Members of penitentiary arts gallery said that they no longer wanted to be tax evaders like many entertainers[/u].

A. Members of penitentiary arts gallery said that they no longer wanted to be tax evaders like many entertainers.

B. Like many entertainers, members of penitentiary arts gallery said that they no longer wanted to be tax evaders.

C. Like many other entertainers, members of penitentiary arts gallery said that they no longer wanted to be tax evaders.

D. Members of penitentiary arts gallery said that they no longer wanted to be like tax evaders and many other entertainers.

E. Like many other entertainers, tax evaders and members of penitentiary arts gallery said that they no longer wanted to be that.

Why A can't be the answer?

A can be interpreted in two ways-
1. Many entertainers are tax evaders, and member of PA do not want to be like them
2. Many entertainers said they do not want to evade tax and members of PA are also of the same opinion.

The meaning/intent is not clear, hence incorrect.

Hello thinkTheta,
What is the difference between B & C.

I would love to explain that...
In B, Like many entertainers include "members of penitentiary arts gallery", but that is not what the sentence is trying to convey.
In C, Like many other entertainers exclude "members of penitentiary arts gallery" and hence the comparison is clear.
I hope this helps

What is a member of a penitentiary art gallery?

I looked up the word and it seems to be some kind of prison.

But are member of such a gallery inmates that craft art? (most likely I guess)
The other thing I had in mind: Members of a club that support the art gallery. These members don't necessarily need to be artists. (less likely).

Hence, I was confused whether we can talk about "other entertainers".

Can someone please elaborate on this issue? I understand why C is correct but this specific question still stands.

In this question , I have two issues to discuss
1. As it is given many entertainers , then also do we need others
2. As I believe Members of Art Gallery are not entertainers,Entertainers are those who perform

abhimahna Here is my analysis

In Option A the comparison is not clear
There are two possible meanings
Many entertainers are tax evaders, and members of Penitentiary art gallery do not want to be like them
Many entertainers said they do not want to evade tax and members of the art gallery also do not want to evade tax
Hence Option A is eliminated

Option E has awkward sentence construction in usage of that in the last part of the sentence
Option D also has ambiguity and the comparison is not clear

Now we are left with Options B and C.

I am able to arrive at the correct answer but would like to know the exact reason for eliminating Option B
The comparison according to me is clear and coherent in Option C hence I marked C

Kindly throw some light on it

Thanks in advance....

Hey vasuca10 ,

I would consider this question a poor quality question.

Both B and C could be the right answers depending on how you intrepret the meaning of the sentence.

If you consider "Members of penitentiary arts gallery" an entertainers, Option C is correct because then you will compare one kind of entertainers with the "rest" of the entertainers.

But if you consider "Members of penitentiary arts gallery" non entertainers, option B could be correct because in that case you will compare entertainers with non entertainers.

Moral of the story: Work on Good Quality Questions. :-)

Does that make sense?

Poor quality question
Both B and C are problematic.

B. Like many entertainers, members of penitentiary arts gallery said that they no longer wanted to be tax evaders.
C. Like many other entertainers, members of penitentiary arts gallery said that they no longer wanted to be tax evaders.

Like A(entertainers), B(Members of art gallery) "Said" <----

See that verb

A is ambiguous in its meaning, thanks to a lack of proper punctuation. B incorrectly implies that “members of the penitentiary gallery” is includes in “like many entertainers”. D changes the meaning to say that the gallery members no longer wanted to be like either tax evaders and many other entertainers. E also changes the meaning to imply that tax evaders and members of the gallery no longer wanted to be like criminals.

Hence C is the only correct choice.
