Hi everyone,
I got a score of 450 in GMAT Online and i'm really disheartened as I was aspiring for 650+ at least
Do you think will it be possible for me to receive my desired score?
I was planning to apply in schools for Fall 2021 so will it be possible since we're in September 2020 now?
How many hours did you study so far before the exam?
Can you share your mock score (official mock)?
Which one is your weakest and strongest area in GMAT?

I’m new to this app so I’m having a bit difficulty in replying individually so I’m gonna reply both questions here

Score breakup was -:
Verbal 24
Quant 31
IR 3
(No AWA section because it was GMAT Online)

I studied approx 5-6 hours everyday for 3 months approx and didn’t give the official mock test because i was under time constraints due to parental pressure and didn’t get time to give that
Although i gave a few mock tests online which i received from the coaching center where i was enrolled
I don’t have the exact breakup for those exams but i got approx 500 in those mock tests.

Weakest area i might say can be quant because I run out of time so I’m attempting last 3-4 questions in under 30 seconds so I don’t even get time to read the last few question
In verbal i might say my weakest area is sentence correction but i also get distracted sometime while reading the RC

As i write this I feel like I should give up on GMAT and find something else to do?

Hi Vishal1327,

Sorry to hear about how things went with your GMAT. But don't be discouraged. An improvement is always possible. In my journey, I have helped many students improve their score by more than 100 points. All you need to do is to focus on the right parameters and have a proper study plan. Let me share my insights here.

The ideal way to prepare for GMAT is
  • Learn the concepts
  • Learn the methodology
  • Take sectional quizzes for individual topic
  • Make sure to move to the next topic only if you get 60% accuracy
  • Work on the weaker areas
  • Once you are done with the topics, start taking mocks
  • If you consistently get your desired score in mocks, then you are good to take the test

In the above plan learning the methodology and working on the weaker areas are the most important steps. Most students fails to do that and eventually fail to score well on GMAT. There is a misconception among students that practicing 'N' number of questions will fetch results. But that is not entirely true. As GMAT is a test of application of concepts, it is really important to learn the right methodology to solve questions.

Having said that, to suggest you a proper plan, I would need you to answer a few questions.
  • Did you take any mocks before taking the official test?
  • Most importantly, did you follow any approach while solving questions?
  • If yes, did the approach change with every test?
  • How many hours can you dedicate for studies?

Answer to these questions will help me guide you in a better way. You can always write back to me here or a better way would be to discuss the same over a call. This way we can quickly narrow down things and make a proper study plan. The call is absolutely free and worth it. So, if you are interested, you can schedule a free consultation call using the below link.

Hi GMATWhizTeam
1. Yes i gave a few mock tests from the center where i was enrolled for gmat preparation
I was scoring around 500 in those tests but i used to think that my actual score would be higher than that as i was skipping the AWA sections in those mock tests

2. Just some basic approaches like comma subject rule, check one word before the comma etc. Not too detailed approaches i must say

3. Usually not

4. I can give upto 4-5 hours at least everyday

Thank you everyone who replied and tried to help me out, i am really obliged to each and everyone of you.

Hi Vishal1327,

  • GMAT score doesn't depend on AWA and IR. Only the quant and verbal sections decide the score.
  • By the approach, I mean the methodology. To give you an example, to solve SC questions you need to approach them from a meaning stand-point. There is a misconception that knowing grammatical rules will help solve SC questions, but that isn't the case. You will often come across answer choices which are grammatically correct and also convey a logical meaning but are indeed incorrect. So, it is really important to understand the intended meaning the original sentence is trying to convey and eliminate answer choices which are either grammatically incorrect or which do not convey the intended meaning. The following video helps you understand the gist of the approach.

How should you plan your studies?

I understood that you are not focusing on the right parameters. It is really important to understand the concepts and learn the right methodology to solve questions. As GMAT is a test of application of concepts, it is really important to use the right strategies. And 4-5 hours a day is a good amount of time to work on your weaknesses and improve your skills. I can definitely help you improve your score but I think a more one-to-one interaction would be helpful. Why don't you go ahead and schedule a free consultation call so that we can quickly sort things out and make a proper study plan? To give you an introduction, I am GMAT Strategy Consultant and I have helped many students improve their score by more than 100 points. Here's the success story of one our students who improved her score by 130 points and scored a 690 in 40 days.

If you wish to have an one-on-one interaction regarding the study strategy and how to improve your score, you can schedule a free consultation call using the below link.
