that and which - I dont think is applicable here, which makes BDE out. Between A and D , A is right becasue "is produced by the exposure.."

I see nothing wrong in the original sentence. So I go for A.

E just rewrites the same sentence with a couple of "which"s thrown in to confuse us.

"Produces" is wrong in the other choices.

A.
Verdigris..., is produced, like iron rust,...by the exposure [ produces will be wrong]
Which in choice E is not only used incorrectly, it also makes the sentence wordy.

E cannot be the choice here 'cos when "which is visible on many copper items, and which is produced" is removed from the original sentence the meaning changes.

Also relative pronoun should introduce a clause . So E ruled out.

what is the effect of the sentence below:

Aerugo,...is the green "bloom" visible on many copper items and is produced...by the exposure of the metal to the oxygen in the atmosphere.
I think it is like saying: "Aerugo is X and is produced by..." The COMMA is removed.
As compare to: "Aerugo is X, and is produced by..." Do we need the COMMA for the same subject?

Both verbs ("is" and "and is") refer to Aerugo - the subject.

Clearly A is the right answer.

none of the other choices maintain parallelism: Aerugo is visible and is produced

a) visible on many copper items, and is produced
b) that is visible on many copper items, and which produces - This is visible is not parallel to which produces
c) visible on many copper items, and produces - visible is not parallel to produces
d) that is visible on many copper items, and that produces - Changes the meaning of the sentence.
e) which is visible on many copper items, and which is produced - which without a comma before it usually incorrect on GMAT.

See if you can validate your choice with a reason

Only options that use the parallelism correctly are A and D. But once you remove the non-blue portion, you will realize that A maintains parallelism and thus is our answer.

What's wrong with E?

Green bloom is visible and green bloom is produced by....So I think which in E is correct.

Aerugo is just a term for green bloom. Am I wrong?

Thanks

The first thing to note here is meaning. Is Aerugo produced like iron rust or does it produce iron rust? The original statement makes it clear that it is the former. For this reason, B,C, and D are out straight away.

Between A and E, reject E because it very subtly changes the meaning of the original sentence. The original sentence says 'Aerugo is the green bloom visible on many copper items.....'. Here the usage of 'visible' amounts to saying that Aerugo can be seen on many copper items. However, in option E the usage is 'Aerugo is the green bloom which is visible on many copper items....'. Here the usage of 'visible' amounts to saying that Aerugo cannot be missed on many copper items, which is a subtly different inference.

Based on this A is the answer.

Aerugo, also known as verdigris, is the green "bloom" visible on many copper items, and is produced, like iron rust, over the course of time by the exposure of the metal to the oxygen in the atmosphere.
(A)visible on many copper items, and is produced
(B)that is visible on many copper items, and which produces
(C)visible on many copper items, and produces
(D)that is visible on many copper items, and that produces
(E)which is visible on many copper items, and which is produced

Chop the unnecessary clauses:

Aerugo, also known as verdigris, is the green "bloom" visible on many copper items, and is produced, like iron rust, over the course of time by the exposure of the metal to the oxygen in the atmosphere.

Aerugo is the green "bloom" visible on many copper items, and is produced over the course of time by the exposure of the metal to the oxygen in the atmosphere.

Clauses like B, D, and E will change meaning.
C is not parallel.
A is best option.

Aerugo, also known as verdigris, is the green "bloom" visible on many copper items, and is produced, like iron rust, over the course of time by the exposure of the metal to the oxygen in the atmosphere.

Because of "by" ==> Passive voice must be used ==> narrow down to A & E.

E is wrong because the structure "Aeguro...... is the green "bloom" which is visible................, and which is produced............." is wrong.

A is correct.

Well this was tricky for me. It took over 2 minutes. I think all the 5 options starts correctly. It is the end that differentiate the correct answer.
produces is incorrect pre-cursor to like iron rust. This eliminates B,C and D.Between A and E, i think E is incorrect. which refers to what ? Copper items -> incorrect. Which is always refers to the noun before it. Hence A wins.

I chose E instead of A.

Searching for explanations, it seems that which should always be directly preceded by a comma.
Which is usually used with a non-essential modifier for the GMAT.

Are these claims correct?

The use of (,and) implies one of the two things: Either there is a list or two Independent clauses.

Could anyone please clarify what role is being played by (,and) here?
