Wow. Lots of Ross vs UNC posts today 👍
I don’t think there’s much of a difference or concern in terms of the location, clothing and weather. In North Carolina can be deceiving because it gets pretty cold at night in the winter. Not a lot of people think about it has a cold place but it does get chilly, not to the extent of Michigan but it’s colder than most expect.
The nice part about UNC is that you do have consulting companies who are keeping their offices on campus and so that would allow you to do coffee chats, interviews, and whatever else to improve your chances of getting an internship and hopefully finally a job. It is harder to recruit for consulting as an international applicant. But this is not because consultants are racist 😂 instead this is a reflection of advantages or disadvantages. Many consulting companies are focused on your ability to think quick on your feet and how will you behave under pressure or when asked a question that you do not know how to answer. It is also about being able to impress your customer and your client. You are not expected to be a grunt on the ground working on spreadsheet models but you are expected to impress your client and justify a $500 an hour fee being charged to them for you. The lot is about client redness which revolves around interview skills and presentation skills. International students tend to perform not as well as domestic because of the cultural differences in the accent and just often focusing on analytical rather than softer skills. If you’re looking to be an consultant, regardless of which ever program you attend, I strongly recommend that you focus on your interview and presentation skills. Those will be highly highly valuable to you in recruiting and also after graduation.
In terms of leadership development programs, I haven’t been seeing a ton of those. Perhaps they’re obscured in someway. I know Microsoft often hires NBA’s and gives them a year to rotate through several departments until they land at the team they would be most effective at. I think you would have to speak to current students to get a sense of how realistic that is and if there’s any on campus recruiting at Ross or UNC for that….
I have known international students who have made the decision to forgo a full scholarship at UNC and McCombs and Foster and chose to go to Ross and pay the full price. They had no regrets. However, it is very hard to look back and reflect how their life would’ve been different had they taken the full scholarship…. However, I have not been hearing of people having hardship paying back their loans. I’ve heard grumbling about having to pay the interest and loans but nobody considered or said that they were not saving money. Several people had goals of paying off their full time alone with in three years. That is achievable. However, most become smarter and start funneling money into their savings and investment accounts since those provide better ROI and they can always use those funds to pay down the loans…. Of course situations change and they’ll be another recession at some point in our lives… Which if you do hit a recession, it is always better to be at a higher ranked program. Brand becomes a lot more valuable during hard times…. So in some twisted and bizarre way, Ross would be a stronger choice during the bad economy 😂
But right now UNC is a great option to get a free MBA.
