Thanks StratusMBACounselor !
Hi Asmish- and yes- stretch because of GMAT- your pool is so competitive that the 700 is tough. If you think you can get up to 730 range then I think maybe it is worth passing on Duke EA although that is the best path for admission but in this case if you think you can reasonably improve I would try. Knowing the automotive interest I would also encourage looking closely at Ross.
I am looking for schools with strong general management side.

About my Goals.
Short term Goal: Start as a product manager for a technology or an automotive firm (like GE) and then advance to a senior general management position with emphasis on strategy and leadership.
Long term Goal:: After working for about 8 to 10 years in senior management position, earning experience and establishing contacts along the way, i want to establish my own management consulting firm.

Also are my 'stretch' schools stretch due to average GMAT or some chink in my profile? I ask because i think my second shot at GMAT was below expectation (i was scoring around 710 to 730 in mocks). I am torn between Duke's EA with this score vs. another shot and R1. Any suggestions?

Ashmish,

Your assessment of your target schools is on the right lines. Although you’re below the median GMAT score for some schools, 700 isn’t bad, more so because you aren’t from over-represented Indian, Male, Software applicant pool. Focus on your strengths, demonstrate strong fit with the schools, and be reflective when sharing your experiences in essays. Best wishes for your application.

Hi Anil 99Colleges,

Thanks for the links.

Will i be ridiculously lucky if i make through Duke /Darden/Ross?
Or as i am not a typical Indian IT male, they are doable, provided i show good fit?

Also how do you gauge my post MBA goals? Ambitious, unique or cliched?
Also how do gauge my profile strength in general? Average, unique or everybody-writes-it?

Well, these schools aren't easy to get in, but if you put a solid application forward, you increase your chance.

My advice on profile is don't overthink something that can't be changed. You've to make the best of what you have. To illustrate what I mean, let me give examples from Haas and HBS. Haas turns down 80% of its applicants with 750+ GMAT score. Although it's just one element of their application, it's indicative of the fact that many strong profiles do get dinged, and that too in volumes. An inference is applicants with less-stellar profiles too get through. What matters is execution. How strong an application you build? (Just as success of startup ideas is more about execution, and not necessarily about the idea or pedigree of the team.)

HBS provides another example of such rejections. These are just two examples, but it's more or less the case across all schools.

Regarding your career goals, show why you are interested in them, and, better, if you can leverage some of your past experience to further them. And when you're talking about starting a company in future, show some understanding of the space, otherwise you'll come across as anybody else who mentions entrepreneurship as a career goal. Bottom-line, the reviewer of your application should feel that this guy is not talking superficial.
