I started this thread a few weeks ago and given your stated concern about relative positioning in the rankings for Ross and Fuqua, I thought I'd share the longer view with you.

The tl;dr version ... over the last ten years, Ross has been (in average) very slightly high ranked than Fuqua ... and ... Fuqua has seen their average ranking drop approximately 1.7 slots vs where they were (on average) 11-20 years ago ... and ... over the last 20 years, the standard deviation of ranks has been much greater with Fuqua than Ross.

...............

Since Fuqua and Ross are so close in your mind, I'd consider calling the admissions office at Fuqua and Ross, explaining your situation, and asking if they'd be able to help make up your mind with scholarship money.

Personally, I'd probably pick Ross ... unless you knew you wanted to LIVE in NC post graduation (NC is beautiful). I've never lived in MI, but I know the winters can be brutal.

Fuqua and Ross rankings are negligible in this case as they are very much peer schools...at least in my opinion.

Honestly, not much of a wrong choice between the two. I would concur, if either would sweeten the pot with more scholarship money, then I would likely go that route.

I agree the differences today are slight, however the OP commented Ross was losing steam and was falling ... hence my post.

IMO, the best financial aid package wins between Ross and Fuqua.

Congrats on all those admits! Also, I have to commend and acknowledge the decisions you made in your career. Not only is your story compelling to admissions, but you've also found an incredible passion that you want to pursue. Those admits and scholarship money is just a reflection on the amazing work you've done and path you're leading. If you've read my comments on other posts and posts on profile reviews, I'm incredibly adamant about finding a passion, becoming well rounded, and differentiating yourself as an applicant. You've done all 3 on top of having great stats. Kudos!

Now to your tough decision. The academics could be a wash at all 3 programs with some nuances as you mentioned. The best way to be an entrepreneur is to do and not just by learning and discussing in class. Ross is super action-based with all our resources (ZLI, MAP, all the business challenges and competitions, etc.). The other schools could have similar things, besides MAP. The differentiator here would be quality of students to learn from, which narrows it down to Ross or Fuqua.

Your point about Ross falling in the rankings in past years is a valid observation, but it's without context since that's only a 3-year view. Ross being #7 in 2018 was quite an inflation of our ranking in general. Are we as good as Haas and better than Columbia/Dartmouth? Answer is no. Those schools had and have way better recruiting into MBB/consulting, Tech as PM and PMM, Banking, and general management for Fortune 500. Fuqua was always Ross's peer, not Haas, CBS or Tuck. So don't look at it as Ross dropping in rankings. We're just settling back to where we should be, which is borderline Top 10, but staple at 10-12.

The Ross and Fuqua MBA alumni networks are both great as they're all super welcoming and helpful. Now, it's just a matter of the reach of that network, which essentially takes me to the points I made in the other post you read. For me, it's the general university brand and the reach of that network. Michigan to me wins out. Every city you go in the US, there are flocks of Michigan alumni. You can find someone who was UMich at almost every big company. Our networking events are pretty frequent, whether for regular professional networking or bars hosting football/basketball game watches for that informal relationship-building. Michigan is a global brand with the pure numbers everywhere. Duke has the global brand to a somewhat similar extent, but without the volume. In additional to the sheer volume, the Michigan BBAs usually go on to M7 schools if they pursue an MBA or the Engineers are already at all the tech companies and startups, so that's the multiplier effect of that volume by being associated to the Michigan network. Since the quality is similar or viewed the same, then you obviously want more of a great thing. For those reasons, I'd go Ross.

To give you some extra detail even though I didn't have the same situation as you. I was waitlisted to the bitter end with Fuqua in 2017. While I was waiting for admit, I was honestly questioning whether I should re-apply the following year for Ross because of that insane network or get into a Top 10 school because of my improved GMAT score. I knew I'd regret not going to Ross if I went to Fuqua because I wouldn't have that massive alumni network. If I went to Ross and not Fuqua, I wouldn't have that same regret, which was true during the 2 years. But that's just me based on my preferences and what I value.

Congratulations on your admits!

I will be up front in that I am matriculating in Fuqua's Master of Science in Quantitative Management: Business Analytics program.

Duke Fuqua has been such an awesome community. Since updating my LinkedIn, I have connected with MBA, MQM, alumni, etc. and they have been so welcoming and inclusive. Dr. Petranka has been awesome as well in reaching out.

Tough place to be between Fuqua and Ross, but I lean towards Fuqua!

Thank you for your response mate.
I absolutely agree. Ever since my admission, I have been in touch with multiple current students and alums alike. Fuqua really feels like a family.
I have had a lot of time to connect with all these people though, which kinda makes my observation not very objective.
But I can definitely say that the "Team Fuqua" factor is real and I have genuinely felt it.

