Over the last fifteen years, the consumption of beef has decreased significantly in many parts of the world. This decrease has coincided with an increasing public awareness of the adverse environmental effects of cattle ranching. Thus, the decrease in beef consumption must have been caused by the consumers’ awareness of the environmentally damaging effects of cattle ranching.

Which of the following, if true, most seriously calls into question the explanation above?

A. On average, people consume twenty percent less beef today than they did fifteen years ago.
B. Habitual beef eaters may suffer mild gastrointestinal distress for a few weeks or so after significantly reducing their beef consumption.
C. Beef prices increased steadily in the last fifteen years because of the degradation of land used to graze cattle.
D. The consumption of poultry, fish, and other forms of seafood has increased over the last fifteen years.
E. Gourmet beef sales have held steady as sales of regular beef have declined.

A promising student of taekwondo once asked his coach how long it would take him to earn his black belt, signifying the end of his training. Thinking carefully, the coach replied, “If you practice three hours a day for six days a week, you could earn your black belt in five years.” Unhappy, the student asked, “What if I practice eight hours a day, every day?” The coach then said, “If you do so, you will probably never move beyond a blue belt.”

The main point that the coach makes here is that in martial arts, a critical value is

A. curiosity
B. patience
C. dedication
D. vigor
E. resolution

The indigenous tribes of the Western Hemisphere were first introduced to horses through the Europeans. The use of horses revolutionized the hunting and transportation capabilities of these tribes. However, tribes that started using horses soon began to suffer from outbreaks of diseases such as salmonellosis, which can be transmitted from horses to humans. Yet, such outbreaks were rare among the Europeans, although they used horses more extensively.

If true, which of the statements below best explains the discrepancy in the outbreak of diseases such as salmonellosis?

A. Generational exposure to domesticated horses allowed the Europeans to develop stronger immune responses to horse borne diseases.
B. Horses raised in Europe were more susceptible to disease than those raised in the Western Hemisphere were.
C. After their introduction into the Western Hemisphere, horses became status symbols among the indigenous tribes, due to the horses’ exotic nature and impressive size.
D. Many Europeans who worked with horses were also exposed to horse borne diseases other than salmonellosis.
E. Before the discovery that horses transmit diseases such as salmonellosis, such conditions were attributed to an imbalance of fluids within the body.

Economist: Universal Basic Income (UBI) may help mitigate wealth disparity and alleviate socioeconomic issues caused by increased industrial automation in many countries. However, since the long-term feasibility of UBI is unknown, I do not recommend its implementation.

Cabinet Member: This position is quite different from your usual stand. You routinely recommend traditional economic measures that carry a significant risk of failure, so it seems unlikely that feasibility concerns are the true reason behind your reluctance to support UBI.

The flaw in the Cabinet Member’s argument is its failure to take into consideration that

A. the factors that affect the feasibility of UBI are different from those that affect the risk of traditional economic measures
B. the economist may not believe that UBI has been definitively proven to be effective
C. the risk of failure of established measures can be weighed against the benefits of such measures, but the risk of failure of unestablished measures cannot
D. it takes time for the feasibility risks inherent in an economic policy to become apparent
E. if wealth disparity and the socioeconomic issues caused by increased industrial automation are not addressed, they can lead to severe social unrest

The table below shows the numbers of four pastry box types sold by a bakery in March and in April.

March April
Classic 260 232
Chocolate 180 188
Berry 150 161
Pistachio 210 219

If the selling price of each box type stayed the same from March to April, did the bakery earn more revenue from the sales of these four box types in April than in March?

(1) The Pistachio box was priced lower than each of the other three box types.

(2) The Classic box was priced higher than each of the other three box types.

The earliest archaeological evidence of the Minoan civilization in Crete are elaborate metalworks dated to the early Bronze Age. However, archaeologists recently uncovered ceramic urns predating the Bronze Age at Crete. These urns closely resemble Minoan pottery of the late Bronze Age, also found at Crete. Further, the patterns painted on these urns are highly distinct from those found on ceramic urns produced by other Bronze Age civilizations known to trade with Crete before the Bronze Age. Therefore, Minoans surely lived in Crete before the Bronze Age.

Which of the following, if true, most seriously weakens the argument?

A. The Minoans are not known to have used metal to make urns.
B. Successor cultures often adopt the art styles of cultures that inhabited the same site earlier.
C. There is archaeological evidence to suggest that some of the oldest ceramic urns found at Crete were reserved for use by elite families.
D. Minoan caves painted in the early Bronze Age contains scenes in which Minoans using metalworks are pictured.
E. The patterns used to decorate everyday objects were of great cultural importance to the Minoans who lived in Crete in the early Bronze Age.

Columnist: There is considerable psychological research suggesting that children interested in competitive hobbies show more hostility than children interested in non-competitive hobbies do. However, the general conclusion of the psychological researchers that competitive hobbies encourage participants to be hostile does not hold. The children interested in competitive hobbies were likely more hostile to begin with than the children interested in non-competitive hobbies were.

Which of the following, if true, would most strengthen the conclusion drawn by the psychological researchers?

A. The research studies deliberately excluded all children who were interested in both competitive and non-competitive hobbies.
B. The children interested in competitive hobbies, but not those interested in non-competitive ones, were always aware at the onset of the research that they were being tested for hostility.
C. The same research indicated that the children interested in competitive hobbies had great respect for team performance, whereas the children interested in non-competitive hobbies were most concerned with individual performance.
D. The children interested in competitive hobbies became more hostile during competitions and remained so long after, whereas there was no such increase in hostility among the children interested in non-competitive hobbies.
E. Throughout the world, more incidents of hostility occur at all-boys competitions than occur at all-girls competitions.

Even though offering payday loans through public sector banks could be a strong source of revenue for the government, doing so should not be allowed. Offering such loans in public sector banks would not serve the best interests of the public. When the public starts taking on more payday loans, its overall financial health suffers.

The argument depends on which of the following?

A) The public will be financially healthier if it avoids payday loans entirely than if it only takes out such loans infrequently.
B) The public does not currently take on an amount of payday loans that is detrimental to its overall financial health.
C) If payday loans were offered by public sector banks, the public would take on more such loans.
D) The public generally prefers loan services from public sector banks to those from private sector banks.
E) The government should primarily be concerned with safeguarding the financial health of the public.

Disaster Management Specialist: The Citizen’s Party is known for consistently seeking opportunities to serve the public; to this end, it has been buying container homes and reserving them for use in the times of floods the city experiences every year. However, container homes last just for a few years, and the party has not even looked into procuring pre-fabricated homes, even though they are more durable, can be renovated easily, and take less space to store when not in use. Thus, some political commentators have argued that the Citizen’s Party’s arrangements do not generate confidence in the party’s ability to take practical decisions. However, the cost of setting up a pre-fabricated home is much higher than that of setting up container homes, and the waiting time for a pre- fabricated home to be delivered by manufacturers is significantly longer than the time it takes to build a container home. Therefore, the political commentators’ conclusion is probably incorrect.

In the disaster management specialist's argument, the two boldface portions play which of the following roles?

(A) The first supports the conclusion of the argument made by the disaster management specialist; the second questions that conclusion.
(B) The first states the conclusion of the argument made by the political commentators; the second states the conclusion of the argument made by the disaster management specialist.
(C) The first states the conclusion of the argument made by the disaster management specialist; the second supports that conclusion.
(D) The first supports the conclusion of the argument made by the political commentators; the second states that conclusion.
(E) Each supports the conclusion of the argument made by the disaster management specialist.
