What is the value of the odd three-digit integer y?

(1) The sum of the three digits of y is 4

(2) The three-digit integer y is greater than 150

Official solution from Veritas Prep.

Statement 1: The following are possible digit combinations that add up to 4:

4 + 0 + 0

1 + 1 + 2

2 + 2 + 0

3 + 1 + 0

Since y is a three digit odd integer, y could be:

211

121

103

301

Statement 1 is therefore insufficient.

Statement 2: There are many possible odd three digit integers greater than 150 – 151, 153 etc. so Statement 2 is insufficient.

Together: Combining the two statements, there are two possible integers greater than 150 whose digits add up to 4:

211 and 301

Since the information allows for two possible answers, the information is insufficient, making the answer E.
