What number is 108 more than two-thirds of itself?

A. 72
B. 144
C. 162
D. 216
E. 324

We can let the number = n and create the following equation:

108 + (2/3)n = n

Multiplying the entire equation by 3, we have:

324 + 2n = 3n

324 = n

Answer: E

Answer:
108 + (2/3) x = x
implies (1/3)x = 108, hence x = 324

Think of it this way. If the number is 108 more than 2/3rd of itself that means 108 is 1/3 of the number and the number is 3 times 108 which is 324.

Hence E.

ScottTargetTestPrep or GMATPrepNow,

This may be a weird question, but can you please tell me how you know that the word "itself" in the question refers to "x" that we are solving for, not to 108? At the beginning, the equation I formed is "x = 108 + 2/3(108)" and that gave me 180, which thankfully was not one of the answer choices. After this, I immediately changed the second 108 to x.

Thanks
Yazed

What number is 108 more than two-thirds of itself?

Break it down.

What number = x
is = "="
108 = 108
More = +
two-third of itself = 2/3 of x.

the two third of itself cannot be 108 then you would have just said 108.

that means 108 is 1/3 of the number, hence 108 multiply by three. So we have 324
