Paleontologists have discovered the fossilized remains of a 66 million year old Gondwanatherian mammal; one that they believe is a species previously unknown to science.

(A) that they believe is

“one” refers to “remains”; thus this choice illogically implies that the remains are a species, nonsense
We need “of”

(B) that they believe it to be

“one” refers to “remains”; thus this choice illogically implies that the remains are believed tobe a species, nonsense
We need “of”

(C) they believe that it is of

“it” disagrees with “remains”.

(D) they believe that is

“one” refers to “remains”; thus this choice illogically implies that the remains are believed tobe a species, nonsense
We need “of”

(E) they believe to be of

Correct: remains are of a species – logical meaning.

Hence E

(A) that they believe is
(B) that they believe it to be
(C) they believe that it is of
(D) they believe that is
(E) they believe to be of

We will eliminate the answer choices.
Quote:
(A) that they believe is
- the function of "one" us the same as the function of "that".
- Unidiom. Believe to be of is the correct usage
Out.

Quote:
(B) that they believe it to be
Same as A.
Out.

Quote:
(C) they believe that it is of
- Unidiom. Believe to be of is the correct usage.
Out.

Quote:
(D) they believe that is
- Unidiom. Believe to be of is the correct usage.
Out.

Quote:
(E) they believe to be of
No mistake. Keep it.

So I choose E.
