But there is one type of text I cannot deal correctly and efficiently with: the one paragraph text!

gre and gmat rc , firstly go for structure and then go for answer............
structure mean - A brief idea about rc ,within 2min
go for answer mean- try to match question detail with passage detail
maximum time spend on a question - 2min

Hello BB,

Sorry to throw this question at you - as I am sure it has been a while since your GMAT. But I will ask it anyways, in hopes for a reply. And will try to keep it short.

You mentioned - that you takes notes while you read & summarize each paragraph briefly (after reading the para) and repeat this for every para, and then you summarize the whole para.

1. When you paraphrase and summarize each para - do you note down the short summary (of each para and the passage)?

2. After this whole exercise - when you answer the questions, do you go back to read the passage or parts of passage? OR Do you just force yourself to answer based on whatever information you gathered? (because of time limitations)

Thanks!

I failed gmat many times and many years to realize that in this forum there is no discussion of how to read.

the discussion here is about how to answer the questions and what to read.

but

the most important thing is how to read. only if you know how to read, reading a lot is effective.

I read many years without efficiency, without result . now I understand that how to read is the first thing to know. this skill is taught in english course such as, in vietnam, TOEFL courses.

read and analyse the sentence structure at the same time. you can properly understand the sentence when you know the grammatical roles of entities. This point means you have to realize the grammatical roles intantly when you read the sentences. after getting a high score on TOEFL I have not had this skill.

I reread basic grammar books and begin the habit of finding the grammatical roles of entities. the result is clear. I learn both grammar and reading skill. reading skill is just a process of analysing and realizing the grammatical roles of entities.

know how to read before read a lot

BB
what about Harvard articles and American science articles, are these kinds of reading helpful in enhancing reading skills?
Another question, when I read, I pick out ocean of new vocabularies that I do not know, so is it right to study them or it is a waste of time and depend on that reading again and over again will fix them in my mind ?
Please note that I am not an English native.
thank you in advance

I would encourage you to try out all the strategies highlighted in this post. My strategy is kind of weird.
Give it a go:
- Start reading in a fake-newsreader-kind of accent. This kind of helps me with internalizing the content of the passage in a single read. I know that lipsing slows you down but still this is the one strategy that works for me.
- If the passage is a really hard one, I make sure I understand the first line and understand what the author is trying to say.
- I generally swear if the author points out something bad in the passage, say 'awesome' if something good happens. This keeps me connected with the author. Especially if you are Indian words like bc/mc work really really well.

That's my 0.2$ strategy. PM me if anything.

Regards,
Mandar

Just discovered a great link in OP, Gin's RC technique. Give it a try if you also happened to overlook it.
