I do not believe it is hyperbolic to say that this is nothing short of a disaster. IMO, all of the top programs, who still need to fill seats, will waive the GMAT for 2020 intake as a result of the alternative presented. It'll be a minimum 45 days from now before anyone can take the exam in real conditions. The online GMAT is clearly not a comparable test-GMAC's hands were forced and they did the correct PR move. I understand where they are coming from-in their eyes any of form that would include physical notepad/whiteboard from home would compromise the integrity of the exam and all scores to date. Sucks but it is what it is
How do you "understand where they are coming from"? IMO, they could easily allow the use of whiteboards, ensuring people erase what they have written afterward. They could also ask for pictures of the whiteboards to do some further analysis. And then finally, in the rare, rare circumstances that some may have the audacity to try to memorize the questions in the exam, they could utilize questions that are unique to the COVID-19 times, so therefore, it wouldn't even truly matter if some tried to remember the questions, in terms of the test's long term integrity.
In short, I think there are plenty of preventive measures they can take to prevent cheating. If someone is going to just write down the questions the whole time, you can tell that a person is doing that because that person's test score will suffer as a result of he/she not being focused on the task at hand. I really think you can predict these things through tracing the score in comparison to what the person got in the past, taking pictures of a person's whiteboard to analyze it, and making the person wipe off the whiteboard after. I also think they blow cheating WAY out of proportion -- we are individuals who are going for our second degrees. How likely are we to cheat, statistically?
I am hopeful they allow the use of some e-stylus setup or something. I have a touch screen laptop too, but I still think using a touch screen laptop for Quant is a JOKE. It's not right - I have spent >150 hours of doing Quant problems with a pen/pad everytime (as I am sure many others have too), and to take that away is simply laughable/bizarre. They are going to get roasted on their webinar on Friday!
