I am a current 2nd year medical student looking to get my MBA in between my 3rd and 4th year. I have an undergraduate finance degree from a decent state business school (Eller) with a minor in biochemistry and I attend a state medical school. My undergrad GPA was a 3.8 and I worked in a healthcare setting for 1 year before starting med school. I took the GMAT this summer and got a 740 (47Q, 46V) with a 5 AWA and an 8 IR. While I was extremely happy with my overall performance, my Q score is way to low for my liking. My question is given my score and profile am I competitive for the top 1 year MBA programs? Some names I'm looking at specifically are Cornell and NW which I have heard are friendly to medical school applicants.

If it's a matter of investing that time in your applications versus trying to increase your quant score I think your investment would be better in the applications. If you have to attend next year, which it sounds like you do. If you have a history of good grades in math related subjects then you're fine, you can do math and they will know that. I imagine that if you have a minor in Biochemistry, that applies to you. Your score is otherwise very strong. If you are otherwise positioned to apply in round one I would recommend that, if you plan to apply in round 2 and it's either study for the GMAT or play video games I think I would vote for the first. But I imagine you have your hands full with medical school.

I think your school feels fine for your goals. Unless you have a bunch of red flags in your profile spend the time getting the rest of your application together. Your story will be super important applying from medical school so really think through how you frame and strategize your application
