To get into NYU as an Asian with a poor GPA you're going to need a much higher GMAT score than 700.

I also fear that maybe with the role that you have at work, you might have a limited ability to tell stories about teamwork leadership and problem-solving... have you been able to come up with new initiatives, carve a path or create new things?

If not, I agree that you should go for part-time, and even then shoot for a much higher GMAT.

You might also go for Columbia EMBA, if you're located in York. They are open to younger applicants unlike many other EMBA programs.

Hi All,

I need an honest evaluation.

My dream is to go to NYU for an MBA.

I am currently studying to retake my GMAT. I got an unimpressive 640 about 3 years ago. Looking to break 700.

Undergrad GPA is 3.0 - I know this is low.

I have 5 years work experience. My current role is in finance as an analyst at a top law firm.

Any tips or suggestions on how to improve my chances, other than trying to get the highest GMAT score possible?

Thank you.

I was under the assumption that Columbia is harder to get in.

I could use your advice on the leadership part of your comment. I feel like I am a passionate individual who possesses the ability to be a leader. However, my knowledge is limited to just my job. One example is there was a committee I had to attend, which were all attorneys except for myself being in Finance. I was the sole finance member who drove a big part of the meetings with them.

Truthfully speaking, I am feeling extremely discouraged. Obviously I am aiming for the highest GMAT score possible. But if what you are telling me is that even with that, I have very slim chances, I don't know what to do.

Columbia full-time is hard to get in but the executive program operates like a part-time program and part-time programs are always easier to get into.

If you have good leadership examples, then bring those to the for that is great. You want more of those because they will see you more as someone who would succeed in business rather than a specialist role in a law firm.

I'm sorry you feel discouraged, I totally understand. It sucks. You make a few wrong turns and then you're sort of stuck.

I think that these articles would help you gain some clarity. https://mbaessaycoaching.com/category/pre-mba/

I would definitely get involved with a volunteer organization and try to ascend into a leadership role.

It's often a great way to demonstrate leadership qualities, and you can get the opportunity to make a positive impact a little faster than you might at work.
Newyorkcares.org is a place to start.

It's going to take a little time to build the profile that you need to go to a worthwhile business school.

For that reason, I'm not sure full time is the right option. You might wait a couple of years and then strike at some part time and EMBA programs. Or, Sloan Fellows.

You know, Cornell might be a good fit in terms of finance where they are a little less preoccupied with GPA, trick would be that you need to get a really good GMAT and a good-great application. I would say 720 but 700 would make you viable.
