Para 1: Tells us that Jackson's theory is different from two other traditional theories.
Para 2: Provides the example of a tribe to illustrate differences in Jackson's point of view/ theory and Whorf's point of view/ theory.
Primary Purpose: To contrast Jackson's theory with other traditional theories.

1. The author of the passage is primarily concerned with

(A) contrasting multiple theories in a discipline
- Correct.

(B) discussing a particular theory and its implications
- Close; However, A is a better expression of the Primary Purpose.

(C) presenting a new theory that supplants the previously dominant theory
- Whether Jackson's theory "SUPPLANTS" other theories is not indicated.

(D) examining the origins of an academic position.
- Origins are not examined.

(E) reconciling two historically opposed views
- To some extent, yes, but not the Primary Purpose. A is better.

Answer A.

2. According to the passage, which of the following statements best describes mould theories of language?
As per second last line of first paragraph, mould theories state that all thought is shaped by language.

(A) Some thoughts are shaped by language and some are not.
-No.

(B) There is no difference between thought and language.
Nothing of this sort is specified.

(C) Languages differ primarily in their restrictiveness.
- This is Jackson's point of view.

(D) Language influences all thought.
- Correct

(E) Thought influences all language.
- States the opposite.

Answer D.

3. The passage suggests that which of the following is more restrictive for a speaker?

(A) Directions that reflect personal orientation, as compared to those that rely only on cardinal keys
Opposite. personal orientation is less restrictive.

(B) Pronouns in which gender is embedded, in contrast to pronouns that are gender-neutral
- Correct.

(C) Pronouns that are gender-neutral, as opposed to pronouns for which gender is inherent
- Pronouns that are gender neutral are more open to interpretation, and hence, less restrictive.

(D) Mould theories compared to behaviorist theories
- No such inference can be drawn on the basis of the passage alone.

(E) Jakobson’s view in comparison to Whorf’s view
-  Incorrect.

Answer B.

4. With respect to the relationship of language to thought, the passage indicates that Jakobson believes that
Last line of first paragraph states: "Rather, Jakobson suggests, some thoughts are shaped by language and some are not."

(A) language shapes some thoughts
- Correct.

(B) most thoughts are shaped by language
-"Most" is an incorrect adjective to use.

(C) if thoughts are shaped by language, language must be shaped by thoughts

1. The author of the passage is primarily concerned with

answer is b) discussing a particular theory and its implications
(A) contrasting multiple theories in a discipline : multiple theories are not discussed in passage - just one theory is discussed with some examples and its implications are discussed , so ruled out
(B) discussing a particular theory and its implications : yes this is right on target only one theory is explained that some thoughts are influenced by language and some are not and its implications are discussed
(C) presenting a new theory that supplants the previously dominant theory : no previously dominant theory is being replaced , so ruled out
(D) examining the origins of an academic position : origins are not being discussed anywhere in passage ,so out
(E) reconciling two historically opposed views : no opposing views are being reconciled in any way,so out

2. According to the passage, which of the following statements best describes mould theories of language?
answer is d) Language influences all thought.
(A) Some thoughts are shaped by language and some are not : this is what Jakobson says and not the mould theory
(B) There is no difference between thought and language - difference between thought and language is not what mould theory says - it says that language influences all thought , so ruled out
(C) Languages differ primarily in their restrictiveness : this is not what the theory says , this is some recycled langauge picked from second para to confuse , so its out
(D) Language influences all thought : yes this is the answer , first para says that pure “mould theories” advanced by Whorf, which argue that all thought is shaped by language
(E) Thought influences all language. : this is reversal of fact in the passage , its language that influences all thoughts

3. The passage suggests that which of the following is more restrictive for a speaker?

answer is b)Pronouns in which gender is embedded, in contrast to pronouns that are gender-neutral

(A) Directions that reflect personal orientation, as compared to those that rely only on cardinal keys: actually this is reversal of facts , actually directions that rely on cardinal keys are more restrictive , so its the opposite , hence ruled out
(B) Pronouns in which gender is embedded, in contrast to pronouns that are gender-neutral: this is right in last para states that a language in which common terms denote gender (“him”) imposes information on listeners, whereas one in which gender is irrelevant (“they”) leaves more open to interpretation, so we can infer this from this line
(C) Pronouns that are gender-neutral, as opposed to pronouns for which gender is inherent :this is reversal of facts pronouns that are gender neutral are infact not more restrictive than pronouns where gender is inherent
(D) Mould theories compared to behaviorist theories :restrictiveness comparison for the 2 theories for a speaker is not mentioned in passage
(E) Jakobson’s view in comparison to Whorf’s view : the restrictiveness is asked with regard to speaker but this is comparison with regard to view's , so ruled out

