Marketing Analyst: Despite the recent spike in online advertising by most competitors, our company has not increased its digital marketing budget and has seen no decrease in market share. Given that the cost of online advertising has significantly increased due to higher demand, we can conclude that our existing marketing strategies are still effective. Furthermore, our sales team has reported an increase in customer engagement and satisfaction with current marketing efforts.

In the analyst's reasoning, the two portions in boldface play which of the following roles?

(A) The first is the analyst's main conclusion; the second provides evidence to support that conclusion.

(B) The first is evidence that serves as the basis for rejecting one explanation; the second is the analyst's additional explanation.

(C) The first is a statement of fact that the analyst disputes; the second provides an alternative explanation that the analyst offers.

(D) The first presents a scenario that seems contradictory to expected outcomes; the second provides supporting evidence that explains the actual outcome observed.

(E) The first outlines an initial observation that is under question; the second provides evidence to refute a potential objection to the analyst's final conclusion.

The first provides clear picture and hence we can reason out the situation at hand the, second provides evidence to the effect hence any refutation can be substantiated.

IMO - D

(A) The first is the analyst's main conclusion; the second provides evidence to support that conclusion. // Eliminate - 1st BF is not conclusion.

(B) The first is evidence that serves as the basis for rejecting one explanation; the second is the analyst's additional explanation. // Eliminate there is no rejection happening in the argument.

(C) The first is a statement of fact that the analyst disputes; the second provides an alternative explanation that the analyst offers. // Eliminate because there is no dispute.

(D) The first presents a scenario that seems contradictory to expected outcomes; the second provides supporting evidence that explains the actual outcome observed. // Correct because 1st BF starts with despite and expected outcome was market share should have decreased but it remain same.

(E) The first outlines an initial observation that is under question; the second provides evidence to refute a potential objection to the analyst's final conclusion. // Eliminate no observation is under question.

Conclusion: our existing marketing strategies are still effective
The first boldface statement is something the analyst observed/noticed and second in line with the conclusion.
The best option is D which supports both of this.
the contradiction is that even though everyone has increased their budget, we haven't done that and we haven't seen any negative impact of it.

The reasoning provided is:

Portion 1: Despite the recent spike in online advertising by most competitors, our company has not increased its digital marketing budget and has seen no decrease in market share.

Portion 2: Furthermore, our sales team has reported an increase in customer engagement and satisfaction with current marketing efforts.

The analyst concludes that the company's existing marketing strategies are still effective based on these observations. Let's analyze each portion:

Portion 1:
This portion presents an initial observation that the company has not increased its digital marketing budget despite competitors doing so, and yet it has seen no decrease in market share.
This observation seems contradictory to what one might expect, as normally, one might expect that not increasing the budget when competitors do would lead to a loss in market share.

Portion 2:
This portion provides additional information that the sales team has reported an increase in customer engagement and satisfaction.
This additional information supports the analyst's conclusion that the current marketing strategies are effective despite not increasing the digital marketing budget.

With this understanding, let's evaluate the options:

(A) The first is the analyst's main conclusion; the second provides evidence to support that conclusion.

Incorrect. The first portion is not the main conclusion; it is an observation.

(B) The first is evidence that serves as the basis for rejecting one explanation; the second is the analyst's additional explanation.

Incorrect. The first portion is an observation, not evidence for rejecting an explanation.

(C) The first is a statement of fact that the analyst disputes; the second provides an alternative explanation that the analyst offers.

Incorrect. The analyst does not dispute the first portion; it is a statement of fact.

(D) The first presents a scenario that seems contradictory to expected outcomes; the second provides supporting evidence that explains the actual outcome observed.

Correct. The first portion presents a scenario that contradicts the expected outcome (no increase in budget, no decrease in market share). The second portion provides supporting evidence (increased customer engagement and satisfaction) that explains the actual outcome.

(E) The first outlines an initial observation that is under question; the second provides evidence to refute a potential objection to the analyst's final conclusion.

Incorrect. The first portion is not under question, and the second portion is not refuting an objection but rather supporting the conclusion.

Thus, the correct answer is:D

Conclusion of the passage is : we can conclude that our existing marketing strategies are still effective

(A) The first is the analyst's main conclusion; the second provides evidence to support that conclusion.
The first one is not the analyst's conclusion, it is simply a set of facts that the analyst has noticed

(B) The first is evidence that serves as the basis for rejecting one explanation; the second is the analyst's additional explanation.
The first is clearly not a basis to reject the analyst's additional explanation of evidence why his strategy is effective, false

(C) The first is a statement of fact that the analyst disputes; the second provides an alternative explanation that the analyst offers.
The analysts did not dispute the facts presented on the first part, he is just reporting what he is noticing, and in the second part the analyst is not giving any alternative explanation he is simply stating that their stratefy is actually effective and giving evidences about that

(D) The first presents a scenario that seems contradictory to expected outcomes; the second provides supporting evidence that explains the actual outcome observed.
The first could be true, but "sales team has reported an increase in customer engagement and satisfaction with current marketing efforts" could not ac as an explanation for the actual outcome of "no decrease in market share", simply there is no connection, False

(E) The first outlines an initial observation that is under question; the second provides evidence to refute a potential objection to the analyst's final conclusion.

