Project SC Butler: Day 58: Sentence Correction (SC1)

For SC butler Questions Click Here

Pierre-Auguste Renoir, as opposed from artists such as Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin, received great acclaim for his work even before his death in 1919.

A. as opposed from artists such as Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin,
B. in contrast to artists’ work such as Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin,
C. unlike the work of artists such as Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin,
D. unlike that of Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin,
E. unlike artists such as Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin,

The best/excellent answers get kudos, which will be awarded after the answer is revealed.
There may be no best/excellent answers, or a there may be a few excellent answers!

Options B, C and D compare artist (Pierre-Auguste Renoir) to other artist's work which is illogical comparison. In option A, "as opposed from" is incorrect. "As opposed to" is the correct form.
Option E correctly compares Pierre-Auguste Renoir to Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin. Hence E should be the right answer.

C. unlike the work of artists such as Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin,
D. unlike that of Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin,
E. unlike artists such as Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin,

My reasoning:

A) as opposed from is incorrect, it should be as opposed to.

B) Comparison error. You must compare a human to a human, not to a work of art

C) Same as B

D) What is that referring to here? I'm not sure hence this is wrong

E) Correct

There may be no best/excellent answers, or a there may be a few excellent answers!

This answer allows us to kill three birds with one stone thus I will rather focus on the concept/approach rather than each individual answer choice.

Our sentence starts by mentioning a person and not a persons work or his/her characteristics.
Therefore, we have to make sure that our comparison is focused on comparing apples to apples (e.g. human to human) rather than apples to oranges (e.g. person to attribute or achievement).

The answer choices B, C & D all make the mistake of comparing things (e.g. work) to the person of Renoir.
This leaves us with A and E as the only remaining options.

However, AC A contains a significant idiomatic mistake, when using "as opposed"... we have to follow this up with a "to" rather than a "from".

Thus, AC E remains as the only correct option.

Hope this helps :)

Regards,
Chris

The intended comparison is between an artist, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, who received great acclaim and other artists who did not.
All except E compare artist with other artists' work.

Here, Pierre-Auguste Renoir (PAR) received great acclaim. so comparison must be between the artists such as van gogh and gauguin. B and C goes out of the window.
A: as opposed from artists. PAR was not opposed by anyone- Wrong

D: Unlike that of: what does "That" refer to? Wrong

E: unlike artists such as Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin: Correct comparison is between artists

Official Explanation:

it’s not clear how the sentence should be corrected. As opposed goes with the word to, not from, which eliminates option (A).The comparison is between the artists themselves (Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin vs.Pierre-Auguste Renoir), and not their work. As a result, answers (B), (C), and (D) cannot be correct.

Pierre-Auguste Renoir, as opposed from artists such as Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin, received great acclaim for his work even before his death in 1919.

Meaning analysis: Renoir was not like some other artists were, he was praised when he was alive. So main comparison in this sentence is between Renoir and other artists. This comparison should be logically and grammatically //.

Error analysis: As we noticed main error is comparison and //ism here, idiom “opposed from” is incorrect for comparison in this sentence, moreover correct form of idiom is “opposed to”. "as" for comparison must be followed by clause, hence is incorrect here

A. as opposed from artists such as Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin,

B. in contrast to artists’ work such as Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin,
(Pierre-Auguste Renoir is not // to artists’ work such as Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin)

C. unlike the work of artists such as Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin,
(Pierre-Auguste Renoir is not // to work of artists such as Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin)

D. unlike that of Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin,
(Pierre-Auguste Renoir is not // to that of Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin, “that of” has no antecedent)

E. unlike artists such as Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin,
(Pierre-Auguste Renoir is // to artists such as Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin)

So answer choice E is correct

(please correct if you see any mistakes or gaps in my explanation, thank you)
