Hello,

I'd like to request for a profile evaluation and recommendation for my application
in MSc Fin or MBA.

Here is my profile:

I am South East Asian who is now a citizen of New Zealand. I have
been living here for 7 years.

Education

2nd Year Applied Mathematics
University of the Philippines — did not finish,
relocation to New Zealand

2nd Year BS Electrical and Electronic Eng with Honours
Auckland University of Technology — did not finish, work full-time, bills, wrong
priorities, happy go lucky, irresponsible

BBus Marketing
Auckland University of Technology — Graduate

Exchange Student (1 term)
John Molson School of Business, Concordia University, Montreal, Canada

My GPA for BBus Marketing is 3.3.

Work

1 year PT — Regional Service Controller: supporting 63 stores across New
Zealand in re reverse-logistics

0.5 years PT — Admin Assistant to GM of Operations for the same company
(offered permanent role but declined due to departure to Canada)

1 year FT(ongoing) — Public Transport in Auckland as Information Specialist
responsible for creation and development all public transport timetables
and brochures in Auckland.

GMAT

I took a mock up GMAT and got 100% in Quant but did terrible in Verbal. I
got 680 overall score. My target is to get minimum 700 Overall.

Questions

1. I would like to transition into Finance and get into Wall St — would this be a
stretch? Would MS Fin be more ideal than MBA?

2. I was looking into Stern, LSE, LBS, and UCL -- would this be possible? What
other schools would you recommend?

3. Would MIT, HBS, Wharton, etc be asking for too much?

Thank you so much and I'm looking forward to hearing from you.

Hi there,

Great questions! If I'm interpreting your profile correctly, it looks like you started and stopped several masters programs and only have 1 year of full time work experience (part time doesn't count). If that's correct, then I would recommend that you get more full time experience before applying to top full time programs. They will be looking to see career progression and that you've taken on leadership roles (whether formal or informal) in your job and community. Depending on what your transcript looks like, you may need to explain the personal and academic rationale behind your moves from school program to program.

That said, if you can show leadership and career progression (which is a proxy for potential to adcom), explain your academic history, increase your GMAT and write killer essays (eg. you need strong goals that focus on the "why" behind them), then you could be a strong candidate for your target schools. As for the HBS's of the world, that's always a stretch, but if you can get your score up etc, then it may be worth a shot, especially if you have a really strong personal and goals story.

Hope that helps and best of luck!

Hi,

I recently gave my GMAT and scored a 770, with 49 on quant and 47 on verbal. My IR score is 7, and AWA score is 4. I'm afraid my low AWA score will act as a hindrance in me getting into a good university. Could you through some light on this, and possibly suggest of I should give the GMAT again, just for the sake of a low AWA score.

Thanks!
