Thanks for sharing your profile. Interesting background with a strong GMAT should have you in play at some top programs. You have provided limited information but if your GPA is also in line with top program avgs of 3.6 and you have made a clear impact in your entrepreneurial career you can probably target top 15 programs

Hello respected Experts :)

It is so overwhelming to see your prompt replies. I get immensely motivated from you all. Vibranture : Sir thanks for these articles, very deliberately written providing crux of what is the actual scenario.

Carrying forward our conversation, I am a 25 year old guy. I completed my B.Tech with 70% marks overall ( My country uses a Percentage system). I left Army in this January end ie. 2016. Its not been very long since I left the forces, yet it took me a month or two to figure out what to do next. I had two options, starting my own venture or doing an MBA. I decided to begin with both and while tackling business my intention of pursuing an MBA solidified because I felt the need of basic and advanced business knowledge alongwith great networks. Regarding the "Illumination parts" line I have just started this line along with my brother and Fabrication business is a family thing. I am expecting a steep rise very soon in the coming 8-9 months (point X ---> point Y). After MBA I would like to work for some years with Big Organisations to learn how things operate at a bigger level and then probably start up my own business line, further brand creation and ---- it follows.

You are welcome Deepankar :)

Given your GMAT score (and profile), if you are strategic about your school choices, you might also stand a good chance at scholarships. One of my students from Delhi had a score of 740 and got 60% and 100% scholarships from two very good US programs.

On the other hand, reading more about your post-MBA plans, I want to add that you must further clarify your reasons for MBA and the career goals. Having a military and family business background makes you unique- which is great! But on the flip side, you have to go an extra mile to convince the admission committee why you need an MBA and how that particular school will help you get to your career goals.

It is also critical to know what 'Big Organisations' you will be targeting and why. AND would help you to know that not ALL companies are open to hiring/sponsoring international students because of visa/immigration restrictions. As an international student from India, I went through the same process myself several years ago and I can tell you, it is more complex than it seems :)

So, take this time to conduct research:
Externally- about the options and opportunities about schools and employers
Internally- about what exactly you want to be doing in next 10-15 years. Plans will change, but for applications, you will need to be focused.

Good luck with everything!

Adding a few more perspectives for you Deepak:
  1. At the outset, the profile seems pretty interesting - but interesting can be both positive and negative. The different things you've done could potentially fracture your experience in disparate areas leading to some non-ideal conclusions. So it is super critical to articulate your career decisions and connect the dots - both forward and backward. Spend time on doing that.
  2. The GMAT is awesome and should help you overcome partly the average (?) GPA. There is no mention of ECs/Volunteer/Hobby - could be important when it comes to the top schools.
  3. For reasons mentioned here, we don't really speculate on your school selection. That said, if you play your cards well and know where MBA can (and cannot) take you, things should be pretty bright for you.

Hope this helps some

Cheers,

Deepankar,

Thank you for your detailed profile information. I would love to find out more about your business. What does your revenue look like today relative to your projections once you leave for business school?

I would suggest you apply to a range of schools within the top 10-15. It will be important to connect the different elements of your story together, though if you do that you should have a good chance at schools such as Columbia, Tuck, Anderson, Ross and Kellogg to name a few.

Send me an email if you want to chat about career counseling and application support. I will walk you through my process: scott@personalmbacoach.com

Best,
Scott

Hello respected Mentors :)

Well could you please suggest me some good resources to read about post MBA and all the stuff ? Some of the resources that I regularly use are Quora, Poets and Quants, FT, QS , youtube, college websites, Student blogs and some random articles. Thanks once again Vibranture, I will surely contact you in case of any help. Thanks Manish sir for the guidance in areas I need to work upon.
Scott well talking about the business, I am yet to purchase machinery. I earlier made a blue print of the processes - raw material collection, manufacturing, production management and etc and etc. I started venturing out in the market for potent buyers and I am very hopeful, about to get my first order in next two weeks. So kind of I am on a roll :) . The right time for the revenues would be I guess 8-9 months down the line. My younger brother is 50% equity holder in this new firm (During MBA he will be there).

Well EC and achievements would include :-
1. I am a classically trained singer (Holding a diploma from a reputed music university in India).
2. I cofounded an E-NGO regarding plantation all around my City, New Delhi. I am reviving it since I have come from Army.
3. University level Badminton player (Singles).
4. Certified commando from Indian Army.
5. Instructor in Platoon weapons, Company support weapons and Company level tactics (Certified from Infantry School, Indian Army).
6. Some confidential Army stuff I have done, missions .

Sounds good Deepankar.

You will find a lot of post-MBA career related stuff here.

On the ECs front, the NGO stuff looks promising. On the Army stuff - not sure if those are ECs assuming it was part of your job?

Cheers,
