The Official Guide for GMAT Verbal Review 2018

Practice Question
Question No.: SC 202
Page: 255
Recently declassified information from military satellites in orbit thousands of miles above the Earth show the planet continually bombarded by large meteoroids that explode with the power of atomic bomb blasts.

(A) show the planet continually bombarded by
(B) show continual bombarding of the planet by
(C) show a continual bombardment of the planet from
(D) shows continually that the planet is bombarded from
(E) shows that the planet is continually bombarded by

The singular subject "information" should take singular verb, hence options A,B,C are out.
The adverb "continually" modifies the verb bombarded(the planet is continually bombarded); hence the option D conveys incorrect meaning; also "bombarded from" is wrong use of preposition.
The correct answer should be E.
Do correct me if I am wrong.

I have a doubt here -

Original sentence-
'Recently declassified information from military satellites in orbit thousands of miles above the Earth show the planet continually bombarded by large meteoroids that explode with the power of atomic bomb blasts.
'
Isnt its necessary to have "that" after show ?

Experts please suggest ?

If you add 'that' you might need to add 'is' as well.

Recently declassified information from military satellites in orbit thousands of miles above the Earth shows that the planet is continually bombarded by large meteoroids that explode with the power of atomic bomb blasts.

Otherwise as given in the question is fine.

Thanks ng2.

Basically , I was skeptical about my understanding of this question. I solved this one in 31 sec , so I want to check if i have rejected choice D for the Correct reason.

I have rejected A,B,C for S-V error .

D is rejected because i was expecting 'that' just after show .

(E) shows that the planet is continually bombarded by

Option d is rejected because of a logical reason.
try to understand option D. It suggests that it continually shows that the planet is bombarded while the intended meaning of the correct sentence would be to show that the planet is continually bombarded.

The modifier continually should be near to what it modifies.

Hence option D is rejected
Hope it helps.

Solve this using vertical split as we see show and shows
since we have a phrase initially .so it should be singular hence shows is the correct verb here
left with D and E
In D changes the meaning of sentence by placing the continually next to shows
In fact the meaning of sentence is that planet is continually bombarded by .......

E is winner

A - C are wrong because of the wrong verb number

(D) shows continually that the planet is bombarded from --------- adverb "continually" is incorrectly placed, modifying verb "shows".
(E) shows that the planet is continually bombarded by ----------- CORRECT. Here, adverb "continually" is correctly placed, modifying "borbarded".

When dealing with modifiers, try to place the modifier as close as possible to the word it should modify.

Dear Friends,

Here is a detailed explanation to this question-

hazelnut

Recently declassified information from military satellites in orbit thousands of miles above the Earth show the planet continually bombarded by large meteoroids that explode with the power of atomic bomb blasts.

(A) show the planet continually bombarded by
(B) show continual bombarding of the planet by
(C) show a continual bombardment of the planet from
(D) shows continually that the planet is bombarded from
(E) shows that the planet is continually bombarded by

Choice A: This answer choice displays subject-verb disagreement between "information" and "show". Thus, this answer choice is incorrect.

Choice B: This answer choice displays the same subject-verb disagreement seen in Option A. Thus, this answer choice is incorrect.

Choice C: This answer choice displays the same subject-verb disagreement seen in Options A and B. Thus, this answer choice is incorrect.

Choice D: This answer choice suffers from a construction error that leads to an error of meaning; as the adverb "continually" is next to the verb "shows", this answer choice implies that the satellites' showing of the bombardment is continuous rather than that the bombardment is continuous. Thus, this answer choice is incorrect.

Choice E: This answer choice maintains proper subject-verb agreement and preserves the intended meaning of the sentence. Thus, this answer choice is correct.

Hence, E is the best answer choice.

All the best!

The declassified information is singular, which needs shows and shows followed by that. A, B, C, D are out.
The answer is E.

reading choice E and D, we can see that meaning of E is much better.

but we can go deeper.

bombard is puntual action, which happens for a short time. so, "continually"
when accompanied by puntual verb means a repeated action. this is correct.

"show" is a state which exist indefinitely. so, "show" can not go with "continually" because "show" itsefl has the meaning of "continually". so, choice D is wrong
