My background-
I am a non-native English speaker with primary and secondary education in Marathi Medium. I am a mechanical engineer. I started my GMAT preparation in august 2021. With some background of Marathi medium education, I was worried about verbal section of GMAT. To know my starting point, I gave eGMAT mock and scored 520(Q44 V19). The target score was 700. So, I was 180 points away from my target score.
My preparation-
I started with Magoosh course. I finished quant and verbal course. After 2+ months, I gave official prep mock and scored 630(Q49 V27)-110 points improvement in 2-3 month. So, I thought 4 months should be enough. But, it turned out to be a lot longer. So, I suggest to someone with similar background to take enough time for preparation. If you don't good background of English, first few months will be required overcome this obstacle. In October I took e-GMAT course. This course increased my energy towards studying. I did all the courses in detail. Because I did everything in verbal course with more detail, I extended the access course by 3 months. I finished the course in 6-7 months. Towards the end of the course I took official mocks and scored 680, 710. But, still I was not happy the verbal score (around 35). To improve even further, at this point, I took 2 month subscription of Gmatwhiz. On Gmatwhiz I studied verbal module, while simultaneously solving questions from official guide. Thanks to Piyush from whiz for sharing with me strategies for preparation. After this, on GMAT prep mock I scored 730. So, I took appointment for test center GMAT.
In July 2022, I gave my first GMAT attempt and scored 620(Q44 V32), which is lower than my prep mock score a year ago. The questions were not that difficult and I completed all questions within time. But I was not confident. On quant, questions felt little different. So, I ended up taking more time for each question and got under time pressure. Reason must be that I did not practice enough with official questions. On verbal, on first three SC questions I ended up guessing. I was not able to understand the error in these questions and choices seemed confusing. In my view, it was because I did not know what to expect. This can happen in first attempt. To avoid this, practicing enough with official questions is necessary.
After Devastating 1st attempt, I watched video of one student on YouTube. This student suggested solving more official questions. So, I took subscription for Gmatclub quizzes. Here, all official and other questions are available in abundant quantity. I practiced for two months using these questions and I reviewed all questions in detail using the processes that I leant on eGMAT. I did very detailed reviews as well. To be honest, I did review of each SC quiz (10-15 questions) for 1-2 hours and in some cases 2+ hours throughout my preparation. At this point I was confident on all sections of the exam. On 6th October 2023, 1.2 years after starting my prep, I gave my second attempt, and ended up scoring 710(Q50 V36). One of things I experienced is that as you get used to test, your score improves. So, don't hesitate to give multiple attempts. And, my learning is that I should have taken my first attempt few months earlier. So, I advise to not postpone your test plan too much.
eGMAT course is one of the highlights in my preparation. I used process steps that I learned on eGMAT throughout my preparation and in my tests. Cementing process, Scholeranium 2.0 questions, video lesions by Payal mam, and process steps for all sections of verbal built skills that I needed for the test. My quarries were answered by Shraddha mam, Kanupriya and Harsha, logically. Finally, Dhananjay and Rida analyzed my mocks and gave me steps to improve. I really appreciate such a big support from eGMAT team.
How I improved Verbal skills through extra reading-
To improve my verbal skill I read other books and articles as well. I read books such as Wealth of Nations, Sapiens, Theory of Everything and some other articles from different websites. These books and articles cover topics that also help to understand RC passages from science, history, economics, humanities etc. I read few articles from arts and letters daily. So, I suggest to give some time for reading every once in a while. While reading try to break down the sentence in smaller chunks (eGMAT master comprehension method) to understand most of what you read.
