Dear Arjun1001,

First of all, you should get rid of thoughts in your head such as “stuck in current profile/stagnation etc.”. While in reality, you might actually be going through these emotions, if you are half serious of securing an admit from a top Business school, you need to demonstrate that the MBA is a natural career progression, and you will leverage both your past experiences and the learnings from MBA to achieve certain career goals.

Below is my evaluation of your profile.

GMAT: Anything above 700 will be a competitive score for your target B schools. Btw, when do you plan to give the GMAT and apply to schools? While the final deadlines of all the IIM Exec programs are over for this year’s admission, ISB’s R3 is around the corner.

Academics: Average; Low CGPA in college needs to be countered by a good GMAT score.

Work Experience: The banking sector in India is going through a major transformation and public banks have to work closely with startups, private players and other ecosystem enablers to create a positive impact on the millions of Indians they serve. In such a scenario, you can position yourself aptly in front of recruiters after business school and also the admission committee as to how your on ground experience of credit management across different asset classes puts you in an advantageous position when it comes to designing innovative financial products for a significant section of Indians as part of a private firm post MBA.

Extracurriculars: Good mix of ECs give a positive impression of your personality. However, you will have to narrow down to 1 or 2 to showcase passion.

Overall, with a GMAT score of more than 700 and a well-articulated application where you can demonstrate how you can add value to the school’s cohort and how you will build on your current experiences during your MBA to upskill yourself for short and long-term career goals, you stand a good chance of making the cut.

I am an ISB alum,CO15, and have been guiding applicants successfully to get into global Business schools for the last 6+ years. Feel free to get in touch if you seek professional guidance and mentorship.
Wish you all the very best!

Hi Aman2100

With 700+ expected GMAT score and good non-engineering academic percentages with quality extracurriculars, you stand a very good chance of getting an interview call only if you present your rich work experience through the essay and the application well.

The essay being one of the most crucial aspects of the application form should tell the story about the professional journey. Your essays should reflect your passion towards your career, and also what value you are bringing to the cohort. Make sure you select an evaluator who you are confident will give promising feedback about you.

Wishing you all the best.

Hello Aman2100

Most elements check the box- Work ex (brands on the CV are strong, experience shows good potential for story telling) Past scores (decent), GMAT (at least the target score in your case), Extracurricular (adds diversity, can be made into relevant stories for the application).
One piece that is missing is career goals- what does someone with your profile want to achieve post MBA and how clear and realistic is that vision will be a key decision maker in the admission process.

You may want to read here on what factors work in a profile and here to add to your research on career goals.

Hello Arjun

ISB or IIM A/B are going to evaluate you on primarily 4 factors- Academic Potential, Work Ex, Diversity, and Career Goals. Most of the aspects check the box.
Academic potential (with the target GMAT score) looks decent. All the best to exceed your target score.
Work ex wise, the govt experience will help stand out and the certification will definitely help. However, do not look at work ex like a checklist- "if I have 'XYZ' will I get in". Unlike academics (which is easier to measure- a 730 on the GMAT is any day better than a 700 for example), work ex is not as straightforward. What matters is the depth of your work ex- what have you done in those years, the career progression, the achievements and most importantly how you present the same in the application (via essays, LOR and interviews). Two candidates with the same experience can have very different ways of portraying their candidature and that can make a significant difference. So to your question, whether certifications will help- yes, as a checklist the more the better, but how you build a narrative around them and how you choose to make them relevant towards your past experience, future goals and the overall application will decide how strong these should be considered.
Diversity- the govt work ex adds some diversity for sure, so do some of the extracurricular (some of these seem dated- keep in mind most school/university activities do not add much weight unless the achievements were stellar or are still relevant today). Just like work ex, impact, accomplishments and presentation will decide whether these will help you get in. For example- you have won man of the match in District League tournaments organised by bank unions- great achievement but why is it important to mention to a B School- how is it relevant to the application, how will it be told as a part of one single cohesive narrative will answer whether it is a strength or not.
Career Goals- lastly, the most important piece of the admissions puzzle are the career goals- these need to be clear (ISB/IIMs are looking for leaders with clarity of vision of their career and every step is calculated- that's how the MBA also fits in) and realistic (you hcan have clear and fancy goals, but if they are not possible either with your skills or the school isn't a good fit, the goals aren't realistic and you will be seen lacking research and hence not a good fit). Unfortunately, there is no mention of goals. Keep in mind that your future aspirations are as much a part of your profile as is your past experience (most people tend to miss this) as the MBA is primarily a tool or a weapon to help you become that future self.

To summarize, look at the application not as a checklist (I have N years of work ex, have played XYZ sports, have ABC certifications) but as a story (All that I have done at work or in extracurricular has been towards fulfilling a vision of my life which is...) and ask yourself how will these pieces now fit together. If you have a great story, with these stats, you stand a good chance of an interview invite.

You may want to read here on what factors work in a profile and here to add to your research on career goals.

Hello,

1. A GMAT score of 680 should not be a blocker. Of course, if you have a higher score , it will surely add value.
2. Your career break and shifts need to be taken into account for your goals focus, career story and finally the application, so focus on streamlining your communication on that.
3. Extracurriculars are well placed.

All the best!

Hi,
For the profile evaluation here, I am not focussing on the GMAT yet, since you still have to appear for the test. Your extracurriculars and hobbies will definitely help you showcase a focused and a passionate leadership profile.

Here is my take about how you can identify the certifications which can increase your chances for the admit:

When you compile your work experience, you should focus on earmarking the transferable skills which correspond to the post MBA function and industry you are targeting. You can also focus on gaining contemporary skills according to your goals, have very relevant deep industry perspective so that you can communicate the fit.

