Despite the concerns of some social conservatives, the family of today is not at risk, but in fact, looks much like those of earlier generations.

I have a dissenting note to present. Let us take E (OA). It says ---- looks much as it did in the earlier generations.
Is it implying that the same family of today did something in earlier generations? It isn't sounding rational.
2. 'Did' is an action verb. What action did the family life of today do in the earlier generations? Please note that the verb (is) used in the first part (is) is not an action verb but just a linking verb. To match that, the choice must have used another linking verb as in "Despite the concerns of some social conservatives, the family of today is not at risk, but in fact, looks much like those of earlier generations". 'Looks' also is an extent verb and not an action verb (Looks is one of the few verbs' which can act both as a linking verbs and action verb)
3. The confusion about "those". Just because we use life of today singularly does not mean that all the earlier generations had but one family. The is meaningless, because we are talking about ever so many generations of earlier times. In human populations, the generation time typically ranges from 22 to 32 years.(Source Wikipedia). We are comparing the singular with all the earlier ones put together. Therefore, there is no harm in using a plural pronoun for that.
B has idiom problems in that, as much like is wrong. It must say as much as. C is wrong in using action verb 'did". D must be followed by a linking verb. A is the best in the given circumstance. The lightweight treatment of meaning and structure in this is a phenomenal drawback.
