1. Which of the following is a word in the passage that is most closely synonymous with “paradox”?

a) Autonomy
b) Sovereignty
c) Commemoration
d) Desire
e) Conundrum

Answer should be E, IMO. It can be deduced from the following part of the passage -
Croatia’s desire to put itself under Austrian control was a conundrum because Croatia had recently liberated itself from Hungarian rule

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2. According to the passage, the outcome of the 1848 confrontation between Croatia and Hungary was

a) an unadulterated victory for Croatia
b) an embarrassment for Austria
c) a disappointment for Rebecca West
d) the conquest of Croatia by Hungary
e) a triumph that Croatia did not get to enjoy

Answer should be E, IMO. It can be deduced from the following part of the passage -
Yellatchitch came to the defense of the Habsburgs when Hungary threatened to depose them in 1848, leading the Croat army to victory in Austria’s name. But after offering their fervent support to Austria, the Croats received only treachery and betrayal in return. Instead of guaranteeing Croat autonomy, the Habsburgs consigned them once again to subjection under Hungary.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

3. Given the facts presented in the passage, it is possible to validly infer all of the following EXCEPT:

a) Croatia was at a disadvantage when fighting Hungary. [Last line of 2nd Para]
b) The Habsburgs ceded Croatia to Hungary as a form of punishment.
c) The 1848 battle between Croatia and Hungary cost many lives. [Complete 2nd para points at this]
d) West believes the monument to General Yellatchitch is not agreeable or appropriate [3-5 lines of Last Para]
e) General Yellatchitch led troops into war because he anticipated a favorable result for Croatia. [Last 4 lines of 2nd Para]

Answer should be B, IMO. For the rest of the options, place of reference is mentioned next to it

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

4. In the first paragraph, the idiom “sold out” is closest to the meaning of which of the following?

a) Received money in payment for
b) No longer in stock
c) Transferred power of
d) Betrayed
e) Lost control of

Answer should be C, IMO.
Was confused between C and D for this, but went with C because when I replaced sold out with the meanings mentioned, C seemed to be a better fit than D.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

5. The function of the final sentence is most accurately described as

a) An answer to a rhetorical question
b) A starting-point for future study
c) A conclusion to an extended argument
d) A piece of evidence for a claim that had previously been unsupported
e) An example that substantiates a previously abstract concept

Could not finalize on the answer on this one. But, went with C as it seemed to be the only option to be relatable to final sentence
Answer should be C, IMO.

Q1.
"Paradox" means a self-contradictory statement.
Reference to the para2 - "Croatia’s desire to put itself under Austrian control was a conundrum because Croatia had recently liberated itself from Hungarian rule."
Using this sentence, the author was confused as to why Croatia would give power to Austria again after it was just liberated from Hungary. This is similar/ nearest to the usage of the word Option E Conundrum, meaning a amusing question.

Q2.
A. Its is technically a victory, but literally is not. Because Croatia was put back under Hungary, by Austria.
B. For readers it may be true, that itseems like embarassment for Austria. But actually Austria planned to Betray Croatia. So not an embarrassment.
C. It may be true that Rebecca West felt disappointed, but that is not the outcome of the confrontation. Her disppointment is a bi-product of confrontation.
D. Again this is a bi-product. It is not the direct outcome of the confrontation.
E. Correct This correctly describes the phenomenon. The confrontation led to triumph, but the triumph did not lead to their liberation.

Q3.
A. This can be inferred from the last sentence of 2nd para - "less-powerful Croats". This means that Croatia was disadvantaged compared to Hungary.
B. This can be inferred. Technically The Habsburg won the fight, but still they submitted Croatia to Hungary. This means its a sort of punishment to Habsburg from Hungary.
C. This can be inferred from last word of the passage - "meaningless sacrifice."
D. Correct This is true for author. But for West, it is made sense and was agreeable. Can be inferred from entire last para.
E. This can be inferred from para2 - "But after offering their fervent support to Austria, the Croats received only treachery and betrayal in return."