The only issue is, the network of Ross is just as tight knit.
Which is why the decision is so difficult.

Wow that was an incredibly researched post! Thank you so much for sharing that.
Have been going over that and your predictions for the past hour. Incredible effort!
If this was reddit, I'd have definitely given you a gold :D

I have already checked with Ross and they have refused for a reconsideration.
Duke has asked me to write an essay and list all the other offers that I am considering, but they will take about 3 weeks to answer.
I am still putting in the effort! Since I have already paid my deposit, I have nothing to lose.
But for all purposes, I have to assume that there won't be a meaningful difference in the amount of money that I'd need to expend!

I have a few friends in NC. I haven't been there personally, but just hearing about their experiences, witnessing the place virtually has had me really interested.
Though, I honestly have no strong preference, as I don't really intend to stay in the US for long. This I believe is the only thing I am not very certain about. I know what I want to do, I know how I wanna do it, but I don't know where lmao

Hi again bigge2win!
Thanks for sharing your views.

Thank you so much! I honestly believe that much of the credit of this clarity goes to the application process itself. The kind of essays these schools expect from us, they just force you to really dig deep inside and figure out what you really want to do. I sort of figured out, broadly, what I wanted to do in the future, but I can only paint a clearer picture now because of the colors that I discovered during the whole application process!
But yeah, I definitely agree with you. I think having this clarity really helped me a lot with admissions and I can say with surety and certainty that I'd not have fared as well in this season had I not thought deeply about this.
I would also give massive credits to the GC community here. All the posts I read about crafting better applications had the element of having a clear goal in place!

Yeah you're right. I think it is not fair to only consider the past 3 years worth of rankings when comparing schools. But when I started my research, I only looked at past 5yr trends. So probably my opinions are a bit skewed when it comes to rankings.
Anyway, I don't focus a lot on rankings tbh. They gave me a great platform to do my own research, but I didn't fall in love with Ross and Fuqua because of their rankings. I absolutely loved what these schools stand for, the culture they have and the qualities they want their students to have and nurture!
Also employment statistics :p

I have read on the Forums that while UofM has great numbers, there isn't that big of a connect between peers across schools. So Engineering students might not be too excited to connect with Ross grads and undergrads and the like. How has your experience been in this aspect?
For Duke, however, I have personally seen people from Pratt institute mingle well with Fuquans! But again, too small a sample size to have any sort of a meaningful conclusion.

Oh great! I was waitlisted at both Fuqua and Ross a few months ago. Was able to convert both (primarily due to some incredible projects I was lucky enough to acquire in Jan I suppose), so I definitely feel you there.
I wish I could have visited both schools. Would have made the decision much easier.

Also, both schools have similar stance for deferrals too (which is another question that I have. Defer or go this year, but that is not the primary concern right now).

I have connected with people who are going into, are in or alums of Pratt, Sanford, Nicholas, etc. The entire university seems to really foster collaboration and diversity. I cannot speak to UMich so I do hope others chime in.

Oh that's awesome mate!
Many of the current admits to the daytime program are dual degree applicants or alums of other Duke schools. So I also have had the privilege to connect with a few people from other schools.
But knowing that you too had similar experience definitely helps a lot mate!
Thank you for sharing that.

My thoughts about the other UMich programs and the rest of the university was more around the interactions in the real world as alumni, not while you're in school. We do have our classes, competitions, integrated programs, dual degree students cross-pollinating, etc. but it obviously has its improvement areas. Someone else could speak to the academic integration A LOT better than I could since I didn't leverage much of those resources.

But that's more related to academics than it is about the power of the alumni network after graduation. Honestly, if the roles were reversed where Duke has the same characteristics and alumni volume as Michigan rather than UMich being that way, my choice would've been Fuqua. I want the school that aligns best with my philosophy and approach.

Oh right, got it. In the interactions I had with the current students, they said that interactions between the undergrad students and grad students were plentiful. Apart from that, many from the Engineering courses regularly interact with Ross students, especially those interested in entrepreneurship. But I couldn't quite talk at length about this at the time as I had other questions that held more importance then.

Right, got it!

Congratulations! Those are fantastic admits. Ross and Fuqua are great choices for marketing and I think you will have access to main marketing employers in both schools. Ann Arbor will attract more CPG companies (Chicago) and Fuqua would give you similar access too.

One thing that I like to ask people when they select schools - what is your plan B?

