in addition to the correct usage of either... or, which is correct in E there is a problem with "accompanied either" and "either accompanied"

the correct needs to be "accompanied either" because the meaning is that it is the increase that is accompanied by either increase in X or increase in Y. whereas, "it is either accompanied by X or not accompanied"... which essentially shows the incorrect usage of "either" by stressing the verb and not the noun "increase" Based on this C and D are out

A and B are not || since they don't use "by": accompanied either by X or by Y... B is also wordy "if it is enclosed in the container..." What is enclosed the pressure or the temperature of gas?

my choice is E

Will go with E. Places ‘either’ closer to the action.
Also maintains ||ism.

Definitely E.

Should be accompanied either not either accompanied as in C and D.

An increase in the temperature of a gas is accompanied either by an increase in pressure if the gas is enclosed in a container or by an increase in volume if the gas is able to expand.

Strong ll in E is corerct.

Answer – E
It is unclear whether ‘it’ modifies temperature or gas. However, it looks as if 'it' modifies temperature as author has specifically used word gas in next line. But reference of 'it' to the temperature creates a meaning error = temperature is accompanied by an increase. Logically, increase in temperature shall be accompanied by increase in pressure.
There is a parallelism error – either acoompanied by .... or ..... (correct version = either accompanied by ... or accompanied by....). Hence, A is wrong.
B – B retains the meaning error.
C – Though C corrects the meaning error, it retains the parallelism error.
D – makes parallelism error – either .... or by ....
E – correct choice

A. When the temperature of a gas in increased, it is either accompanied by an increase in pressure if the gas in enclosed in a container, or - parallelism issue - "either X or Y" ; pronoun "it" is ambiguous - does "it" refer to the temperature or the gas

B. When the temperature of a gas in increased, it is accompanied either by an increase in pressure if it is enclosed in a container or - same as A

C. When the temperature of a gas in increased, the increase is either accompanied by an increase in pressure if the gas is enclosed in a container or by - parallelism issue -- the second part after or does not have a verb

D. Any increase in the temperature of a gas is either accompanied by an increase in pressure if it is enclosed in a container, or by - parallelism issue - "either X or Y"

E. An increase in the temperature of a gas is accompanied either by an increase in pressure if the gas is enclosed in a container or by - Correct

Hello Arthurito,

We hope this finds you well.

To provide a bit of clarity here, the issue here is parallelism; in the "either A or B" construction, A and B must be parallel.

Thus, if "accompanied" is after "either", there must be an appropriate verb after "or", and if "accompanied" is before "either", there should be no verb after "or".

We hope this helps.
All the best!
