Hi All ,
I had a one on one 15 minute call scheduled with one of the Adcom member. Following is the debrief of the same to the best of my retention :
Let's call her M and me as J
M : Hey Jatin, how are you doing. This is M from Fuqua school of business and I am calling you as you scheduled a chat.
J: Hi M, I am very well. How about yourself ?
**** ignoring ice breakers and coming to the point ****
M: I see you filled up the form and you wanted to ask about GRE scores and their prevalence
So we don't differentiate between GRE or GMAT however if you wish to go to finance or consulting many companies do need a GMAT score.
Also, you can use GRE to GMAT converter online and check your average score.to. compare where do you stand (this was such a bummer because I asked her that the tool is not accurate and if Fuqua uses some internal tool or datasets to judge GRE, she just said GRE is not the only parameter , we see all aspects basically warded off my question)
J : Could you please expound more on the Visa situation and employment opportunities post MBA in US ?
M:Well, there aren't any guarantees and it will always be like this. You get to work an year in US but then stem courses allow you to stay upto 3 years.
J: How easy or difficult would you say it is to pivot to consulting or finance for a candidate with a core Engineering background
M: That's definitely possible as you go through foundational courses to help you pivot.
J:Could you help me understand if international experience abroad can help.diversity points for an overrepresented pool of candidates (Indian Enegineers)
M: Definitely, you need to portray that in order to reflect your diversity and the value you add
J: I have a Duke Alumni in my team working with me for more than a year however I don't report to him directly. Can I ask him a LOR ?
M: It would be better to ask him a supplementary Alumni form instead of LOR. LOR should come from your reportimg manager.
.
Posted from my mobile device jbatraThe last question gives you an opportunity to have 3 LORs basically.
I think that is the only thing that will play to your advantage.
Also, if you're looking to go into Consulting in an MBB, you must take the GMAT "only" regardless of the kind of school you're looking at.
I know this is upsetting but basically, you have one year to prepare.
As far as I have known, Duke converts the GRE to GMAT using the ETS tool. They have started accepting EA scores too without prior approval. I do suggest you take the risk with a GMAT because basically, a 700 is all the companies look for and they don't care if you got a 730 or a 800. the 7 figure is enough to get you through the interview based on intellect.
For other tools of consulting, talk to the current students and stay pre-prepared. If you prepare now for the consulting recruitment, which happens at the earliest, you will stand out of the crowd.
In order to help, you can reach out to me for the GMAT prep. Initially, I will guide you to places that can help you for free and when we are on same page I can provide personalised guidance. GMAT isn't that hard when you learn the pattern
Also on a lighter note......
This thread is so cold that I can basically ski in the snow of the thread.
Keep it active people