4. With respect to the relationship of language to thought, the passage indicates that Jakobson believes that

answer is A)language shapes some thoughts
(A) language shapes some thoughts- First para last line states that Jakobson suggests, some thoughts are shaped by language and some are not, so this is the answer

(B) most thoughts are shaped by language : most is the word that is wrongly used here , so ruled out
(C) if thoughts are shaped by language, language must be shaped by thoughts : this kind of sufficient condition with regards to if thoughts are shaped by language is not mentioned in the passage ,so out
(D) the two are not interrelated : Jackson never says that 2 are not interrelated , so out - this is extreme language
(E) linguistic patterns codify all thought :this is what whorf's theory says not what Jakobson says

Short note on the passage :

P1 - Jakobson: Some thoughts are shaped by language and some are not. Determined by the speaker's obligation to think.
Differ from behavioral stance and Whorf's mould theory.
P2 - Example - Guugu speakers sense of cardinal direction. Jakobson : it's a language constrain.

1. The author of the passage is primarily concerned with

(A) contrasting multiple theories in a discipline
Though the introduced view rejected and departed from some theories, the author is not intended in just contrasting multiple theories.
(B) discussing a particular theory and its implications
Correct. The author goes on to understand the details of the introduced view.
(C) presenting a new theory that supplants the previously dominant theory
The new view does not replace or outdate the previous theory .
(D) examining the origins of an academic position
There is not tracing of the academic position.
(E) reconciling two historically opposed views
The author does not add any of his own opinion , so there is no reconciling effort.

(A) Some thoughts are shaped by language and some are not.
This is the view presented by Jakobson and not by mould theories.

(E) Thought influences all language.
Incorrect. The theory says just the opposite.

D

(A) Directions that reflect personal orientation, as compared to those that rely only on cardinal keys

Correct. Supported by the information "a language in which common terms denote gender (“him”) imposes information on listeners, whereas one in which gender is irrelevant (“they”) leaves more open to interpretation"
(C) Pronouns that are gender-neutral, as opposed to pronouns for which gender is inherent
Gender- neutral pronouns are not considered restrictive.
(D) Mould theories compared to behaviorist theories
No such comparison can be inferred.
(E) Jakobson’s view in comparison to Whorf’s view
As suggested by Jakobson, some views may not have freedom to think. This just rejected the Whorf's view.

B

(A) language shapes some thoughts
Correct . The passage says" Jakobson suggests, some thoughts are shaped by language and some are not."

Para-1 - How language and thoughts are interrelated- Jacobson view vs Whorf view
Para-2 - Examples of different people conveying the same thought differently - How will Jacobson and Whorf take them differently - Jacobson belief for new discoveries.

Passage - Contrasting two views/theories with examples.

1. The author of the passage is primarily concerned with

(A) contrasting multiple theories in a discipline.....Even tough there are only two theories mentioned we can consider it. Lets Keep It.
(B) discussing a particular theory and its implications.....Forst there are two theories, second the implications of none of the theories are mentioned. The only thing mentioned is that how new discoveries can be made in regard to how we think. Eliminate
(C) presenting a new theory that supplants the previously dominant theory.....No theory is proved dominant, and no new theory is presented. Eliminated.
(D) examining the origins of an academic position.....Origins, OFS. Eliminate.
(E) reconciling two historically opposed views.....Yes the passage is reconciling, but we can see that the passage is written in present tense (and some part in future, discoveries), also there is no timeline mentioned in the passage. So we cannot conclude that the views were/are historical. Eliminate.

2. According to the passage, which of the following statements best describes mould theories of language?

Mould theory was made by whorf, who believed that all thoughts are shaped by language.

