Hi dieogocml,

I suggest that you review the foundations of math again. If the book from MGMAT is too difficult to understand, you should look for other sources such as the official guide.

You said that you study about 2 - 3 hours a day. I believe that you will cover all of the content within a month.

If you fully understand the core concept, your quant score will greatly improve.

Hi diegocml,

Since you've now faced the Official GMAT, you should be able to use that experience to your advantage. There's still some question as to why your Quant Scaled Score dropped so much though. You've defined some aspects to Test Day that you don't think impacted your performance, but clearly something hurt your performance (or several things). Returning late from the first break would be upsetting to most Test Takers, so that might have played a bigger role than you think it did. Having to rush through the last 10 questions also likely significantly impacted your score. There are almost certainly other factors to consider too, but you have to really think hard to define them. Without that knowledge, you run the risk of having those same problems happen again.

GMAT assassins aren't born, they're made,

Have you studied without a class successfully for a standardized exam before? Some people are not built for studying on their own. With the amount of time you have spent on unsuccessfully studying on your own, perhaps you should get a tutor to explain the concepts in a way that is comprehensible to you.

Hi Aves,

Thank you for the reply.

I do study for a minimum 2-hours per day. However, that's not 2 hours straight reading. The exercise and note taking take most of my time.

Are you saying it's possible to learn content from the OG? I thought that was only recommended for practicing.

Cheers,
Diego

Hi HiLine,

I have studied for the TOEFL on my own and got a 100+ score.

I do understand the concepts, but the problems appear when I'm actually doing the exercises.

It is precisely because you don't know how to apply the concepts to individual questions that you should get in-person, live help.

What's your background in English and Math?

What's your background in English and Math?

English is my second language. Despite having had problems with math all my life, I enjoy learning it. Math is for sure the most challenging aspect of the GMAT for me.

I figured English is your second language, but how much experience living in an English speaking country do you have? And again, how is your background in Math? Specifically, how many years of Math have you taken, what is the highest level Math class you have taken, and which aspects of Math are you most comfortable with?

Hi HILine,

I've leaved in an English speaking country for over a year and a half, and I've been working in an English speaking environment for the past 5 years, so I don't think English is a problem for me. I do have to learn the ins and outs of SC, CR and RC, though.

As for Quant, the highest math class I've taken was Statistics in University. I don't think I have taken anything higher than that. Perhaps calculus, but I don't remember a thing from those 2 classes.

Honesty, I don't know what to answer to "which aspects of Math are you most comfortable with?". I'm not a math guy, but I like it, and I do work with numbers (accounting), but I don't have to crush them. Well, at least not with my mind (Damn it calculators and MS Excel!).

You are in the exact same situation as I am.
Mediocre verbal score and terrible math score. (no offense. This applies to me as well like I said)

I think you are right that it should be relatively easy for you (and hopefully for me too) to pick up a few more points in verbal, but the big problem remains: MATH!

I started with Manhattan's "Foundation of Math" which I think is an excellent book for people like us. If you haven't looked at it already: it's easy to understand, starts with the basics and has a lot of practice drills. I really recommend getting it.

In fact, the first time I studied for the GMAT (3 years ago) I only used Foundations of Math, the OG and quant. and verbal review books.
But one can only learn so much with these books. I don't think the OG is very good for teaching yourself. It's important to practice these problems yes, but the explanations are very often not very good in the OG.

Math is my Achilles heel as well and I decided to hire a tutor now. If that doesn't work then I think I am just a hopeless case. :|

Good luck to you.

Hi Silviax,

Thanks for your suggestions. As a matter of fact, I started my preparation with the MGMAT Foundations of Math and my score went up from Q22 to Q27, then to Q18 on the real GMAT. That's really a great book. It showed me I'm not a complete loser at math!

I've been following the TTP program and I am putting all my hopes in it. I'm doing all I can to get my foundations right this time, even if it takes a long while. It's been pretty much like baby steps.

Good luck to you, too!

Here is what I need you to do in order to provide helpful advice:

1. Obtain an enhanced score report from your official GMAT and report your percentile for each of the subsections.

2. Review your latest GMATPrep practice exam and report what percentage of questions in each subsection you got right.

GMAT Total Score: 410 - 13th

AWA: 5 - 59th

IR: 8 - 92nd (Answered 78% of questions right)

Verbal: 27 - 46th
CR: 44th
RC: 40th
SC: 50th

Quant: 18 - 6th
PS: 5th
DS: 11th
Arithmetic: 5th
Algebra/Geometry: 13th

2. Review your latest GMATPrep practice exam and report what percentage of questions in each subsection you got right

I'll get back to you as soon as I have it.

Thanks.
