Hi, I am applying to ISB this for the 2016 intake as well.
Does anyone know the evaluator/recommendation questions to be asked to our employer this year.
I have found the questions from previous year online, but could'nt find anything for this year.
This would be helpful when approaching my manager for the recommendation. Thanks in advance.

1> Need -base scholarship : Fill this section only if you are applying for an ISB need-based waiver, the diversity waiver, the ISB-AIESEC waiver and the Bridge to India scholarship.
I want to know if I am eligible for this scholarship. If I go to college I have means of income resource, my parents are not working and they are dependent on my brother.

Ask your manager to download them and share them with you.
for him to have access, you will need to submit his official ID on the application portal

See this link: ISB class of 2016 profile at ISB website

According to this, the average GMAT is 700 for the entire class. Breakups also available by campus, but they are pretty similar.

Hi Folks

I gave my GMAT today. My sectional scores were 47/35 with an overall score of 670.
Overall Exp - 3.5 yrs Mech Engg - Aerospace Domain
Is it prudent to apply for ISB - R1 now or shall I apply in R2 with enhanced score if I am able to increase my score to say 700.
Does anyone of you know people who have been shortlisted/selected at this score?

While people do get selected at 670 as well (and lower scores too), those cases are more the exception rather than the norm. You should try and raise your score further, even if it means applying in R2. As an engineer, you would probably be strong at Quant and should look to raise that to Q49/Q50. Even if verbal remains the same (though you should try to raise that too slightly), Q50 V35 will still take you to an overall 700.

Hi Ankur, GyanOne, etc.

It'll be great if you guys could help with my application.

I have a 730 on GMAT (Q49, V40, AWA6, IR 8). I work with knowledge centre of one of the three big consulting firms (BCG, McK, Bain) as an Associate in consulting dept. I have worked on various research and consulting cases off-shore (never directly interacting with client). I'll have a full time experience of 2 years and 9 months if I join ISB next year.

I majored in Business Studies and graduated from Delhi University with 80%. I had >80% in 10th and 12th as well.

Always had good extra-curriculars.

1. At work: Part of employee training team ( took quite a bit of initiatives) and annual events team (responsible for company's annual events)
2. At college: I was president of the dramatics society (one of the most successful teams of Delhi University), organized quite a few events at national scale, won numerous awards, founded the sports society of college, organized outbound excursions, etc.

Apart from this, I love travelling and I plan to start my venture in the travel space after graduating and look to start more ventures in other industries as a long term goal.

Questions:

1. How well do you think I am positioned for ISB? Should I also apply to global schools? (People in the past from my office with similar position have gone to LBS, Kellogg, etc but with more experience)

2. For essay number 1, I was thinking of writing one of my achievements from college as it was significant and changed my outlook towards life? Does it make sense or should I stick to something more recent (which are not that substantial)?

Thanks in advance,
Sanchit

Hi Sanchit

You are very well positioned for ISB. You can also apply to global schools, but schools like Kellogg, LBS, and INSEAD (as examples) generally like to see a bit more experience (including some international experience) and leadership, though that is of course a general statement. Some research centers also have have the option of moving to the consulting side after a while, and that might be a significant advantage in case it is available/will be available, in case you are planning to apply to global schools later in your career.

For essay 1, ISB is open to all topics, including personal themes (as they say in the essay question itself). However, you should focus on the impact you had and what it shows about you, not just on the fact that the incident changed your outlook about life. Show clearly how it differentiates you as a candidate to ISB.

I was told by previous applicants that is a video essay.... But this year I could not find one, just the 3 essays:
1. Why you?
2. Defining professional moment / Diversity impact?
3. Why ISB and your future plans?

Has the video essay been dropped from the appl process?
Also, they have requested only for a single professional reco, is this normal? Is it possible to provide additional recos? and would this be beneficial?

Varun,

The video essay has not been part of ISB's admissions process for two years now (this year as well as the last). It had been introduced in 2013 (Co2015 admissions) and was dropped after that year.

Only a single professional reco is part of the ISB PGP admissions process for this year. It is not possible to provide additional recos.

FROM ISB Admissions Blog: ‘Putting Life on the Page’- tips to write a great essay
Essays are an important component of your ISB PGP application. They are a powerful tool to present your story, career goals and plan of action in a convincing and compelling way, and enhance your chance of getting an interview call.

