Hello All,
I started my GMAT preparation last month and after a basic understanding of the questions and a little bit of practice for around 2-3 weeks, i gave the free GMAT test on mba.com . I got a score of 580 (Q 49, V 20), where i could only answer 50% of the verbal questions correctly. While practicing verbal questions on the GMAT club as well as after analyzing the incorrect questions on the mock i found 2 observations:
1. For most of the incorrect question of CR and RC, when i try to look at explanations they all seem logical but somehow i am not able to inculcate that logic when i am attempting the question at first hand.
2. For other incorrect question, I am unable to understand the question itself.
Could someone help me in specifically tacking the first problem(its really frustrating that why i am not able to think) as for the second one I know that i am not used to reading complex articles and paragraphs and i am trying to work on that.
Also is it possible that with such a bad verbal score at first mock, i can improve it over the period of next 2-3 months ? I am planning to give GMAT in October and my target score is 740.
Hi Rajat,
First of all, Q49 is a good score with the amount of preparation you did. The verbal part seems to be a concern. Let me share a few insights on how to improve your verbal score.
Verbal questions on GMAT are very tricky. For example,
• In SC, you have to read the sentence from the meaning standpoint and then start looking at the grammatical errors.
• In CR, you have to understand the argument, identify the premise and the conclusion and then pre-think the answer before looking at the solutions.
• In RC, you need to have the right reading strategies to understand the inferences which are not directly stated in the passage.
The reason you are struggling in CR might be because you are not able to understand the different parts of the argument. CR questions have a specific framework and understanding them will help you pre-think the answer with better precision.
And in the case of RC, reading strategies play a very important role. And also you have to learn the art of eliminating close answer choices because test makers often use similar words to confuse students.
An improvement is definitely possible but that would require you to follow a standardized material. If you are open to studying using an online course, I would recommend you to check
