Profile:
Age: 32
Marital status: Married with no children
Gender: Male
Nationality: Brazilian
Languages: Portuguese – Native; English – Fluent; German – Basic; Spanish - Basic

Education:
BS in Industrial Engineering in Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro - UFRJ. My course was recently ranked by the local media the number 1 program in industrial engineering in Brazil.

GPA: 7.8. This grade puts me in the top 20% of engineering students in my university. What would be the equivalent GPA for my grade?

GMAT: 690 Q48, V36, IR8, AWA 5
I will retake the GMAT this February, and I am confident I will improve my score, because I had a terrible night on the day prior to the test. However, I scored a 710 and a 730 on the simulated tests.

I am a CFA charter holder and passed all three levels on the first try.

I also have international experience (01 year). I took my senior year of High School in Aurora, CO, as an exchange student.

Work Experience - Finance background
07 years of experience in finance + 03 years as an intern (30 hours a week for the 03 full years). Total 10 years.
(It is very common for Brazilian engineers to work in the Financial Market)

Partner and Head of department at a local Hedge Fund firm (Jan 2012 - Present).
Trained and managed a team of 4. Company with total of 15 employees, including backoffice.

Local Bank, private local capital, with approximately 100 employees (Aug 2005 - Dec 2011)
Initial position - Trading desk intern
Got 04 promotions
Final position - Equity Manager (Managed 3 people).
I had great work experience, including managing the equity portfolio of my bank during the financial crisis of 2008.

Local Bank, private foreign capital, with approximately 100 employees (Aug 2004 - Aug 2005)
Market Risk Intern

Local Manufacturer with approximately 50 employees (Dec 2002 - Dec 2003)
Production Planning and Control Intern

Extracurricular:
I played several sports, such as soccer, lacrosse, volleyball and basketball, during different periods of my life, including High School. I played only in non-professional teams.

Organized for 4 straight years (8th - 11th grade) the Annual Theatrical Play. I also acted on 2 of the 4 years. It was a competition promoted by my school in Brazil in which different classes competed against each other for the best play. Our team won on the 8th grade and was runner-up on the 11th grade.

In the US I did volunteer work with Denver Children’s Hospital. I also did volunteering in Brazil, supplying food for homeless people.

Goal:
Senior position in Finance/Investment Banking in the USA.
I have little interest in coming back to Brazil, at least in the near future.

Schools:
I decided to apply for MBA programs after the presidential election in Nov/2014. Since then, I have studied and already taken the GMAT and TOEFL (no grade yet, I believe it will be around 110) in Jan/2015. I will also retake the GMAT in Feb/2015 because I am very confident I will improve my score to at least 710.

As I started my process late, my only alternative will be the 3rd round. I have no interest on delaying my application another year.

Considering my profile, a GMAT of 710 and 3rd round application, I would like to know my real chances of getting in one of the following programs:

Harvard and Stanford (I believe my chances are low here..)
Wharton
Kellogg
Chicago Booth
Columbia
UCLA
Darden
Fuqua

At first, I need to short this list and that is why I am sending this post.

Questions:
Which schools do you believe that would fit my goal and what are the real chances of approval for each one? Would you recommend applying to any other US B-school not listed above?

I was wondering how the selection process works. Am I competing with all prospective students, with all international applicants, with the Latin America applicants or just with the Brazilian ones?

Hi, there. You are asking about chances; in general, third round is quite difficult - the majority of places have been filled. Of the schools you mentioned, UCLA would be the safety school; then Darden and then Fuqua. HBS and Stanford the most challenging, and the others in the middle. Chicago might be a bit easier than the other 'middle' ones, and it's well aligned with your goals. Columbia and Wharton are also well known for finance. Another school you should consider is NYU - easier to get into than the middle schools you've listed, and top 10 for finance. Regarding your competition, you are up against either Brazilians or Latin Americans, but not all international or prospective students. Another option, considering your age (you are a bit old for regular MBA programs in the US), is INSEAD. They tend to accept older candidates, are well known for Finance, AND you can apply 1st round January term - starting next January instead of September.

Hi, I'd say that 3rd round, at your age, the chances are low for most of the schools. You HAVE a chance, and should definitely apply, but with realistic expectations. I'd say moderate chances at Fuqua, with the highest chances at UCLA and Darden.

Profile:
- Caucasian male / American citizen
- 710 GMAT; 3.6 GPA from public big 10 university
- 3 years of experience in investment banking including 1 year spent abroad at satellite office in London, UK
- Employer sponsorship for MBA program - offer to come back as an associate upon graduation
- Volunteer experience tutoring at local schools

While your GMAT is an acceptable score and falls well within the average margins for all schools you are targeting (exceeding the averages in both Ross and Booth), you may want to consider retaking it - if you feel you can do better - simply because an impressive score may likely compensate for your weak GPA (which, as you know, falls below the average those schools generally accept). An explanation for your GPA may help, but a strong GMAT score will prove to the admissions committee that you do have what it takes to succeed academically.
Your work experience is good! You’ll want to stress the leadership roles you played as well as the initiatives you pioneered.
As you probably already know, the admissions offices are looking for anything that sets you apart from other applicants (unique talents and skills, interesting experiences and backgrounds) so it is important to make your application distinct. Hi,

I would love to get your perspective on where I stand.

