C. "if" is incorrect
D. same error as B

Between A, C, and E: I am not really sure what should be preferred between A and E .. C looks wrong because "A question is.... if their qualifications are as respected" -- weather suits better here.. if = condition, weather = yes/no answer..

Explanation:

(B) and (D) have ambiguous referent for "they". OUT.
(C) "If" is used to present a condition. "Whether" is used to present an option/choice. Here, "if" is used to present a choice. OUT.
(E) Alters the meaning of the sentence. The intended meaning is that "in evaluating the challenges faced by female politicians, the question.......is paramount".
Here, "in evaluating the challenges faced by female politicians" acts as a modifier for "question" by describing "when" the question is paramount. Here, the subject of the sentence is the "question" which is "paramount" . But, as per choice (E) "an evaluation of the challenges faced by female politicians" is the subject bringing the entire focus of the sentence on "an evaluation" whereas the sentence talks about the "paramount question" during such evaluation. (E) is OUT.

ANSWER A.

I think in D,E we should use "evaluation on" instead of "evaluation of"

(B) The question of whether the female politician’s qualifications are as respected as those of their male counterparts is paramount in evaluating the challenges that they face. - We don't know whom They refers to.

(C) A question that is paramount in evaluating the challenges that female politicians face is if their qualifications are as respected as those of their male counterparts. - too complex

Split 1: if vs whether
Only choice C uses "if". Whether is preferred over if. Hence, C is out.

Split 2: Pronoun
"they" used in choices B and D is ambiguous- it may refer to either female politician's qualifications or male counterparts. Logically, it should refer to female politicians per original sentence. However, female politician is used as a reflexive here. Hence, B and D are out.

Split 3: Modifiers
A uses "evaluating"- after the comma, the subject is question- is question evaluating something? NO. Hence, A is out.

Answer is E- it is clear and meaningful.

A) We have an opening modifier here: "In evaluating.." Who is evaluating? The question? Illogical, out.

B) They lacks a logical referent - female politicians has now changed to "qualifications". The challenges the qualifications face? Illogical

C) It sounds terrible, but keep. Their is somewhat ambiguous, but it is not a strict rule - their can only refer to "female politicians". The other referents are illogical (qualifications and challenges).

D) Same issue as B. The subject is qualifications, and now they refers to that - out.

E) Similar issue to A. The question cannot be "in an evaluation" or doing the evaluation. That modifier is better placed after "paramount", imo.

Final Answer C.

In evaluating the challenges faced by female politicians, the question of whether their qualifications are as respected as those of their male counterparts is paramount.

Complete underline 'SC' question hints at evaluationg various options for structure of the given sentence, besides other errors.

(A) In evaluating the challenges faced by female politicians, the question of whether their qualifications are as respected as those of their male counterparts is paramount.

'verb' form in the beginning is better vis-vis noun form 'evaluation' since the sentence relates to the action..'whether' usage will be preferred over 'if'..correct option

(B) The question of whether the female politician’s qualifications are as respected as those of their male counterparts is paramount in evaluating the challenges that they face.

S-V agreement error

(C) A question that is paramount in evaluating the challenges that female politicians face is if their qualifications are as respected as those of their male counterparts.

'whether' to be preferred over 'if'

(D) The question of whether the female politician’s qualifications are as respected as those of their male counterparts is paramount in an evaluation of the challenges that they face.

S-V agreement error..'verb' form ie, 'in evaluating' vis-vis noun form 'evaluation' is a better option, since the sentence relates to the action..

(E) In an evaluation of the challenges faced by female politicians, the question of whether their qualifications are as respected as those of their male counterparts is paramount.

'verb' form ie, 'in evaluating' vis-vis noun form 'evaluation' is a better option, since the sentence relates to the action..

Hence, (A) is the correct option

In evaluating the challenges faced by female politicians, the question of whether their qualifications are as respected as those of their male counterparts is paramount.

It is unclear what is the main clause of the fully underlined sentence with modifiers. So let's breakdown the sentence in parts and keep the meaning closer to the original sentence and not deviate.

1. There is an evaluation of the challenges faced by female politicians.
2. There is an important(paramount) question in that evaluation.
3. That question => Whether the qualifications of female politicians are respected as = those(qualifications) of their male counterparts

=> In the evaluation, the paramount question is whether the qualifications of female politicians are respected.
Look for, for as...as comparison in the answer choices and there seems no comparison errors. Rule out comparison issues.
So, the problem is the ordering of the modifiers in the sentence.

Notice several of the answer choices uses the 'they' pronoun and it must refer to the female politicians.

(A) In evaluating the challenges faced by female politicians, the question of whether their qualifications are as respected as those of their male counterparts is paramount.
The phrase 'In evaluating' is actually modifying, 'the question'. It seems that the question is evaluating the challenges faced by female politicians. It should, actually, mean: 'In the evaluation of X, the question of Y is paramount'. i.e., inside the evaluation there is an important question. So Eliminate.

(B) The question of whether the female politician’s qualifications are as respected as those of their male counterparts is paramount in evaluating the challenges that they face.
Female politician's means singular. 'They' usage causes pronoun reference error. Eliminate

(C) A question that is paramount in evaluating the challenges that female politicians face is if their qualifications are as respected as those of their male counterparts.
Notice, whether is more suitable than incomplete 'if condition' usage. Also, the intended meaning is changed. 'The important question is evaluating the challenge' differs from the original meaning of the sentence, due to misplacement of the modifiers. Eliminate

(D) The question of whether the female politician’s qualifications are as respected as those of their male counterparts is paramount in an evaluation of the challenges that they face.
Same issue as in option B. Eliminate

(E) In an evaluation of the challenges faced by female politicians, the question of whether their qualifications are as respected as those of their male counterparts is paramount.

So the best answer choice is E.
