Hey there - I'm prepping right now, too.

I started 3 months ago with a 640 (Q40, V37), and I took my second prep test earlier this month and got a 710 (Q48, V39).

I have been studying quant exclusively with Target Test Prep. I only got through 4 modules during the time, and my Quant score jumped up 8 points!

I'm studying verbal now, and I'm using the Manhattan Prep books (Critical Reasoning, Sentence Correction, and Reading Comp), and I am supplementing the practice with the end of chapter tests in Target Test Prep.

I'll also start going through the OG Questions this week. Goal is to get my V score up to a ~43, and keep my Q score roughly the same.

Hope this helps! There are so many resources out there.

Hi! I am currently aiming to take the GMAT in about 3 months.

I believe my score range right now is around the 500s with a little more strength in Quant over Verbal.

I started the 3-month advanced study plan through Magoosh but am curious if others have suggestions on materials and study plans to follow to get a score of 700+. I am hoping to do this in a cost-effective manner.

The Magoosh study plan is good and I can get the basics down but it doesn't allow for much time for working on my weaknesses as it's a lot of content.

Any tips and guidance would be greatly appreciated!

Hi,
It's good that you started seeking suggestions during your initial stages of preparation. Many students start their preparation using random resources or follow a generic study plan and later realize that they need something more standard and personalized to achieve their dream score. Let me share my insights here.

Ideally, I would require a few more details to suggest you a proper plan. Because I strongly believe that a plan has to be made personalized with respect to the student’s requirements. Because as most of the students are working professionals, a study plan which would require a student who can dedicate 5 hours a day will not be suitable for a student who can dedicate only 3 hours. So, I would need you to answer the following questions.
  • How many hours can you dedicate for studies in a week?
  • Does the resource you use help you in learning the right methodology to solve questions?

The need for a personalized study plan:

If you are a working professional, a generic study plan wouldn’t suffice. You would need something more personalized so that you can strike the right balance between your work life and studies. By personalized, I mean something which takes into account the number of hours you can dedicate in a week and creates a study plan based on that. It should have clear deadlines so that you can focus on finishing those tasks scheduled for the week. This will help you concentrate better.

Answers to these questions will help me guide you in a better way. Having said that, no matter how many hours you dedicate, you need to make sure to follow a few steps while studying.
  • Deal with one topic at a time
  • Learn the concepts of that topic
  • Learn the right methodology to solve questions of the topic (Most important step)
  • Take sectional quizzes of questions of the topic and use the methodology learnt to solve questions
  • Move to next topic only if you get at least easy-medium questions right
  • If the accuracy is less than 60%, identify what’s holding you back, work on them and master the topic
  • Once you move to the next topic, make sure to practice at least 5 questions of the previously finished topics every day.

This will help you learn concepts in an organized way and also help you get hold of topics learnt even when you move to other topics. The above steps are common for every student but I would strongly recommend you to follow a personalized study plan so that it is suitable for you and helps you learn things based on your comfort level.

So, make sure to provide me with the answers for the questions above. You can write back to me here or a better way would be to connect over a call and discuss things quickly. You can schedule a free consultation call using the below link.

3 months plan would unlikely be enough considering 500 range, however, it still depends on your efforts while studying. You are right about the weakness part as half of the work is done if you work on your weak areas.
Practice questions from 500 level to 700 level as you go through the topics and practice till you are not making mistakes while attempting at least 10 questions of similar difficulty.

Ensure you stick to your plan without losing focus. Magoosh is good.

On top of that, you need to do all questions in OG2021 or older versions. They are the best and most reliable resource.
