Hi, please evaluate my profile, plan to apply for a B-school in the US, like Johnson, NYU

Profile: 25 years old female, from China, moved to NYC 3 years ago, currently holding a F-1 Visa
GMAT: 710 (Q50, V 36)
Master majors in Finance at Fordham University, GPA 3.22
Bachelor majors in Finance in China, GPA 3.3
had 3 internship experience in commercial bank and asset management firm, total 12 months
full time experience total is 2 years:
1) 12 months for a startup firm specializing in holding social events for hedge fund managers and investors. one of the 3 full time employees, and managed the intern team for 8-10 people
2) current position is at a online brokerage firm, working in the operation team. The only Chinese in the company.

Activities: Started a Hiking club when I was in college, and successfully launch it to an association, along with other 3 top universities in Shanghai. Total members are around 200 people.

Hello there!
And great to hear from you.
So let's jump right into your profile!

The good stuff:
- Female candidate
- Serious US experience
- Very nice GMAT

The challenges:
- Chinese applicant
- Not strong work experience
- Non target university for top programs.

All in all, things are prettty good, although I think Top 10 schools would be out of range. But no big deal! All schools in the top 30/50 are pretty awesome. I would say concentrate your focus on the 10-30 range.

The most important thing for you to do right now is to figure out your GOALS. What do you want? Why? What connection does that have with your past? If you can make an awesome story there, you will convince the AdCom.

Best.

So you have some pros and you have some cons when it comes to your profile. In my opinion none of these cons can’t be overcome with great essays though, it will all come down to how good you are at selling yourself to the adcom. So that will be your challenge at this point, rather than retaking the GMAT etc., as I see it.

Don’t be afraid of getting professional help for your application either if you are not confident about your abilities regarding that, it can make a huge difference!

Good luck!

Hi sabrina0731, I will make comments about your profile below. Thanks for reaching out.
Profile: 25 years old female, from China, moved to NYC 3 years ago, currently holding a F-1 Visa
GMAT: 710 (Q50, V 36)For a very competitive pool like you are in, the GMAT of 710 is on lower side, and your gpa is also on lower side of avg. But here are your pluses- being female, having worked in the US and attended school here so I assume your English is strong- this is very important and can be something that will set you apart so leverage this. Continue to practice written and spoken English so that it is impeccable. Also while your work experience is on the light side, it is good that you have focus on finance.
You need to explain why you need an MBA after the M Finance- is it more leadership? to broaden beyond finance? why do you need this? what is your long term career goal? Having solid answers to these questions is what will help you be successful.

2) current position is at a online brokerage firm, working in the operation team. The only Chinese in the company. If you broaden a bit beyond Cornell and NYU and look at some other programs like SMU Cox, U Rochester, Indiana, Emory, Wash U,
Olin etc, I think you may not only be more successful, you might possibly even gain some funding if they like your work experience.
And if you can try to up your GMAT just even a bit more I think it could really help you. I think you have a solid shot- but I would make sure to include some safety schools in the mix too.
