New fall shows added to the television network’s upcoming weeknight schedule have increased overall viewership, critical acclaim, popularity among all age groups, and have decreased ratings on the network’s shows online

A) popularity among all age groups, and have decreased

B) popularity among all age groups, and decreased

C) and popularity among all age groups, while decreasing

D) increased popularity among all age groups, but decreased

E) and popularity among all age groups were increased, while decreasing

New fall shows added to the television network’s upcoming weeknight schedule have increased overall viewership, critical acclaim, popularity among all age groups, and have decreased ratings on the network’s shows online

1. New fall shows have increased

-------------overall viewership,
-------------critical acclaim,
-------------( something has to be put in the blank )………………………which is parallel to the above two : ( Guess, nothing but POPULARITY find a place ) : D, which is INCREASED POPULARITY goes into elimination zone

2. The first half says about INCREASE………………The second half says about DECREASE ( so there’s a contrast, we cannot use AND ) : A/B into elimination zone

3. A/B/D are out..............Between C & E :

a. C : Shows have increase popularity………………………
b. E : Shows have increased popularity…….......were increased

E goes into the elimination zone.

Thus left with C, the OA……………..my understanding

Parallelism is the key.three items should be in parallel:: overall viewership, critical acclaim, popularity among all age groups.
There should be a and before last item.

popularity among all age groups, and have decreased
Missing And before popularity..
popularity among all age groups, and decreased
Missing And before popularity..
and popularity among all age groups, while decreasing
correct,
increased popularity among all age groups, but decreased
Missing And before popularity..
and popularity among all age groups were increased, while decreasing
were increased is redundant and is breaking parallelism.

Why not parallel structure between (A):

New fall shows added to the television network’s upcoming weeknight schedule have increased overall viewership, critical acclaim, popularity among all age groups, and have decreased ratings on the network’s shows online.

New fall shows
Have increased A, B, and C
And Have decreased D

A) popularity among all age groups, and have decreased - And is missing before third item in sub-list.
B) popularity among all age groups, and decreased -Same as A
C) and popularity among all age groups, while decreasing - Correct.
D) increased popularity among all age groups, but decreased - Shows have increased ''Increased popularity''...seems wrong and redundant. And is required to separate items.
E) and popularity among all age groups were increased, while decreasing - Noun are made parallel with clause. Wrong.

Kudos please....

Why do we expected "have decreased - have increased" but accepted " have increased - decreasing" in D?
Please clarify, thank you.

McQueen, the simple answer is that "while" is not a parallel marker. It indicates a modifier that builds on the earlier action. The fall shows have increased 3 things, and they have done all this while decreasing something else. Using a parallel verb linked with "and" or "but" would work as well, but there's nothing wrong with the modifier form in C. (I'm assuming you meant C, not D.)

New fall shows added to the television network’s upcoming weeknight schedule have increased overall viewership, critical acclaim, popularity among all age groups, and have decreased ratings on the network’s shows online

A) [and] popularity among all age groups, and have decreased – require “and” before final element that was increased

B) [and] popularity among all age groups, and decreased – require “and” before final element that was increased

C) and popularity among all age groups, while decreasing [not sure about this, but doesn't seem wrong either] [Correct]

D) [and] increased popularity among all age groups, but decreased – require “and” before final element that was increased. second "increase" is redundant

E) and popularity among all age groups were increased, while decreasing – second "increase" is redundant

popularity among all age groups, and have decreased
popularity among all age groups, and decreased
and popularity among all age groups, while decreasing
increased popularity among all age groups, but decreased
and popularity among all age groups were increased, while decreasing

Two parallel elements are mentioned in the sentence-
1) 'have increased viewership' and ' have decreased ratings'
2) viewership, critical acclaim and popularity among all age groups

popularity among all age groups, and have decreased and is missing to have 2nd parallel elements
popularity among all age groups, and decreased and is missing to have 2nd parallel elements
and popularity among all age groups, while decreasing correct choice.
increased popularity among all age groups, but decreased 'increased' is not required
and popularity among all age groups were increased, while decreasing 'increased' is not required

D) increased popularity among all age groups, but decreased

E) and popularity among all age groups were increased, while decreasing

Here in the above question, parallelism is at issue.
Viewership, acclaim, and popularity have to parallel and without any conjunction before the third itme parallelism cannot be established.
C offers us the same
Hence C is correct

OFFICIAL EXPLANATION

The correct response is (C). Adding new fall shows have increased overall viewership, acclaim, and popularity. However, they have also decreased online viewership for that network . For sentence clarity, the list of three elements that have been increased require “and” before the final element. Also, contrast is needed between these three positive effects and the one negative outcome for the overall meaning of the sentence to make sense.

Hi,

I am confused about this question,
I was expecting to see an option which has " have increased - while ....have decreased"
So isn't there any problems with the usage "have increased- while decreasing" in the OA, don't these need to be parallel?

I will appreciate any clarification.

In strict sense "while" is a conjunction and hence a subject and verb should follow. But here "while"+ "participle" is also acceptable. Here it acts as an adverbial modifier and gives us additional information about another effect.