Writing essays is referred to as ‘Putting life on the page’. You need to bring alive your application so it speaks for you. Here are some generic tips to keep in mind for writing great essays:

[*]Give yourself time to reflect on your experiences.[/*]
[*]Let your thoughts flow, and edit the answers later.[/*]
[*]The language and tone doesn’t have to be very professional but it shouldn’t be very casual either.[/*]
[*]Answer all parts of the question and do not exceed the word limit.[/*]
[*]Ask a friend or a colleague to review your essays.[/*]
This year, you are required to submit three compulsory essays and one optional essay that would help us know you better and to analyze your candidature. Below are some specific tips to write your essays well.

Essay 1: If we were to admit just one more student, make a compelling argument as to why that student should be you by describing an (only one) achievement in your personal / professional life that you are most proud of. What did you do that sets you apart from others? What did you learn? [400 words max.]

Purpose:  This essay in an attempt to assess what it is that makes you stand out from the crowd, your USP, and the value you will bring to the class.

Tips to write Essay 1:

[*]Think about one achievement – professional or personal, that you take pride in – which has positively impacted your life and which highlights your uniqueness.[/*]
[*]Give a brief background/ context of the incident.[/*]
[*]Identify what about you sets you apart from others.[/*]
[*]Highlight your approach to the situation and what did you achieve.[/*]
[*]Elaborate and conclude with what this experience has taught you.[/*]
Essay 2a: Describe a (only one) defining moment in your personal/ professional life when you had to make a risky decision, and explain what you did, why and the outcome? [300 words max.]

Purpose:  This question assesses your risk taking ability and tries to understand your thought process when you are in a challenging situation.

Tips to write Essay 2a:

[*]Give the context of the situation: What was the challenge you faced?[/*]
[*]Elaborate on what options did you have and the implications of each option.[/*]
[*]Describe how you narrowed down to the option you chose to go ahead with, and what were the consequences.[/*]
[*]If the situation did not turn out well, mention the steps you undertook to fix it and/or what you learnt from the experience[/*]
[OR]

Essay 2b: Describe a (only one) situation in your personal/ professional life when you had to interact with people from diverse backgrounds. How did it affect you and what did you learn? [300 words max.]

Purpose:  This question tries to assess your adaptability and comfort level of working with people from diverse backgrounds. Diversity could be in terms of culture, work function, occupation, geography,  ethnicity, or any other.

Tips to write Essay 2b:

[*]Give a brief description on the situation – what?, when? & where?[/*]
[*]Describe the challenges you were facing . Give examples if possible.[/*]
[*]Talk about how you went about addressing those challenges.[/*]
[*]Conclude with what you learnt from the experience.[/*]
Essay 3: What are your post ISB career plans and how will your past experiences and the Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGP) contribute to taking you there? [300 words max.]

Purpose:  The purpose of this question is to understand if you have done your homework. It’s also to understand your clarity of thought, your expectations from the PGP and your career focus.

Tips to write Essay 3:

[*]This is your make or break chance of getting an interview call. Your answer needs to emphasis on – why you think you are a fit with the school?[/*]
[*]Learn about what the programme offers and understand what is relevant for you.[/*]
[*]Introspect on your reasons for pursuing the programme.[/*]
[*]Describe your career progression till date and your career goals. If you are looking for an industry switch, explain why?[/*]
[*]Talk about how the PGP course will help you to achieve your career goals.[/*]
Essay 4: [Optional] – Please use this space to explain any career breaks/ provide any other information not covered elsewhere in the application that could significantly impact your candidature at ISB. Note: It is not necessary to write this essay. Please use this space only if there is something really significant that you would like us to know. [200 words max.]

Purpose: This is a profile highlighter. If you had a career break or have a significant achievement you want to talk about use it to your advantage. This is your elevator pitch.

Tips to write Essay 4:

[*]If you had any career breaks – justify the hiatus. Describe why you took the break and what you did during the time. Conclude with what the experience taught you.[/*]
[*]Add your co-curricular activities that you are proud of to emphasize the contributions you can make to School and the recruiting firms in the future.[/*]
[*]Do not answer this question if there are no solid accomplishments. That might work against you.[/*]
Essay 5: [Re applicant Essay] – How has your profile changed from the time you last applied to the ISB? [300 words max.]

Purpose: This is to understand how you have refined your candidature based on our previous feedback.

Tips to write Essay5:

[*]Do a comparative analysis of your application this year v/s last year.[/*]
[*]Highlight the significant positive changes in your overall profile.[/*]
[*]Describe the efforts  you have put in to bring about these changes.[/*]
And finally keep in mind that you have limited words to make a lasting impression. Choose them well.