For example - if you plan to use your "experience with dealing with people from different sections of society and handling credit across different sectors" in the fintech space - you could go some levels deeper in the industry segment, answering a few questions like how deep is your insight on p2p lending, alternative credit scoring, alternative insurance underwriting, digital wallets etc. Such exploration will help you identify the gaps you need to prepare for more appropriately and identify if you really require any certifications or just more knowledge and introspection.

It will help you put across a stronger story.

All the best!

Hi @Thoneretruns/Allen

You have a very good profile, diverse/quality academic background and rich work experience with a hobby of writing blogs on poems and short stories make you an ideal candidate for the PGP program at the ISB.

You have a clear short-term goal which is very much achievable and in line with your current work experience. The essays being one of the most crucial aspects of the application form, highlighting your professional/personal journey and the short term goal will surely get you an interview chance.

We wish you all the best.

I want to do an MBA to progress in my career and my experience with dealing with people from different sections of society and handling credit across different sectors can surely help me in achieving my career goals

Hi Arjun1001 hope this finds you well

1. Your GPA is low. Try to make up for it with a high GMAT score. You will be surprised how much a GPA of less than 7 with a not-so-impressive GMAT can hurt chances at IIM A and ISB.

2. Since your background is in public banking and commerce, let me share some ideas to get you thinking about your story. Note that my ideas are examples of how you can present an exciting profile even as a public sector professional. To tell a strong story, you might talk about your motivation for working in the public sector. Perhaps you have interesting insights into delivering projects that impact specific populations (an extreme example is delivering projects to the bottom of the Indian economy). Demonstrate compassionate leadership skills through stories and an iron will to mobilize such sectors post-MBA by leveraging your prior public sector experience and post-MBA enhanced business acumen. Be clear about your goals, show that you have networked with people in your target industry (and ISB graduates), and research your goals well. Goals that align with your current experience will seem compelling. This will require further discussion and research, but I think you can leverage your expertise to work in various positions in the public sector, consulting, startups, etc.

The description of your profile only begins to show the potential that could be in your application. Sports seem to be an essential part of your life, therefore use this in your personal narrative. You could also think about instances where you have taken the initiative outside of work, such as participating in an immersion program to learn a new language or get to know another culture, organizing activities at work, participating in intercultural training or cultural events, organizing training for your colleagues and so on.

Reach out should you need professional guidance.

Best wishes

Hi Aman2100 hope this finds you well.

Strategy and FP&A/ Financial due diligence is top tier kind of experience at Indian B schools. So, you are good experience-wise. A solid GMAT with exceptional essays can get you the much-desired call from the top Indian B Schools on your list. I have worked with a handful of applicants who have had long employment gaps. Schools are forgiving if you demonstrate a highly impactful work experience and a plausible explanation for the gap years.

Pro-tip: ISB is not specifically known for its opportunities in the finance sector. Therefore, research your goals very well and present a seamless narrative with examples of conversations with experts in the role/industry you want to work in post PGP. This will be the one most important aspect in your ISB application. ISB is absolutely finicky about post-PGP goals and expects the applicants to have that clarity.

A 700+ should be good if you clearly emphasize your above average financial acumen and analytical skills in your essays.

Reach out should you need professional guidance.
Best wishes

Hi Thonereturns hope this finds you well

You have a great chance to make it to ISB. Keep striving to pass the 700 thresholds. The higher, the better. I would suggest that you also add IIM A to your list of target schools (there are several advantages to that).

While in the Merchant Navy, I am sure you had the opportunity to interact with foreign nationals and handle difficult situations where you took the lead to solve problems. Reflecting on these experiences, where you demonstrated leadership skills and the ability to resolve conflicts under high pressure, will certainly put you in a good light.

You would be a great fit for the Amazon Pathways program. Do not limit yourself to that, however, because the opportunities in Operations Leadership are endless. You can even look at more strategic roles such as supply chain network design/ supply chain product design/ planning/ analytics if you have a more analytical focus. Do not be afraid to outline your thoughts on your career goals in the essay and also list an alternative plan (Plan B) that would also allow you to achieve your goals. Demonstrate active engagement with the alumni network or potential recruiters to further differentiate yourself.

If you would like professional advice on creating a compelling application, do reach out.

Best wishes

Hi swaftnishant hope this finds you well

As you know in order to break into opportunities in the healthcare consulting sector, though your background as a medical practitioner is certainly an advantage during the competitive admissions process, your goals narrative is vague and needs to be further shaped.

This may be an unpopular opinion, but I think you should apply to ISB once you have gained at least 2 years of work experience. Your profile would be much stronger as a doctor/Physican with experience than one without it (not considering your internships, clinical training etc)

Pro Tip- In your application, to demonstrate your ‘fit’ with healthcare strategy consulting, you must connect the cases/projects you have worked on to draw insights about the section of the healthcare industry you are most interested in (post MBA). As a healthcare practitioner, how would your experience and knowledge of the on-ground problems make you a valuable resource at MBA as well as in roles that you will pursue thereafter (especially consulting)? This narrative will carry most of the weight in the admissions process.

ISB is not necessarily known for healthcare careers, however you can find some good consulting positions surely. Showcase thorough research into the "uniqueness" of the ISB PGP program that resonates with your goals to appear a serious applicant. Reach out to the school, alumni, and industry recruiters to get a read on your profile and set expectations accordingly. Use these engagements and conversations to add authenticity to your goals essays.

Your ECs are alright. But your professional experience and goals narrative would make or break your case.

Reach out should you need professional guidance
Best wishes