This is the correct answer choice
The first one os a notice/observation that the passage is actually dealing with, and the second gives as evidence of the claim that the strategy is effective. so It serves as an evidence to refute any one who can object the analyst by saying " your strategy is not effective, how can you prove that?"

Correct answer is E

The analyst is arguing that existing marketing strategies are still effective, despite not increasing online advertising like competitors.

Let's examine the role of each boldface portion:

The first boldface presents a situation that seems counterintuitive: competitors increased online advertising, but the company didn't and still maintained market share.
The second boldface provides additional evidence supporting the effectiveness of current marketing strategies.

(D) Correct. The first boldface presents a scenario that seems contradictory (no increase in advertising but no loss in market share), and the second provides supporting evidence for why this might be happening (increased customer engagement and satisfaction).

First Boldface Portion: "Despite the recent spike in online advertising by most competitors, our company has not increased its digital marketing budget and has seen no decrease in market share." => this sets up a scenario that seems contradictory to expected outcomes since a recent spike in online advertising by most competitors would make us think that the company should lose market share but on the contrary, it maintained its market share despite not investing more in advertising.

Second Boldface Portion: "Our sales team has reported an increase in customer engagement and satisfaction with current marketing efforts." => this is to provide supporting evidence to explain the conclusion stated in the sentence before that, that the exisiting marketing strategies are still effective.

Mapped both roles to the answer choice => D

A is wrong since statement 1 is not a conclusion, B is wrong since statement 1 is not evidence for rejecting an explanation, C is wrong since the analyst does not dispute the first portion, E is wrong since statement 1 is not under question.

Bolf face 1 : Is showing us a scenario that is contradictory to the expected outcome of decrease in the market share.
Boldface2: Supports the actual outcome observed i.e the customer satisfaction and the product working despite not having increase in budget.
So option D is the answer.

The answer, according to me, is D.
Kinda hard to explain but I'll try nonetheless. So, according to option A, the first boldface is the main conclusion. But the main conclusion, according to me is that the company's marketing strategy is still effective.
Option C talks about the first boldface being disputed...but it isn't so and also, the second boldface is not an explanation.
Option B talks about rejecting explanation, and the analyst has not rejected anything.
Although D and E might be confusing, but D seems more suitable.

Neither of the boldface parts present the conclusion, thus the role suggested by option A, for the first boldface portion, is incorrect. Instead the conclusion is present in the 2nd sentence, of the given argument, which is not a boldface portion. Hence, it is safe to eliminate option A for the role suggested for the first boldface portion.

(B) The first is evidence that serves as the basis for rejecting one explanation; the second is the analyst's additional explanation.
The first part of the boldface is indeed a shred of evidence but the given argument does not reject anything. Additionally, the second boldface portion can be classified as additional support. Therefore, we can eliminate option B based on the role suggested for the first boldface portion.

(C) The first is a statement of fact that the analyst disputes; the second provides an alternative explanation that the analyst offers.
All pieces of information presented in the argument are in-line with each other, thus to claim that the first boldface is about a dispute is incorrect. Moreover, the second boldface portion has been mentioned by the analyst to provide additional support rather than an 'alternative' explanation.
Eliminate option C.

(D) The first presents a scenario that seems contradictory to expected outcomes; the second provides supporting evidence that explains the actual outcome observed.
The first boldface portion presents unexpected result; information presented in the second boldface does explain how same marketing helped to be on par with the spike in online advertising.
CORRECT

(E) The first outlines an initial observation that is under question; the second provides evidence to refute a potential objection to the analyst's final conclusion.
Given argument presents the results of a market change yet it does not intend to question an observation. Adding to that, results are presented without refuting or objecting to the conclusion. So we can eliminate option E as well.

Option D represents the correct roles played by each boldface portion.

First Boldface Portion: "Despite the recent spike in online advertising by most competitors, our company has not increased its digital marketing budget and has seen no decrease in market share."
This seems like a contridictary observation.

Second Boldface Portion: "Furthermore, our sales team has reported an increase in customer engagement and satisfaction with current marketing efforts."
this seems like additional information that supports the conclusion that the company's existing marketing strategies are still effective.

(A) The first is the analyst's main conclusion; the second provides evidence to support that conclusion. (First is not a conclusion at all, eliminate)
(B) The first is evidence that serves as the basis for rejecting one explanation; the second is the analyst's additional explanation. (First can be an evidence but there is no rejection of any kind, eliminate)
(C) The first is a statement of fact that the analyst disputes; the second provides an alternative explanation that the analyst offers. (Analyst is not disputing the first boldface portion)
(D) The first presents a scenario that seems contradictory to expected outcomes; the second provides supporting evidence that explains the actual outcome observed. (This is inline with what we observered, first is contradictory out basis of which analsyt is basing his conclusing and second is more evidence to support it, correct)
(E) The first outlines an initial observation that is under question; the second provides evidence to refute a potential objection to the analyst's final conclusion. (First is observation but its never under question and D is exactly what we are looking for hence, eliminate)
