Did I hear correctly that this was the first time you interacted with students for CR on such a
platform?? Amazing session with correct pacing and awesome insights. It is no surprise that such an
extremely difficult task could be accomplished by veteran as you with such an ease.

Could you and our Exec Producer take up next challenge of conducting such a session on RC (just covering reading strategies
and linkage of paragraphs like we did for sentences here in CR shall be useful)?

Would be grateful if you could oblige.

Thank you once again for the kind words, adkikani! You're making me blush.

I'm so happy to hear that this was useful. I feel like CR and RC are tricky in a webinar format, because everybody finds unique and different ways to make mistakes, and I can only guess at the types of mistakes that any particular viewer is making. I'm sure that some viewers will think that the webinar was a waste of an hour, and others will hopefully love it. :)

And yes, I really want to do some webinars on RC too, very much in the same spirit as today's. We're going to take December off from webinars in honor of both the holidays and my life as we know it coming to an end fatherhood, but we're working on a webinar schedule for the new year. RC will definitely be part of it, somewhere.

Thank you again!

Hi GMATNinja,

Thanks for such an awesome session.

I have some confusions regarding why A & why not B for the last question from the session.

Building a space station, in which astronauts would live for a considerable time, is essential even if the space station project were to contribute no new knowledge about space or Earth that could not otherwise be obtained. For future missions to explore Mars, we will need the medical knowledge that the space station project will give us about the limits human capacities to live in spacecraft for an extended time.

The argument makes the assumption that

(A) the exploration of Mars will be carried out by people travelling in spacecraft and not by robots alone.

(B) the capacities of astronauts are typical of those of ordinary human beings.

The argument says "Building a space station, in which astronauts would live for a considerable time, is essential even if the space station project were to contribute no new knowledge about space or Earth that could not otherwise be obtained." This is a generic conclusion not concerning Mars. So we take a look at A, it could be possible that we use only robots for Mars exploration. For other space exploration programs with Astronauts, we still need medical knowledge. Argument still works.

For B, what if astronauts have some special capabilities (due to their training etc) which are not there in ordinary human beings. Will collecting medical info about them help?
Kindly help.

Regards
Manish

OK, here's the quick preview of this Wednesday's YouTube LIVE webinar! You could think of last Wednesday's session as Critical Reasoning 101, explained through the lens of strengthen, weaken, and assumption questions. This week's session will be dedicated to funny cousins of strengthen, weaken, and assumption questions: "evaluate the argument" and "fill in the blank" and a couple of other related oddballs. The baseline techniques are very much the same, but the questions look different. (And adkikani, I'm planning to discuss the capuchin monkey question in this Wednesday's webinar. It fits nicely with the theme.)

I'm still arguing with myself about which examples to use, but as soon as GMAT Ninja and I finish fighting with each other, I'll post the questions on this thread. ;)

And ManishKM1, both questions you posted deserve some attention! They're both a little bit difficult, though, and I don't think they're the easiest examples for webinars that are meant to cover some basic principles. We covered the Smithtown one in a QOTD: https://gmatclub.com/forum/qotd-smithto ... 39409.html. And I'll make sure that our pal Mayor Delmont makes an appearance in next week's QOTD. If our explanations on the QOTD threads don't clear up your doubts, feel free to ask follow-ups directly on those threads, and we'll take a look.

Oh, and we'll also publish a full solution to the space station question in Thursday's QOTD, so keep an eye out for that one, too.

See you all on Wednesday on the GMAT Club YouTube channel! https://www.youtube.com/user/gmatclub

As threatened, here are the questions for the webinar. Once again, I strongly strongly recommend printing these out before the webinar begins -- it'll make the lesson much more useful. And if you have some extra time on your hands, you can check out last week's video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j2nVgm4d8mQ. This week's will build on the fundamentals we discussed last time.

See you at 7:30 a.m. Pacific time! Same place as usual: http://www.youtube.com/user/gmatclub

Hello GMATNinja,

Sensie I am feeling the heat of "evaluation of argument" type questions. Could you please point out a good source to revisit. I have been absolutely thumped by these questions since 3 days.

Hm, you're struggling with "evaluate the argument" questions, but not strengthen, weaken, or assumption questions? They're all awfully similar, it's just that the "evaluate the argument questions" are sort of bi-directional or non-directional: the piece of information you're looking for could potentially strengthen OR weaken the argument.

Which specific questions are giving you trouble? They're official questions? Maybe reply with a bunch of links to the ones that are causing trouble, and then maybe I can add them to the next few rounds of QOTDs if they're good examples?

Could you take up this general Q which must have been encountered in
past while dealing with students preparing for GMAT?

One or another online courses provides tons of online videos (60-80hrs) and
practice Qs (800-1200) to strengthen basics of concepts tested in GMAT.
I believe the best approach for a student is to jump to OG to gauge waters by actually diving in
after seeing video modules. But assuming he has less than 60% accuracy on OG and instead
of proceeding further one realizes it is better to go to basics and know which application one falters on
and he may well do few non-OG Qs to apply what he had learnt. As per you what is the
best trade off between practicing non-OG Qs (in terms of a number) from online courses to
return back to OG given quota of OG is limited?

We have tons and tons of debate over Qs from non official sources but while dealing
with them one tends to overthink during actual practice - Why is this not getting in my head?!!? :x
and spend invaluable time over it.

Hope it is not a too nasty Q !!

Sorry everybody, we're postponing this week's session to THURSDAY at the usual time. Thanks to a horrendous traffic jam between Pune and Bombay, our esteemed producer is unavailable to perform his usual duties on Wednesday. The 148-km journey, I'm told, might take a total of 34 hours.

Or something like that. The numbers are approximate. ;)

See you all on THURSDAY at 7:30 a.m. Pacific/9:00 p.m. IST!

My turn to apologize for the slow response! Honestly, I wouldn't worry at all about any of them, other than the very last one -- the OG question. And even that one is pretty tough, so I wouldn't assume that it's a sign that you're fundamentally struggling on "evaluate the argument" questions. If you feel like you really don't fundamentally understand how those questions work, that might be reason to worry -- but of the four you mentioned, three are of very dubious quality. :)

Heh, it would take an entire book chapter to answer this one accurately and thoroughly. A related discussion can be found on this thread about LSAT materials: https://gmatclub.com/forum/actual-lsat- ... l#p1964284

The quick version: for quant, I don't think there's much harm in doing non-official questions, as long as you save some of the good stuff for close to your exam. On verbal, I think that non-official questions are deeply, deeply problematic, and I almost never let my students use them at all. Even the ones we've written ourselves.

The question of how to mix official GMAT with "other" questions (LSAT for verbal, non-official stuff for quant) just depends on the person. If you're fortunate enough not to need much extra practice, then you might not need anything other than the OG and quant/verbal guides and GMATPrep software. If you're less fortunate? You might have to be really, really careful to save the best official materials for close to your exam, and use other questions as "filler" until then.

I'm trying to finish up an article about how to stretch your official GMAT verbal materials -- I can't promise that I'll manage to post it before the babypocalypse (coming any moment!) but I'll do my best, since some of it is related to your questions.

Can you do a few more sessions on CR, with more on those tough Assumptions that test the structure, logic and those subtle modifiers :)