Q4.
A. Out of context. Austrians did not receive any money in return.
B. This is funny in this context and is wrong.
C. Correct Austrians transferred their power over Croatia to Hungary.
D. This is true from the perspective of Croatia.
E. No. Sold out in this context does not mean lost control of.

Q5.
A. Correct. This is the writing of author of the passage. He questions us first and then answers from the POV of West.
B. Last sentence does not lead towards another study.
C. There is no argument in the first place.
D. No evidence can be inferred from this sentence.
E. The passage is not talking about any abstract concept.

a) Autonomy
b) Sovereignty
c) Commemoration
d) Desire
e) Conundrum

Correct Answer - E,
Explanation - This option seems the most close in meaning to Paradox. Others don't, as mentioned in the passage: "Croatia’s desire to put itself under Austrian control was a conundrum because Croatia had recently liberated itself from Hungarian rule."

2. According to the passage, the outcome of the 1848 confrontation between Croatia and Hungary was

a) an unadulterated victory for Croatia

Instead of guaranteeing Croat autonomy, the Habsburgs consigned them once again to subjection under Hungary,".
Option A - incorrect, it was not a victory for Croatia.
Option B - incorrect, as Austria won the war with help of Croatia.
Option C - incorrect, out of scope
Option D - incorrect, as Hungary was not able to conquer Croatia, but they were consigned by Habsburgs to subjection under Hungary.

3. Given the facts presented in the passage, it is possible to validly infer all of the following EXCEPT:

a) Croatia was at a disadvantage when fighting Hungary.
b) The Habsburgs ceded Croatia to Hungary as a form of punishment.
c) The 1848 battle between Croatia and Hungary cost many lives.
d) West believes the monument to General Yellatchitch is not agreeable or appropriate
e) General Yellatchitch led troops into war because he anticipated a favorable result for Croatia.

Option C - incorrect, its an obvious one, as its a battle so lives will be lost, therefore, it can be easily and validly inferred.
Option D - incorrect, it can be inferred, as mentioned in the passage: "For West, the statue of Yellatchitch stands as a reminder of a brief but lapsed moment when liberation from imperial power seemed imminent but did not ultimately arrive. It is a perverse commemoration of the dashed hopes of 1848."
Option E - incorrect, it can be inferred, its mentioned in the 2nd para.

4. In the first paragraph, the idiom “sold out” is closest to the meaning of which of the following?

a) Received money in payment for
b) No longer in stock
c) Transferred power of

a) An answer to a rhetorical question
b) A starting-point for future study

Correct Answer - A
Explanation - its mostly the answer to the rhetorical question that West's asks before answering it as mentioned in the passage: "If for the Croats the victory “might as well have been a defeat,” and for the Hungarians vice versa, why leave the statue in the middle of the town square?"
Option B - incorrect, as out of scope.
Option C - incorrect, it doesn't seem the starting point for future study.
Option D - incorrect, its not an evidence, just an answer to a rhetorical question.
Option E - incorrect, its not an example of anything.

Official Explanation

4. In the first paragraph, the idiom “sold out” is closest to the meaning of which of the following?

Difficulty Level: 600

Explanation

The idiom “sold out” should be understood in the context of the “loyalty” that is being questioned in the last sentence of the first paragraph. That sentence can be paraphrased, “Why were the Croats loyal to the Austrians, when the Austrians were not loyal to the Croats?”

Answers (A) and (B) reflect other meanings of the idiom “sold out,” but not meanings that make sense in this context. Also, note that answer (B) is not grammatically parallel with “sold out” and cannot be substituted for it.

Answer (C) is true according to the passage: Austria did transfer control of Croatia to Hungary (not lose control of Croatia; eliminate answer (E)). But the idiom “sold out” is less neutral than “transferred power of.” It carries a negative connotation reflected in answer (D), the correct choice.

Note also that the relationship between Austria and Croatia is described in terms of “treachery and betrayal” in the second paragraph, a clue that “Betrayed” is a good choice here.

Answer: D
