School - ISB, IIMA.

Please provide your suggestions and comments.

Nitin,

I like the fact that you are thinking beyond job security to do something you like! With everything else being good in your profile, GMAT is the only missing link now. I am wondering why you are not planning to apply this year (for 2018 cycle). You already have substantial work experience, in fact on the higher side of the ISB class. Another extra year will only make the adcom wonder why you waited this long (unless you are doing something significant in the coming year).

I'd say, give a push to your GMAT prep and go for the kill now.

How likely am I to get through ISB? Is there any other college I should look at? My only constraint is I cannot wait for another year.

Thank you

Hi GAurav,

I assume you are also applying to ISB, thats why you have shared your profile here. Hence I am responding to your post both for ISB and INSEAD.

First ISB: At this moment, I don't see any constraints. Go ahead and apply. Your GMAT could be better. If you can take it in the next one month, with an aim to score 730+, then go ahead and take it.

Your experience, with a mix of operations and consulting is good. What do you wish to do after the MBA? You should be explaining what you currently lack and how MBA will help you fill that gap.

Regarding INSEAD, you don't have the kind of international experience they seek in applicants. I'd say, you gain some more work exp, probably work with some international clients and then apply to INSEAD. A better GMAT score will help here as well.

Hi pj2101,

Thanks for sharing your profile.

I am an ISB alum and run an admission consulting firm, CrackAdmission (www.crackadmission.com). Below is my take on your profile :
- GMAT Score : Average

- Experience :
Quantity : 3 years - Average
Quality : Social Sector – seems promising and interesting. I will be able to comment more only when you describe what you have actually done in these 3 years in terms of taking initiatives, leadership experiences etc.

- Extracurricular : Although international accolades in 2 Research projects seem impressive, I will need further details from you in terms of any other extra curricular interests you have pursued.

- Undergrad :
Institution : IIT KGP – Better than average
CGPA : 6.9 – On the lower side

Overall, you seem to have a good profile, and with a well articulated application stand to have a good shot at ISB. However, it is very important that you demonstrate clarity in your goals (do you want to stay with the social sector or move onto something else, do you want to keep working as a consultant or do you want to move into internal strategy …….) and state explicitly the motivation behind doing an MBA at the current juncture of your career, and how ISB fits into the scheme of things.
Please feel free to reach out to me at +919701215544/ arijit.biswas@crackadmission.com in case you want to discuss further.

Wish you the very best !
Cheers

Hi,

I am a little concerned with a low GPA and an average GMAT score. The rest of your application will need to be very strong to fetch yourself an interview.

Hi Ishwar,

Getting into ISB is very subjective. This is one institute which puts importance on each aspect of your profile. Everything such as GMAT score, essays, interview, education, work ex is treated and scored separately. This ensures that if you score low on one point, you can balance it on another point.

My case - I had a low GMAT score but had close to 8 years work ex and they really liked my essays and interview. Hope you get the point.

This means that with the low years of work experience and employment gap you have, you need to score higher on other points such as GMAT score (700+), essays and interview. Be prepared to explain a lot what you have been doing during the employment gap. You will have to justify it very strongly.

Hope it helped.

Hi aadikamagic,

I worked at various locations like Kolkata, Noida and Mumbai in that span.
I wasn't really comfortable with the team that I was working with.
I resigned the job on my own accord.

I have nothing much to say about the employment gap as I took it for personal reasons.
Can you suggest a prep plan for GMAT starting from now?
The MUST have material, mock test sources, etc.,

Thanks for replying. Can you share your ISB and IIM-C success story, here?

It doesn't work that way. You will obviously be giving your best for the GMAT right? I mean you will be studying to get a score as high as possible. Hence the question of what an ideal score you should target is redundant.
Focus on getting the highest score you can, and then get your profile evaluated.

Additionally, GMAT score only takes care of the Academic section of ISB, you still have 2 other sections to shine in :)

Yeah, that was obvious. I sounded like Alan
But the thing is there are road blocks bothering me on my profile that would hinder my chances of an ISB admit :(

If you have an employment gap of three straight years, then that would be the biggest concern for the adcom. I didnt quite get the picture straight, so do explain further.

Abhishank, there is an obsession among applicants to find out what GMAT score to target. I totally agree with you that applicants should aim for their best scores. At the same time, they should be cognizant of ISB's class average GMAT and try to score above that.

Well, my story is that I had good number of years of experience and i took a lot of time in writing my essays and preparing for interviews. I did not take any external help though. I think if you can justify in your essays why you need an MBA and how you will contribute to the school and plus, you are clear about your future, the chances of getting selected increase.

For preperation, i bought few books and got free tests along with them. Best way to prepare for GMAT is to give tests and review them and work on weak areas. Again, I could never get me head around the english part hence my score was not very good.

good Luck!!

As of now, I'm aiming for a high score in GMAT alone
that is scheduled in May,2018

My profile has its own drawbacks.
The major one being my employment gap and the second one --- my undergrad CGPA.

Now to cover these up to a certain extent,
do you think the essay alone is going to play a major role?

I would like an expert's insight into this.
