Hello GMATClub. When most people list out their test history, you can generally see a clear upward trend from test to test. Also, it seems to me that most people score within 10 - 20 points of their highest GMAT CAT. However, I think I may have the most inconsistent GMAT history anyone has ever seen.
MGMAT 1 - 640 (Q38 - V38)
MGMAT 2 - 690 (Q45 - V38)
MGMAT 3 - 670 (Q44 - V37)
MGMAT 4 - 730 (Q45 - V45)
GMATPrep 1 - 680 (Q47 - V35)
GMATPrep 2 - 730 (Q49 - V41)
GMATPrep 3 - 750 (Q50 - V41)
GMATPrep 4 - 760 (Q50 - V42)
REAL GMAT 1 - 710 (Q49 - V37)
GMAT Prep 5 - 710 (Q46 - V41)
Has anyone experienced anything similar on their end? Unfortunately I did catch a cold the day before my actual GMAT and the Advil began to fade midway through the verbal section. I was sweating bullets and chalked up my poor verbal performance to the illness. But then I took another CAT today in good health and scored the lowest in Quant in months. Am I missing something here? Do I need to be more disciplined in my review and in my test-taking approach? Why am I not more consistent? I'm going to take this exam ONE more time in two weeks to maximize my chances. If anyone has any last second advice I would greatly appreciate it.

First off, a 710/Q49 is an outstanding score (it's right around the 90th percentile overall), so you can apply to any Business Schools that interest you. As such, a retest is likely not necessary.
At higher-and-higher scoring levels, the GMAT becomes really 'sensitive' to little mistakes - so your score 'fluctuations' aren't that surprising. Take a good look at any CAT that you felt you "underperformed" on - and ask yourself how many questions you got wrong because of a silly/little mistake (that you SHOULD have gotten correct). Getting sick right before you took the Official GMAT almost certainly impacted your performance, so you might very well score higher if you take the GMAT when you're not sick. That having been said, the GMAT will give you the score that you EARN, so you won't be able to 'coast' to a much higher score.

First off, congrats on your score. I know you expect more from yourself, but regardless your score gives you a chance anywhere in the world. If you wan't to improve your chance, it won't be hard to do--but it will be tedious.
1. Make a binder of every question you got wrong on your practice tests.
2. Using that binder, go through it EVERY day. Ask other people how they did them, find videos on youtube, use this forum. You get the idea.
3. Once you can consistently CORRECTLY answer each question UNDER TWO MINUTES, and most importantly CAN EXPLAIN WHY THE ANSWER IS CORRECT, you are good to go.
4. I also did math and verbal questions throughout the day. Five minutes here, five minutes there. It helps you be mentally agile at all times. Have a test in the AM? You've done this in the AM. Have a test in the PM? You've done it in the PM. You're ready for whatever.
5. And lastly, what I found most important--Do at least one to two hours a night. When you're dead tired. Why? Because ultimately what may cause that score to drop is fatigue--fatigue from anxiety the night before, fatigue from sheer nerves, fatigue from the annoying processes at the testing center, fatigue from staring at a screen so long. You need to build endurance.
You obviously have the brains, now kick some ass.