-27 y/o Indian Male (will turn 28 in may)

-GMAT 710 (49Q, 39V)

-Graduated in 2008 from a business school in UK with a degree in accounting and finance. Topped my degree in year one. Ended up with an upper 2.1 degree.

-planned on working in UK itself in order to get some international work ex but had to move back to India because of my fathers death (3 weeks after final term). Had to take care of family affairs, both financial and emotional, so moved back.

-Over 6.5 years of experience working in the business development and strategy implementation division of a firm with interests across hydropower, textiles and education and annual revenues of over $100m. Currently working as the director of business development and strategy. Have worked across all 3 sectors. Currently leading a team in implementing the expansion/diversification of the education vertical. The project is at an advanced stage of implementation and the financial rewards from the project have already started flowing in. The idea for diversification was my brainchild and thus I was made the team leader of the project and have 17 individuals reporting to myself. The financial rewards from this project have already started flowing in. I'm also the youngest at the firm at a senior managerial role. I've held leadership roles across all the 3 verticals.

-short term goal is to make a transition to a top tier management consulting firm and work in new geographies (outside of India). Long term goal is to take up a senior management role at a fortune 500 firm. In my current role I'm coming up with and executing ideas that lead to improvement in business process and create value for the firm. I think a career in consulting will be a reasonable sell as my STG.

-Extra curricular: work with one of the most prominent environmental NGO in the country. Have been closely associated with environmental research over the last 4 years. Having lost my father to blood cancer I started a cancer foundation in his name and have raised over INR 1.5m which in turn was used to help underprivileged patients in their treatment. Also organize an annual blood donation camp. Also redrafted and implemented the corporate social responsibility charter at the firm with a focus on sanitation for the poor and improving female financial literacy. I've also worked for a member of parliament from 2009-2013 on devising a plan for development in the members parliamentary constituency.

I am new to this forum but have recently discovered the plethora of knowledge and resources available. Thank for in advance for taking to time to help us out.

Just took the GMAT on saturday (1st attempt) and got a 690. I think the interesting part is that Veral was higher than Quant:
V44 (98th %)
Q40 (67th%)
IR 4
87th percentile overall

-I am a 25 yr old male- Indian (US ciziten)
-Duke Undergrad BA Degree (Public Policy); Markets & Management Studies Certificate
-3.2 undergrad GPA
-3+ years work experience as an Insurance Broker--> both small company, national wholesale broker and currently with HUGE company worldwide brokerage (Marsh)

Besides participating in sports leagues and volunteering a few times a year, I do not have much else to boast in extra curriculars.

I'd ultimately like to pursue marketing, as I am intersted in Consumer Behavior and social psychology of business and marketing. Would mabye like to couple my interests of sports and media with it. (Not 100% sure at this time, which is why I am in no immediate rush to apply). I would envision myself applying 2016 fall.

Initial schools I am contemplating:
-Fuqua (worked 3 yrs there in undergrad as a Research Assistant with the Marketing Professors)
-UNC
-Emory
-UT-Austin

Any other suggestions of places I should check out? Or overall recommendations on where I should go from here? Thanks in advance.

Indian/IT/Female/27

GMAT - 660 [not sure whether to take a retest]
10th - 87%
12th - 88%
BE - 83%

Extra -curriculum activities - good. [Won multiple accolades in debate, extempore, anchoring, drama ]

International Experience - 1 year (Canada + Israel, multiple recognitions )

Career graph:
5 yrs work exp in Amdocs, a leading software provider in telecom domain. I joined the organisation as a trainee, but with four promotions in span of 5 years, quickly rose to senior consultant, working closely with sales team on branding of new product.
1 yrs work exp in Oracle Product India Ltd. - got chance to work in cutting edge technology and futuristic products.

MY expectation from MBA is either to stay in IT domain or move to consulting.

Colleges shortlisted:
1. HEC Paris
2. SDA Bocconi
3. Rotterdam B School
4. ISB
5. INSEAD (confused as GMAT score is low)

Please suggest whether I stand a fair chance in any of the above colleges. MY preference is of 1 yr MBA.

Thanks for reaching out! Your chances look good at each school, except for INSEAD and maybe ISB, unless you can get your GMAT up above 700.

1. HEC– minimum 600, average 685.

2. Bocconi – no minimum, average 664

The fast promotions are great. Try to find ways to enhance any leadership experience, and of course make the most of your international experience.

You have an excellent profile: Lots of great business experience, leadership, management… the extracurricular work is fantastic, full of initiative.
I like your chances and, although the over-saturation of MBA programs with Indian males makes admissions a lot more competitive for this demographic, you do not have the usual techie background and are therefore distinct.
If anything, I'd say it would help to get your GMAT score up a bit higher, but I don't think it's a "must."

Hi all,

I would like to know whether volunteering in any (Oxfam and etc.) non profit work is taken into account by adcoms? Or this must not be volunteering, but full time job? What are your take ons? ))

Hi there,

Thank you for reaching out. Volunteering is definitely taken into account as are all extra curricular activities as well as any aspect of your portfolio that sets you apart. Though it may depend on the nature of the volunteer work (how many hours, the cause, the responsibilities, the leadership capacity), it does not usually replace the necessary work experience that most admissions committee see as critical (generally 2+ years).

Thank you very much! That is very nice of you! Actually, I want to spend 2-3 hours of my week as a volunteer for for any non profit work. At the same time, I am full time banker, studying gmat + refreshing finance, managerial finance topics...))