Plan A often does not work out and it is important to think of a reasonable plan B to make sure you are hedging your odds. You mentioned entrepreneurship, but I am not sure if that is an immediate plan B or a more long term thought. If your plan B is consulting, Ross and Fuqua will give you decent access to top consulting firms but if you want to do tech (or marketing in tech - recently PMM roles in tech overshadow traditional CPG roles in terms of money and prestige), Ross would have the edge.

What do you think?

Let me know, and I will be around to answer questions!

Hi souvik101990 Thank you!
I am actually not supremely interested in CPG, also from what I hear, CPG is difficult for international students. Marketing in tech is like my primary goal or plan A to be honest. I would love to work in a marketing function at a tech based eries B+ startup (although I recognize that it might not be the best plan of Action in the current market scenario), or at a big tech firm that promotes innovation or intrapreneurship (although from what I have gathered, most of the big tech firms have such wings now a days, so I recognize that my list isn't targeted here).

As for plan B, I am actually okay with 2:-
1. A consulting based job at a consultancy that has a start-up wing (like AT Kearney or LEK) - in some regards, this job might actually help me get more in touch with the problems start-ups face and the kind of solutions that might work for them. I don't think I'll get the sort of interactions I am after in such a job though.

2. A general management job at a tech based firm that fosters innovation (though I don't know how different this can be considered from my primary goal).

Regarding the startup wing at consulting firms, I'm not too familiar with these, but it wouldn't be easy to attain if you didn't get aligned to it by luck or relationships from the get-go. So I wouldn't bank on that. Getting a consulting offer and having clients in the right industries with the right projects should be your goal with consulting.

I will advise that although Tech PMM is your plan A and Consulting is your Plan B, the recruiting timelines for each is "backwards." Consulting comes first and then tech usually after, unless if it's on-campus Big Tech, like Amazon, Microsoft, Dell, Cisco, etc. Google always does something weird at different schools where they don't interview candidates until the second half of the year when everyone already committed to an offer, and then brings people in for interviews and gives you an offer where you're in a weird situation that you need to renege on your previous offer acceptance (or chose to decline that offer and be unemployed in hopes of landing Google). But yeah, you should go in recruiting consulting first, as weird as it is to need to do your hedge first.

Also, regarding your point about startups being risky because of the economy, I'd say that's false, which should give you more "hope" if that helps. Just like every industry, there are certain business models and products that are more cyclical than others. Right now, I'd rather work at a Series B/C/D/pre-IPO company (for example, Udemy, Asana, Segment, Confluent) with a sticky product, a burn rate that'll last 1.5-2 years, and strong financials with top notch investors backing them rather than some of the big Tech players like Airbnb, Uber, Intuit, etc. who are laying off and cutting pay. Before bschool, you should definitely network with companies even without MBA alums to learn more. When you're in the program, joining one of the venture funds will give you experience in how to evaluate startups as an investor so you know what to look for and know who's good. I didn't do those funds, but kinda picked it up in classes and now in the industry. Definitely happy to chat more about startups/tech since I've been in it for a couple years now.

Oh, thank you for the information. I don't know much about the recruitment process for consulting to be honest. I remember reading somewhere that just like your Why this school? answer, Why this company? answer also matters a lot. I was hoping I could present my fit for a firm using my prior experiences of actually providing some watered down consulting services to a few start-ups.
But thank you for this, I will look more into it!

Very helpful tip again! In my interactions with current students who recruited for both Tech and Consulting, I have heard similar experiences (not the Google one though. That is really something new)
I have heard of stories where people who were primarily interested in Tech before recruitment, landed an internship in some big consulting firms and then decided to change their plans altogether. I guess the recruitment timelines might have something to do with this.
Also, can you really go back on an offer if you land a better one later in the cycle? Not going on to the ethical side of the move, but do people really do that?

That's very interesting. I was told by a Tepper student that start-ups might not be as friendly to international candidates now. Perhaps it was more because of the political environment?
Yeah one current student at Ross also told me about Wolverine and Zell venture funds and encouraged me to explore them if I do get selected. Zell is unique in the sense that it offers a chance to invest in real life projects and ventures of Michigan students. Really looking forward to leverage these resources.

That is awesome! A conversation like that would help me more than I can express!
I will definitely shoot you a PM regarding this. Thank you so much for doing this! Really grateful!

OP, if you have any questions, let me know. Probably the most influential person for me when deciding on a school was the President and CEO of USPA Global Licensing, Inc. who is an East Central University (my undergrad) and a Duke MBA grad.

Duke definitely has incredible alums. Tim Cook generally gets most of the limelight, as he should, but there are a lot more incredible people!

Would you mind if I PMed you a few questions in a few hours?
Would love to know more about your experience at Duke!
