Can someone please explain why E (had immigrated) is not correct?
samiramir

This ques also tests on "parallelism" because of the marker "and" immediately after the comma. "immigrated", "lived" and "worked" are parallel in tense, hence "had immigrated" if used will make it unparallel.

That's helpful. Added the tag. Thank you!

More than 130,000 Arabs had immigrated to the United States as part of the Great Migration and lived and worked across the breadth of the united states fighting its many wars and engaged in the transformative debates that raged throughout this time period.

A. Arabs had immigrated to the United States as part of the Great Migration, and lived and worked across the breadth of United states, fighting its many wars and engaged

B. Arabs immigrated to the United States as part of the Great Migration, and lived and worked across the breadth of United states, fighting its many wars and engaging

C. Arabs immigrated to the United States ,and had lived and worked across the breadth of United states, fighting its many wars as part of the Great Migration and engaging

D. Arabs immigrated to the United States, and lived and worked across the breadth of United states as part of the Great Migration, fighting its many wars and engaged

E. Arabs had immigrated to the United States as part of the Great Migration, and lived and worked across the breadth of United states, fighting its many wars and engaging

The correct choice is B. In B, it seems that 'immigrated', 'lived', and 'worked' parallel way. If this is the case i am just confused how we used COMMA after the word 'migration'.

Hi, need some help to clarify something.
", and lived and worked"
What does that ", and" do in this sentence? It is the second (and last) of a list so I would expect that to be without the comma.
When I see ", and" and it is not a list of three or more I automatically think it is opening a new IC (as in the structure "IC, and IC") and "lived and worked across the breadth of United states" does not seem to be a standalone IC.
What am I getting wrong?

Hello OriZi,

We hope this finds you well.

To answer your query, "lived" and "worked" are not listed together with "immigrated", rather they are part of a separate list; the sentence says that Arabs immigrated to the United States as part of the Great Migration, and as a separate action they lived and worked across the breadth of United States.

We hope this helps.
All the best!