(A) Some thoughts are shaped by language and some are not......This is Jacobson Belief. Eliminate.
(B) There is no difference between thought and language......To strong. There many be difference between thoughts and language, but those differences are influenced by language. Eliminate.
(C) Languages differ primarily in their restrictiveness......OFS. ELiminate.
(D) Language influences all thought......Yes as per our reasoning, this is correct. Keep it.
(E) Thought influences all language......Opposite reasoning. Eliminate

3. The passage suggests that which of the following is more restrictive for a speaker?

(A) Directions that reflect personal orientation, as compared to those that rely only on cardinal keys.....It is a part of an example, which was used to show a stand point of Jacobson & Whorf. Eliminate.
(B) Pronouns in which gender is embedded, in contrast to pronouns that are gender-neutral.....It is mentioned as a viewpoint of listeners (whose preferences are unknown) and not the speakers. Eliminate.
(C) Pronouns that are gender-neutral, as opposed to pronouns for which gender is inherent.....It is mentioned as a viewpoint of listeners (whose preferences are unknown) and not the speakers. Eliminate.
(D) Mould theories compared to behaviorist theories.....Mould theory is more restrictive as the speakers thought will then depend solely on the language (example of The Aboriginal tongue Guugu Yimithirr), where as in behaviorist view the thoughts will depend on language + other factors (example of native English speakers). Keep It.
(E) Jakobson’s view in comparison to Whorf’s view.....It is opposite of the reasoning given for option D. Eliminate

4. With respect to the relationship of language to thought, the passage indicates that Jakobson believes that

Jacobson believed that - some thoughts are shaped by language and some are not.

(A) language shapes some thoughts.....As per our above reasoning this is correct. Keep it.
(B) most thoughts are shaped by language.....Most is a wrong word and cannot be inferred. We do not know whether the thoughts which are influenced by language are more than 50%. Eliminate.
(C) if thoughts are shaped by language, language must be shaped by thoughts.....Circular reasoning. Eliminate.
(D) the two are not interrelated.....He believed that they are related to some extent. Eliminate.
(E) linguistic patterns codify all thought.....ALL - no, SOME - yes. Eliminate.

1. The author of the passage is primarily concerned with

(A) contrasting multiple theories in a discipline
There are just 2 theories, of Jakobson, of whorf, so multiple theories is not valid here.

1. The author of the passage is primarily concerned with

The main idea is a focus on Jakobson's idea that does not match with other theories. And we see an example that regarded according to some theories...
(A) contrasting multiple theories in a discipline
This one looks good. But it's just the part of the end of the first paragraph. Need something broader I guess
(B) discussing a particular theory and its implications
The main idea is one theory. But if this example is called an implicatio? I keep this is if I can not find better...
(C) presenting a new theory that supplants the previously dominant theory
I think there is not a new theory
(D) examining the origins of an academic position
Not at all.
(E) reconciling two historically opposed views
There is no reconciliation here.

By default... 1-->B

2. According to the passage, which of the following statements best describes mould theories of language?
The MT, which argues that all thought is shaped by language... Let's find something close to this.

(A) Some thoughts are shaped by language and some are not.
Not far
(B) There is no difference between thought and language.
Nope
(C) Languages differ primarily in their restrictiveness.
This is not the meaning here.
(D) Language influences all thought.
Yep. Influences all. Because all thought is shaped by language.
(E) Thought influences all language.
The contrary

2-->D

3. The passage suggests that which of the following is more restrictive for a speaker?
In P2 we have the answer.

(A) Directions that reflect personal orientation, as compared to those that rely only on cardinal keys
No this is the contrary.
(B) Pronouns in which gender is embedded, in contrast to pronouns that are gender-neutral
Yes! As written at the end of the second paragraph. This nonneutral gender gives less freedom.
(C) Pronouns that are gender-neutral, as opposed to pronouns for which gender is inherent
The contrary
(D) Mould theories compared to behaviorist theories
I think the question of restrictiveness is not the main question for the behaviorist.
(E) Jakobson’s view in comparison to Whorf’s view
Jakobson is more balanced.

3-->B

4. With respect to the relationship of language to thought, the passage indicates that Jakobson believes that
Jakobson suggests, some thoughts are shaped by language and some are not. There is the idea to pick here. A balance idea.

(A) language shapes some thoughts
Yes. Some. But not all. Seems good.
(B) most thoughts are shaped by language
No, there is no ponderation.
(C) if thoughts are shaped by language, language must be shaped by thoughts
Not balanced
(D) the two are not interrelated
Not at all.
(E) linguistic patterns codify all thought
Sometimes...

4-->A

First question is bit harder but question 2 and 4 are very easy, Great work done by Tahamohsin, bidskamikaze, Deepakjhamb, Sumi1010 and BIDJI23. Official explanation will be posted after exactly 10-15 minutes. Read the OE and reconcile your explanation with that.
