Hello,
My name is Nhu from Vietnam. I'm 23 years old. I will apply for MBA program, concentration in Marketing (Marketing Analytics/Market Research), Fall 2017.
Currently, I'm researching on schools to finalise the school list. Therefore, I would really appreciate if you guys could help to evaluate my profile.
I took my undergraduate degree in Vietnam, majored in International Finance with GPA: 3.41/4.0 (top 10% of major). My GMAT score: 720 (Q:50 - V:36).
Working experience:
Full-time WE so far: 16 months. I have been working as a marketing executive in a foreign commercial bank in Vietnam, in charge of sales-up promotions for credit cards, digital marketing channels. My team scale is quite small (6 people) divided into 3 sub-teams, I lead 01 team and at the same time get involved in another team.
Part-time WE: 9 months as a research associate at a head-hunting company.
Extracirricular activities:
1. 3 years in a student-run club at university: get involved in marketing & fund-raising activities/ marketing leader of a big project then was promoted to the position of marketing manager.
2. 1 year in a club for alumni of a 15-year scholarship: executive board - organize events to connect all generations
3. 7 months in a program for SMEs: connect SMEs with experienced mentors.
Awards: 02 scholarships during university (quite prestigious and big)
Goals:
Short-term: Get an internship & an offer to work in a market research US firm (2 years)
Mid-term: Come back to Vietnam, marketing in a financial company (banking/ card companies)
Long-term: Work as a consultant in a market research company for banking/financial industry.
Below are schools I intend to apply this year:
1. Crosby MBA - University of Missouri
2. Smeal
3. Texas A&M
4. William & Mary
5. Indiana Kelley
I'm still researching on schools but really need your advice & consultancy or suggestions on choosing schools. With my profile & career orientation, which schools should I aim for?
Besides, my lack of working experience is a great disadvantage, so I wonder if there are any other credentials I should build to make up for that disadvantage?
Thank you so much for your time!
Hey Nhu,
I also agree that you can apply overall for higher ranked schools. I think (very roughly) your "Sweet spot" should be within the 10-30 rankings.
You have a great GMAT a good background good grades and come from a country from which the AdComs see relatively few candidates, all of which should help you.
The one hesitation I have is whether you should apply this year or next, but I think that you can take a shot at it this year if it is better for you.
When you look at schools, have a look to see if your target industry/employers recruit from there. In your case, I'd recommend having a look at: Johnson, Kelly (you already have it), Tepper, UNC, NYU. It's not an exhaustive list, but a place to start.
Other than that, think about what else you can do now to boost your profile before you actually apply,
If you have any other questions or comments, do not hesitate!
Best,
Jon
