Hi antartican,

Many Test Takers face pacing issues in the Quant section, the Verbal section or both – so you are not alone. However, it's important to remember that pacing problems do NOT exist on their own - they're the results of OTHER problems. Most GMAT questions can be approached in more than one way, but if questions are consistently taking you longer to solve, then it's likely that "your way" of approaching the questions is the "long way." There might also be some other 'inefficiencies' in your approach, such as repeatedly rereading the prompt and/or doing work "in your head."

Before I can offer you the specific advice that you’re looking for, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on how you've been studying and your goals:

Studies:
1) How long have you studied? How many hours do you typically study each week?
2) What study materials have you used so far?
3) On what dates did you take EACH of your CATs/mocks and how did you score on EACH (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores for EACH)?

Goals:
4) What is your overall goal score?
5) When are you planning to apply to Business School?
6) What Schools are you planning to apply to?

Hi Rich,
Thanks for the reply.
You are absolutely correct on the point that I sometimes lose focus and repeatedly reread the prompt.
I have reviewed my responses and I dont think I am using long approach often.

Answers to the specific questions:
Studies:
1) How long have you studied? How many hours do you typically study each week?
Ans: I have been studying for 1.5 months now. But this is not the first time. I took GMAT 2 years back and scored a 650 (Q49 V(27-28) dont remember exactly). Then I had to move country and many things happened in life and I did not appear for it again.
I started with 15-20 hrs a week but now clocking 30hrs approx.

2) What study materials have you used so far?
Ans: I have some material from Jamboree when I took up their cours 2 years back, but most of the books are now in another country.
Apart from that I have mostly used OG for Quant and Verbal both.
This time I am taking a lot of help from forum which I did not use earlier. I am doing 700 and 600 level questions using the filters.
Also to mention, I am reading NYT and Nature.com to get accustomed to RC.
3) On what dates did you take EACH of your CATs/mocks and how did you score on EACH (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores for EACH)?
GMAT club Test-
1st Jan- Q 42
4th Jan- Q 45
6th Jan- V25
7th jan- V35
9th Jan- V41
11th Jan-Q44V31
Apart for that I took GMAT Prep1 today and my score was Q48 V40.
I again faced pacing issue and one major reason was my foolish mistake on 1st question. I feel I can do more questions correctly if i dont have the timing pressure.

Goals:
4) What is your overall goal score?
I am one of the older guy and belong to the vast IIM category :shh: . So my target is to get something around 720-730.
5) When are you planning to apply to Business School?
I am planning to get into batch of 2021-22.
6) What Schools are you planning to apply to?
I am targeting for Said Oxford, LBS , Cambridge in UK or IIMs,ISB in India.

And once again , Thank you for the response.

Hi antartican,

Many GMATers spend 3 months (or more) of consistent study time before they hit their 'peak' scores, so if you have studied for just 1.5 months, then that might help to explain the variation in your Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores.

A CAT is really a 'measuring device' - when used correctly, it will give you a realistic score and help define your strengths and weaknesses, but it will NOT help you to fix any of those weaknesses. To raise your scores, you have to learn the necessary Tactics and put in the proper practice and repetitions. In addition, he process of taking (and reviewing) a CAT requires a significant amount of energy and effort - and takes time to 'recover' from. This is one of the reasons why you typically shouldn't take more than 1 CAT per week - and your last CAT should be taken about 1 week before Test Day.

Since you took the GMAT once before - and you have put in some study time already - have you ever taken the 2 free practice CATs (from www.mba.com) before?
